[IMCW-Engaged-Sangha] sanctuary protest tomorrow @ White House 11am

Subject: ACTION ALERT: White House Rally on Thursday June 1 at 11 AM

Dear Sanctuary Team,

Please join Rev. Rob Hardies, Rev. Rob Keithan and Rosemary Dodd (All Souls' Summer Intern focusing on Sanctuary and Refugee Support) at the White House on Thursday June 1 at 11 AM to protest the cruel and inhumane deportation of Liliana Cruz Mendez. Showing up to support individual people is a critically important way to draw media and public attention to the injustice that impacts entire communities.

Liliana is a long-time community leader and member of CASA, a Latino and immigration advocacy-and-assistance organization. She is the mother of two US citizen children -- ages 4 and 10. Clergy and faith activists from the DMV Sanctuary Congregations network gathered with Liliana and her family before her ICE check-in on Thursday 5/18 in Fairfax. We heard her words of appreciation for the support, and we offered our love and prayers for her and her family. Tragically, ICE took her into custody and then moved her to a detention center three hours away in VA.

Please join us to stand up and say NO to these deportations that are tearing apart families, leaving US-citizen children mother-less, and causing fear and grief to ripple throughout our communities. We will be gathering at the White House at 11am on Thursday to make our faith voices ring loud and clear. We hope you can join us! And please invite anyone else who may be interested.

If you can attend, please email Rosemary, RDodd@allsouls.ws, to let us know that you're coming.

In Faith,

Rob

I remember being inspired by a short NPR newscast recently regarding statistics saying that 80% of persons on Medicaid are already working and that there are many reasons why the remaining 20% aren't working.

Lastly, they said that in general, cuts to Medicaid, increased "deep poverty".

I'm specifically interested in bringing to light the facts around what cuts to Medicaid would mean and that all voters are aware of the implications.  This issue could help turn the tide in mid-term elections.

I also truly believe that health care is a right and not a privilege.

Perhaps we can get together for coffee or other to discuss and divide and conquer??

I'm away Memorial Day weekend and from June 1 thru June 6.

Be well,

Harris

Hi Becky,

I haven't made much progress on the immigrant/refugee teach-in. While I haven't completely abandoned it, I'm not sure how I'm going to proceed. I'd be happy to work with you and whoever else wants to join in on the healthcare/medicaid teach-in. Maybe it will help motivate me on the immigrant/refugee teach-in.

Be well,

Dear Downtown Dharma ListServe,

I was a regular attendee and member/one of the founders of the volunteer group some years back but had to relocate away from the DC area. It was such a wonderful experience that I just could never bring myself to unsubscribe from this list.

I'll be visiting D.C. this weekend and would love to join the Sunday sit but I have lost track of when and where you meet.

Wondering if someone would be so kind as to forward that information?

Really looking forward to reconnecting with this community - however briefly.

Best,
Candice~

Yes, we do have class. Glendora Myers I think is the name of the guest teacher. I'll let the list know.

Thanks to both of you for piping up!  If nothing else, just having a weekly check in (doesn't need to be in person) with someone would remind me of the work that I need to be doing.  I don't think the organizing is particularly hard, it's just staying persistent when there are so many competing priorities in one's life!  Harris, I completely agree that there are so many aspects of healthcare we could tackle, weather it's the technical mechanics of how various pieces work or the more philosophical discussion of right vs. privilege.

I am around if we want to find a time to get together after Memorial Day.  I may have time early afternoon either June 3 or June 4th.  Or,  I might be able to do an evening the week of May 30th.

Hi Scott and Becky,

I'm interested in partnering!

Becky, did you say that you knew someone who might be an expert in this area?

Hi Everyone,

We had a wonderful get together at Nancy's last weekend.  A lot of interesting discussion and some delicious food!

I have offered to host the next potluck which will be Saturday, June 17, 5pm - 8pm.  I am in the Takoma DC neighborhood, a short walk from the Takoma station.  Please RSVP if you'd like to respond and I'll send out my address and contact info.

Regarding teach-ins, I had offered to organize one on healthcare/Medicaid. I've made modest progress so far.  I'm wondering if anyone would like to partner with me and help maintain some momentum?

Becky
