WHY WE WALK

  1. Access to healthy food should not be a luxury. Yet 1 in 7 District households struggle with food insecurity. And East of the River, limited options for buying fresh affordable food restricts people's ability to make healthy choices for their families. There are only 3 full service grocery stores for over 148,000 people in Wards 7 and 8 combined, making it difficult for many residents-- especially the 47% who have no access to a personal vehicle and the 17% who have a disability-- to get to fresh healthy food. This is the result of policies and practices that have chronically underinvested in communities of color and our food system.
  2. Your zipcode should not determine your life expectancy. Yet on average, Ward 2 residents live 16 years longer than Ward 8 residents. And East of the River, people are dramatically more likely to have and die from chronic diet-related disease-- Ward 8 residents are 5 times more likely to die from diabetes than Ward 3 residents. Access to healthy food is a public health equity issue.
  3. Local governments are responsible for solving public health problems. It is the D.C. government's responsibility to solve public health problems and work toward an equitable city. We need the city and its elected officials to maintain solutions that are working and fix the ones that aren't.
  4. D.C. can address these issues by investing in access to healthy food for all. The people of D.C. need our City Council and our mayor to put the city's money where its mouths are in 2018:
  • Amend the FEED DC Act to better support the development of small and medium sized grocers and grocery cooperatives in Wards 7 and 8
  • Create a recurring fund in the city budget to fund food justice solutions
  • Reduce barriers to federal nutrition programs like SNAP and WIC
  • Maintain funding for local programs that increase access to fresh food-- like Produce Plus, Healthy Corners, Joyful Markets, Medically Tailored meals, Produce Prescription, and nutrition programs for homeless shelters

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] [Dupont Sangha] This Sunday: Creating a Beautiful Past

Dear Sangha,

This Sunday evening, I will be facilitating sangha. I hope you will be able to join us. After a guided meditation, I will offer some reflections on the below topic and description.

Creating a Beautiful Past: Dwelling In the Present we Heal the Past and Take Good Care of the Future

Drawing on her 15 years living as a nun with Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh and the monastic community, as well as the transition back to lay life 2 years ago, Kaira Jewel will explore how living deeply in the present allows us to heal wounds from our past, not only in ourselves but also in our ancestors. And how the best way to prepare well for the future is to take good care of this moment, right here and now.

Day of Mindfulness for Educators

October 28, 2017, 9:30 AM - 4:30 PM

at Seekers Church, (276 Carroll Street, NW, Washington, DC, 20012)

In this daylong for educators we will learn and practice tools for taking good care of ourselves, so that we can be truly present for those we teach, and bring the best of ourselves into the classroom. We will slow down and come home to our body and breath by practicing mindful sitting, walking and eating silently together, as well as deep relaxation, a mindfulness talk, and group discussion. We will possibly use the tools of InterPlay—improvisational movement and storytelling—to access the wisdom of the body, and touch our inherent grace and ease.

Whether you are a teacher, school counselor, administrator, or simply have an interest in mindfulness in education—all are welcome.

Here for more info and to register.

The work of social justice activists and community organizers is challenging and often leads to burnout. Through diverse means, we struggle to right the wrongs of unjust systems, and often forget to take care of ourselves.
The path of mindfulness helps us cultivate clarity, understanding and compassion. We bring integrity, calm and peace as we strive for balance inside and outside of ourselves.

Hi all,
For those going to the movie Thursday, a few people wanted to get together beforehand. We're going to do bring your own dinner or coffee and hang out on the steps of the portrait gallery at 6:30. Specifically, the stairs on the 7th street side. Then we will walk over to the movie together at 7.

So if you want to sit with this group at the theater, be at the portrait gallery steps by 7.

If it's raining we will meet up inside the portrait gallery courtyard.

Since there are a flock of us going, I'm going to keep it simple. Please do not let me or the listsev know if you are joining us at the Portrait Gallery, please just come if you can make it. Given the fantastic response, I can't coordinate with people who can't meet at the steps by 7.

Thanks everyone and have a great week.

Erin
