[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] next book club Saturday December 2: downsides of sense pleasures

Hey folks,

I'll be hosting the next Downtown Dharma book club at my apartment in Dupont Circle on Saturday December 2 at 4pm! Please RSVP here if you'd like to attend, either in person or on Zoom.

The topic I chose for this meeting is the downsides of sense pleasures. I remember several years ago when a teacher brought up this phrase during a dhamma talk, and I was confused: what was meant by a "sense pleasure"? Does this mean there is a "downside" to every pleasant sensation?

I have a collection of related short articles and a YouTube video here. Feel free to read/watch whatever you want, and hopefully we can have a lively discussion!
  • Are Sense Pleasures Suffering?
    • Short blog post I found by Insight Meditation South Bay.
  • Majjhima Nikaya 26: The Five Strands of Sense Pleasure
    • Excerpt from a sutta where the Buddha appears to define sense pleasure. If you've never read a sutta before, you'll find there is quite a lot of repetition, but don't be intimidated - we can dive into trying to understand what this all means during our discussion.
  • Eight Worldly Winds - Kaira Jewel Lingo
    • Scanned chapter attached below of Kaira Jewel Lingo's book "We Were Made for These Times" giving an overview of a concept closely related to sense pleasure: the Eight Worldly Winds. Thanks to Ava for providing!
  • Eight Worldly Winds with Venerable Thubten Samten
    • Short YouTube video of a Tibetan Buddhist nun telling some humorous personal anecdotes about her experience with the Eight Worldly Winds. (Topic starts at 0:58)

The address is 2122 Massachusetts Ave NW, Apt 712. You can wave at the security guard to let you in, then come up to the 7th floor; but feel free to call me if you have any issues, 520-612-1103.

See you soon!

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Sit-n-Dine Tomorrow!

On this chilly autumn night

With leaves underfoot

The ears delight

The wind is moving

From north north west

What is that, Rockville?

Maps aren't my best

Anyway,

Let's leave that aside,

Because tomorrow is Sit-n-Dine!

A misnomer, really,

Better sit-n-snack

Peanut butter pretzels?

Y'all need more than that

Never mind,

Just bring a sweater

Right action requires layers ...

In this weather

TLDR: Tomorrow is Sit-N-Dine. That's when we sit, and then head to the temperance garden to mingle. See you there!

Best,

Josh

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Sunday night - Dharma of the acorn

Dear dharma friends,

Wishing you well this weekend. Looking forward to being together tomorrow night for meditation, teaching and community - 7-8:30pm at Yoga District (1910 14th St NW, 3rd Floor) and via Zoom.

The fall season is in full swing, and the leaves are showing their brilliant colors. Lately, I've been much more interested in something rolling under the leaves  - acorns! Okay, "interested" is an understatement. I'm obsessed! So much that I'm basically throwing an acorn festival. But this humble nut is more than just cute. They show us the wisdom of sitting still, interconnection, and how transformation is already inside us.

Looking forward to cracking this one open together. See you soon :)

Shawn

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] A space for healing and sharing about the Israel-Palestinian conflict

Hello all,

I hope that it's ok to share it with the community- my colleague and I will be offering a space for anyone who feels distraught by the recent conflict in the middle east.

I find myself feeling depressed and hopeless with all the hate and anger that's going around these days, and I personally need a space where I can connect with the common humanity of our shared suffering, whatever our opinions about the war may be. We'd love for you to join and share with anyone who might need it. We will meet next Thursday, November 16th, between 12-1pm EST. More details below.

Here is the link to register.

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

Kindly,

Maya Cohen (She, her, hers)

Re: [Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] An Evening with Downtown Dharma: Dharma of a Man: Liberation and Joy in the F.L.O.W. of Impermanence

Hi all,

One last minute update: Yoga District has changed their policy and now requires all classes to lock outside doors at the start of class. This is because of issues with theft that they've been experiencing. Therefore, please try to arrive before 7 pm today. We'll do our best to accommodate late comers today and in the next few weeks as we transition to this new policy.

We apologize as we know it's been our longstanding policy to offer a ten minute grace period after the start time for latecomers. We understand that it can be hard to arrive on time when relying on public transportation or navigating DC traffic and parking. We also are so grateful to our hosts at Yoga District and want to be respectful of their policies.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Kavya

This Sunday, we will delve deep into a Dharma-inspired practice that emphasizes compassionate listening and open sharing. I will share my personal insights on our collective path in this life, emphasizing the teachings of detachment and the wisdom that arises when we let life be our teacher, supporting our enlightenment in this society. We will revisit the F.L.O.W. concept, exploring the intrinsic link between impermanence and leading a life that is not devoid of suffering, but one where we learn to navigate suffering with mindfulness and equanimity.

Joy in the midst of suffering is, for me, one of those gnarly Zen things. We do the work to create the opportunity for joy--to be silly, to have a good drink, to make love, and figure out the craziness of life. If we don't live in that joy, then what are we doing this for?
