RE: [dcphp-dev] Introductions

Hi Folks,

My name is Brent Lightner.  I run a boutique PHP/Drupal shop located on Capitol Hill in DC.  I used to code, but honestly, I’m far too rusty and removed from day-to-day development to call myself a programmer anymore.  (I still know just enough to think I know what I’m talking about, when in fact I don’t.  ie, just enough to annoy people that actually know what they’re doing ;-).   As a team, we’ve built some impressive PHP apps, our most famous being a system that matches people who need kidneys with people willing to donate theirs.  Our software is directly responsible for over 500 transplants to-date, is fully HIPAA compliant, makes use of some killer AJAX and JQuery for real-time scenario rendering, and all sort of other neat stuff that makes this build the most complicated and meaningful that we’ve ever done.  These days we’re more about Drupal, but most of our developers come from a PHP background, so we’re always building custom modules and extending what Drupal can do out of the box.

If you hang out in IRC rooms, you’ll recognize my frequent and unabashed plea for new talent.  We are always actively seeking experienced Drupal/PHP developers.  We pay well above the curve.  We work on varied and interesting projects (mainly in the non profit world).  We are a totally casual shop (a shorts and flipflops kind of place).  And there are lots of perks (like Friday happy hours starting at 3 with a staff meeting on our company boat shortly thereafter.  (If you’re in the DC area and want to join us for a Friday cruise, we enjoy tag-alongs.)  So if you’re interested in any of the above, ping me.

We’re in the process of moving our office to a bigger building.  Once we do, we’ll try to host some of the meetups so that we meet more of you!

It's been a good long while since everybody on the list has introduced themselves and said what they do. This will help us know who's on the list and give new people an idea of the range of talent they have to draw on by asking questions of the list.

I'll kick it off:

I'm Sandy Smith, and I organize DCPHP along with Barry Austin (DC Beverage Subgroup) and Brock Boland (He Who Keeps This List Free of Recruiter Spam).

I've been working with PHP since '99. I'm a child of the 80's and grew up on BASIC (C-64) and then tried my hand at other professions before settling on tech. Most of my career has been spent consulting (mostly building/configuring CMSes, both custom and Drupal) for DC-area clients, especially nonprofits, but recently I've been more in the startup world. I was a cofounder of mojoLive.com and have a new company that does both consulting and products called Muskteers.me. We just started a Kickstarter for two new products if you want to check it out: http://kck.st/QjQZho
