August 2018
Welcome to our August edition of Mission Insider. On this edition of our newsletter we are happy to report our accomplishments for Fiscal Year 2018. We feel extremely proud of the number of individuals and families we were able to serve this past fiscal year and how we were able to expand programs and services by opening a Food Pantry, a Day Center for individuals experiencing homelessness and an Education and Training Center in only one year.

Our numbers below show the hard work and commitment of our Board, staff, volunteers and partners and we can only be thankful for the hard work of all the individuals and organizations that have made our success possible.
Our Numbers
Community Health Fair and
Back-to-School Supplies
On August 25, 2018 Mission of Love Charities partnered with Doctor's Community Hospital and Family and Medical Counseling Service, Inc. and offered free screenings as well as Back-to-School supplies to needed children in our community. The organization distributed 291 backpacks filled with supplies and provided screenings to 20 individuals.

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] This Sunday at Potter's House: Bring. It. On.

Dear Friends,

Warm greetings to all of you.

This Sunday from 6 to 7:30 pm we will gather at Potter's House. Beginning with a 20 - 30 minute meditation session, we'll then explore how the more challenging aspects of Dharma practice can deeply support us in the development of unshakable confidence and even fearlessness.

We gather in the community room (right of the register, last door on the left). The space has chairs available. Bring your favorite bench or cushion if you'd like. If you'd like to help set-up, please arrive ten minutes early. The space is wheelchair accessible.

I hope you can join us!

With appreciation,
Kristin

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Sunday Sangha at Potter's House

"Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and to try to love the questions themselves like locked rooms and like books that are written in a very foreign tongue." --Rilke

Dear Sangha,

We will meet this Sunday, August 19, from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm in the Community Room at the Potter's House (1658 Columbia Rd NW) to meditate and explore the practice of RAIN, a tool for working with difficult emotions.

RAIN stands for Recognizing the emotion, Accepting its presence, Inquiring into it with kindness and curiosity, and Not letting it determine who we are or what we do. This practice has helped me immeasurably with the challenges in my life. I'm delighted and honored to share it with you.

Chairs are available. You're also welcome to bring a cushion. If you'd like to help set-up, please arrive five to ten minutes early. The space is wheelchair accessible.

Peace,
Ryland

Hi all,

There is a currently a room opening in the Lamont Dharma House.

Living in a community like the Lamont Dharma House is a unique opportunity to bring your meditation and/or yoga practice to the center of your life, and to explore how community can support your practice in powerful ways.

The room is a beautiful large room on the second floor and will be available for $1130/mo. plus utilities. We are looking for someone who is ready to move in as soon as possible.

Re: [Downtown Dharma Listserve] Question about march next weekend

I will be at a Reiki training on Sunday & will invite the gathering to send Reiki to all demonstrators & beings in the DMV & USA.

I invite meditation practitioners & healers to dedicate our practices today & every day (especially this weekend) to healing the trauma of the birth of this most prosperous & powerful nation, built upon the genocide of Native Americans, the enslavement of Africans in America, and the persistent abuse of People of Color due to systemic racism.

We are one human family. Sending Light, Love & Peace!

Thanks to both of you for your thoughtful replies and for the information.  I"m afraid I"m not willing to risk my safety for this one, though I certainly respect your right (or anyone else's) to do so.  I know this is different, but the day after the inauguration, I was part of a Buddhist group marching in silence, and it was very powerful.

metta to all,
Joan

Hi Joan,

I went to a community meeting last night about this (which is why I missed meditation at Potter's House!). There will be a rally at Freedom Plaza 12 - 3 pm on August 12, which is legally permitted, explicitly non-violent, joy-based, and centers the work of POC and other marginalized organizers. I will be there and would be happy to meet up with folks - it will be as safe as possible, but always good to be in a group.

If you would like to serve as a de-escalator at this event to help ensure its peace, they are still in need of volunteers. Not exactly sure how to get in touch with them, but you might try commenting on the Facebook event.

Other opportunities include a Aug 10 Free School and donating -- the event is still in need of some basic and vital support like covering costs of portable toilets for the crowds, water bottles, materials to create a large art installation, etc. Please give generously if you can.

I understand where you're coming from on seeking peaceful protest opportunities - but I think this is a good topic to wrestle with and consider deeply. St. Paul's Principles call us to respect a diversity of tactics and to affirm the unity of the movement for justice. Groups will be in the streets that weekend with more disruptive and defensive approaches - and there is a long lineage (particularly of marginalized organizers) using such direct action to bring about substantial change. I am meditating on the thought this week that we must risk something real, including our safety, especially as folks of privilege, for our shared liberation. Happy to talk more.

Grateful for you,
Rachel

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Women's Year of Mindfulness and Focusing (September 2018 - June 2019) with Marie Sheppard

YOMF.jpg

Hello everyone!

I attended this wonderful Year of Mindfulness and Focusing program last year (previously called Heart of Mindfulness) taught by Marie Sheppard and one of IMCW's fantastic teachers, Kaira Jewel Lingo. I wanted to share the program with any women from the Downtown Dharma group who might be interested in the new program starting in September!

There will be a free info session Sunday, August 26th from 3:30pm-4:30pm at Circle Yoga.

You can register for the session or program at: https://circleyoga.com/mindfulness_event/year-of-mindfulness-and-focusing/

Scholarships available!

-------------------------------------------------------------

A Year of Mindfulness and Focusing is a nine-month program (September 2018 - June 2019) designed to help you develop two awareness practices—mindfulness and Inner Relationship Focusing—within a small, supportive community of women. Through this program, you will learn ways to free yourself from distractions, habits and conditioning that prevent you from living your life fully. You will also learn how to be gentle with challenging emotions, develop a strong self-care practice and find more ease and joy in your relationship with yourself and others.

Whether you are new to mindfulness and Focusing or have years of practice, you will build solid skills to integrate into your daily life.

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] "Behold! The Underminer!" - This Sunday Evening at Potter's House

Dear Friends,

Warm greetings to all of you.

This Sunday at 6pm we will gather at Potter's House to practice together and then continue in our study of the 5 Hindrances with a deeper dive into the uber-hindrance of undermining doubt.

We'll explore how to work with this particularly confusing hindrance and how we might doubt the doubter and undermine the underminer.

"Behold, the Underminer! I'm always beneath you, but nothing is beneath me! I hereby declare war on peace and happiness! Soon, all will tremble before me!
(from the last scene in the 2004 Pixar animated film, The Incredibles)

We gather in the community room to the right of the register. The space has chairs available. Bring your favorite bench or cushion if you'd like. If you'd like to help set-up, please arrive ten minutes early. The space is wheelchair accessible.

I hope you can join us!

With appreciation,
Kristin
