The money is not the issue for me, it's the on-site. I wouldn't mind coming in occasionally for meetings, etc, but my commute now is 10 feet to my office. Unless you want to provide equivalent equipment to my rig and pay for the commute time, I couldn't see going from remote work to *shudder* an office job.

Brandon brings up a good point -- you won't find anyone for those rates... certainly not in the D.C. area.

Is it mandatory they be on-site? FreeLancer.com or oDesk.com might be a better approach if they can work remotely.

It's also a little impossible to think that a candidate would be willing to work for $30 an hour. Taking into account an average benefits package of $10,000 and adding in payroll taxes, you're looking at an annualized salary of $48k and change. That's not nearly an acceptable salary for a developer in DC.

[dcphp-dev] Easy development VMs for WordPress with Vagrant & Ansible

Hey gang --

Thought I'd share this thing I built that may be of interest to the
WordPress developers out there: a toolset for easily creating
lightweight development virtual machines, with WordPress and all its
dependencies already installed, configured and ready to go:

It's built on Vagrant and Ansible, so once you've got those installed
setting up a clean new WordPress VM is just a matter of cloning the repo
into an empty directory and then running "vagrant up" at your command
prompt. Then just hit the IP address of the VM in your browser and boom,
WordPress. (You can add an entry in your /etc/hosts to map a local
domain name to the IP, too.)

There's going to be an article in an future issue of php[architect]
(maybe the next one?) going into how to use it in more detail, but if
you're on this list I'm guessing you can probably figure it out with
just the README :-D

Anyway, it's saved me a bunch of time getting started in projects
involving WordPress theme & plugin development, so I figured I'd share
it on the chance it might help someone else too. Questions, comments,
forks, pull requests, etc. are of course welcome.

I thought this is an interesting quote:

I'm hosting the next Buddha Brunch on September 27 from noon to
3:00ish. The general topic is Engaged Buddhism. It's a topic which
we've discussed before. Given everything that seems to be going on in
the world, it seems like it's always a relevant topic.

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Hosting next Buddha Brunch

Hi All,

I'd like to host a Buddha Brunch for Saturday, September 27th, from
Noon to 2:30 or so.

I don't have a reading list, but I'd like to continue a thread from
previous Buddha Brunch's regarding engaged Buddhism. A couple of
brunches ago we decided to do some volunteering at St. Stephen's
Loaves and Fishes. It was a great opportunity to help Loaves and
Fishes serve hungry people in our community.

I would like to see if members of the Downtown Dharma Sangha are
interested in a sustained effort to engage on social issues in the
community, the nation, and the world. I'm not sure exactly what it
would look like. There are so many important causes to get engaged in,
and many of us are already stretched thin or engaged in some effort
already. Partly, I'm looking for ways that I can personally contribute
to a more just society from a Buddhist perspective. I am also hoping
that others who feel the same way would be interested in finding ways,
perhaps small, to contribute to a variety of issues, perhaps on a
rotating basis.

If I can find some appropriate readings, I will send them around.
Suggestions are also welcome.
