Return to In-Person Gatherings

Like many of you, we're eager to return to our pre-COVID norms of gathering in-person - unmasked, with greetings of hugs or hand-shakes. We're also eager to continue serving those who have been able to join us virtually over the past year and a half. We're so grateful for your support and understanding as we flex with changing circumstances, and adhere strictly to the guidance that makes sense for our area.

As of now, all IMCW offerings are able to meet in-person as of August 28. Many teachers are exploring a hybrid form of meeting -- either alternating between in-person and virtual, or in-person with Zoom streaming. Please know that some of the venues that hosted our drop-in groups prior to COVID have either closed or can no longer accommodate us. Please contact your teacher to confirm, and let us know if you have any questions.

For events that are are able to meet in-person, the following guidelines apply:

Drop-in Groups: We request that all in attendance are fully vaccinated, and because of the Delta variant, that participants continue to wear masks...

Coming together as a community to share the dhamma and delight in the radiance of our hearts has been a foundational part of the Buddhist teachings since the beginning. With that in mind, I would like to invite everyone to attend the IMCW all-sangha picnic on August 30th from 10:30 - 2:00 in Rock Creek Park at Picnic Grove #24. I am planning to attend and am grateful and delighted at the opportunity to spend time together.

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Class this Sunday: The Edge of Knowing

Dear friends,

As the dharma moves into our lives and shapes our minds, we may find ourselves more often at the edge of knowing. When we are exposed to the teachings and to practice, our minds learn to disregard the impulse to say or do something. We become skeptical of our agendas. We learn to sit with the question: what is really going on right now? And we learn to listen closely for an answer.

We will take time this Sunday evening to open our minds to the guidance of the dharma and bring ourselves closer to the edge of knowing. Though fear may arise at times, the love we bring for each other carries us through (like this).

We will meet from 7:00 - 8:30 PM online. Here's the link: https://zoom.us/j/466237117?pwd=cGxHaTJlTVhBdldVSk8weDZuSW5udz09

With love,

Devin

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Reading Group - Saturday July 24 - Emptiness: A Practical Guide for Meditators

Hello!

Just a friendly reminder that this coming Saturday, July 24 we will meet for the Downtown Dharma reading group to continue our discussion of the book Emptiness: A Practical Guide for Meditators by Guy Armstrong.

Meeting Information:
We will be doing a combined in-person/Zoom meeting this time. We ask that participants only come in person if they have been fully vaccinated.

July 24, 6:00-7:30 pm

Address: Harris Rosensweig's place 1372 Randolph St. NW, #103
Washington, DC 20011

Optional group dinner afterwards—we went to dinner after our first in person meeting and thought we could do a repeat with a casual dinner somewhere afterwards.

Reading:

We'll be reading Chapters 7 through 13 this time (pages 83-171).  If you don't get to read all of it, that's ok!

Below are some of the major topics we discussed during our first discussion.

·    Emptiness- what is it?

·    Self- What does "no self" (or not self) mean? What are common beliefs about the self that we hold? What does Armstrong claim is wrong about those beliefs?

·    Sense bases and the five aggregates

·    What is "self" really? How do we create a view of the self through thinking and attachment?

·    What is the "conventional" versus "fundamental" view of the self?

Chapters 7 through 13 cover:

  • Beyond Self
  • Bearing Emptiness
  • Karma: Patterns of Becoming
  • Who is Reborn?
  • The End of Karma
  • Abiding in Emptiness
  • Cessation and Nibbana

We plan on having an opening question to be sent out in a future email to get the discussion going and then have free form conversation after the opening responses.

If you can make it, kindly email me at hrosensweig@hotmail.com to RSVP.

See below for the Zoom information via Brandel!  Thank you Brandel!

Brandel France de Bravo is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Social Engagement as Practice - Part 2 of the Dharma of Feedback

Greetings Dear Community,

Even if we aren't directly impacted, bearing witness to floods and fires around the world is hard, especially when we know that humanity is far from united on the causes and required remedies. Not limited to the question of catastrophic ecological crises, as a culture, our realities are becoming increasingly segregated. If you feel discouraged, depressed, overwhelmed or even helpless in the face of the conflicts that underlie these phenomena, you're not alone.

How might the Dharma support us in understanding, managing and responding to this immense challenge? What agency is possible for us here that is both grounded and inspiring. Again: we begin with our own minds. In this second of two explorations on conflict, we'll look at that wisdom and practices that can support us as we enter into situations where social conflict might be skillfully addressed.

As usual, we'll begin with a period of sitting together, and after the dharma talk, share in community conversation. Zoom details follow below. I look forward to being with you.

Thank you for your practice,
Kristin
