[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Dharma Reading Group: Saturday, May 2, 5pm

Hi everyone,

Every other Saturday at 5pm, a varied collection of folks from the sangha gather on Zoom for friendly discussion of readings/talks that relate to the dharma.

Our next group meeting is this coming Saturday, May 2, at 5pm. If you've been looking to delve deeper into aspects of Buddhist spirituality, are seeking deeper connections with folks from our beautiful sangha, or are simply bored after weeks of sheltering in place, you're warmly invited to join us!

Here's a link to our readings (including an audio dharma talk) for this discussion. It also includes the Zoom link for the meeting itself.

Warmly,
Vince

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] This Sunday Online

Hi friends,

We will meet online this Sunday from 6:00 - 7:30 to meditate and explore the dharma together. The topic this week will be the third and fourth foundations of mindfulness: the mind and mental processes. These are vast topics so I will share a simplified framework for watching and working with the mind that I have found very helpful.

Please join us using the information below.

With love,

Devin

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Sunday's Virtual Sangha Meeting: Back to Basics

Dear friends,

In the past few weeks, I have found myself getting "back to basics". No, I don't mean making my own sourdough starter, more like practicing with the Four Foundations of Mindfulness; 1. Body or kaya, 2. Feeling or vedana, 3. Mind or chitta, and 4. Physical and mental processes or dhammas. This Sunday, we will explore the first two foundations and how they can help support us during this time of great human distress. And next week, Devin will lead us through the last two foundations.

I look forward to being with you tomorrow/Sunday, 6 to 7:30 pm ET:

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Virtual qigong class tonight

All,
I hope it's OK to send this to the group. I assume someone will tell me if it's not.

I have been going for a while to a Qigong class at the Smith Center for Healing and the Arts. The center was set up for cancer patients, but the classes are open to anyone. Now, of course, they're online. It's a monthly hourlong class, The center asks for a $10 donation. To avoid security problems with Zoom, the woman at the Center said I could send the registration link to the group, and if you're interested, she can send the Zoom link to you individually.

In case you're  unfamiliar with  it, Qigong, related to T'ai Chi, is a way of tapping into your energy with minimal physical movement. I really like this teacher, Kevin.

Update from Mission of Love Charities

Mission of Love Charities Update
We're Still Here and Serving our Clients. But with scaled back operations.
Faced with the expanding COVID-19 pandemic, and with the corresponding government orders and mandated protocols directing us all to observe social distancing, the primary concerns these days for Mission of Love Charities is the safety and health of the people we serve and our staff and volunteers.

Consequently, we have taken steps to limit the physical interaction that usually occurs during our daily operations.

Accordingly, Mission of Love Charities continues to provide food to qualified low-income and homeless individuals, families and children who come to our facility, and we continue to accept donations of food to stock our pantry.

However, we do not allow our clients to enter the building.  We interact with them at a safe distance outside our front door.

Additionally, we can help people apply for food stamps or SNAP, but we take those applications over the phone or in person immediately outside our facility.

If anyone who comes to us is in need of health care, we refer them to an appropriate health care provider.

Traditionally, we helped people faced with crisis caused by being unable to pay the rent or their utilities.  Because there is currently a moratorium on rental evictions and any cut-offs of utilities because of an inability to pay, these services are not necessary for the immediate future.

Because we are not allowing clients to enter our facility, unfortunately we are unable to provide access to laundry machines, showers or the day center.  And there is no shopping for clothing, furniture and other household items that we usually offer.

Finally, we join in asking everyone to follow these basic rules:
  • Stay home.  Do not go out and about.
  • Keep a safe distance.
  • Wash hands often.
  • Cover your cough.
  • Sick? Call ahead before you go to the Emergency Room.

Mission of Love Charities persists in its mission to serve the neediest people of our community.  But we are doing so while following all recommended safety protocols during this unprecedented pandemic.  We ask for your support and accommodation.
Sincerely,

Deborah Martinez

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] This Sunday's Online Sangha: A Potluck of Joys and Sorrows

Greetings Dear Sangha,

I hope this message finds your body healthy, your mind relaxed, and your heart enveloped in kindness.

Our zoom meeting will take place this Sunday at 6:00 pm. But here's the thing: We had scheduled our quarterly potluck. Undaunted, we're inviting you to go ahead and gather your laptop, your dinner, your cushion and join our party. As this is the potluck evening, our emphasis will be on connecting. So we'll practice together, and then I'll offer just a few thoughts on cultivating equanimity and we'll explore this topic and more in smaller breakout rooms. We really hope you'll join us as coming together this way can help this already strong and wise community arise from this period even stronger, even wiser.

Consistent with the last few weeks, we'll be meeting on Zoom, a free program you can access from a computer or phone. As part of taking care of the Sangha, we have a few requests:
  • Please make sure your computer or device is ready in advance by ensuring that you have the latest version of zoom, and that your mic and camera are working.
  • Please be on time and plan to be "in the room," that is, be ready to devote your full attention to our gathering, ideally until the end of the meeting.
