[Downtown Dharma Listserve] BuddhaFest 2015

Dear friends,

As I'm sure you know, BuddhaFest, a wonderful festival of films, talks, meditation, and music, will be happening at Artisphere in Arlington, VA from June 11-14. BuddhaFest promises again to be a rich and enlightening experience.

I particularly wanted to let you know about a unique opportunity at BuddhaFest this year to explore issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion within Western Buddhist communities that we have explored in the Downtown Dharma (IMCW/Church of the Holy City) community: "Beloved Community: Healing What Separates Us", Sunday, June 14, 12:30-2:30pm.

The event features Tara Brach, who will open the session with a dharma talk on "The Trance of the Unreal Other", and Rev. angel Kyodo williams Sensai, a visionary Zen teacher who recently spoke on this theme at a meeting of Buddhist teachers at the White House. Following Tara's talk, she and Rev. angel will participate in a panel discussion along with Femi Akinnagbe, a dear friend and longtime IMCW practitioner. Femi is currently a medical student at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, where he is an active community member of the Common Ground Meditation Center, helping to facilitate the center's men's group, and serving on its Inclusivity Advisory Council, and People of Color (POC) sangha steering committee. Eleanor Hancock, director of White Awake, who is facilitating IMCW's White Awareness program for teachers, staff, and board members, will moderate the panel discussion.

Audience participation will be an important part of the program. We hope you can attend and bring your own wisdom, questions, and insight to this important community conversation. Our hope is that this event can serve as a public forum that brings out our collective sense of the challenge, hope, and possible avenues towards multicultural, inclusive community. For a full program description, please visit BuddhaFest.org here and scroll down - the full festival schedule of events is listed in chronological order. Ticket information is also available on this page.

Given the BuddhaFest theme this year, "Engaged Buddhism", there are many other wonderful offerings to choose from. If you would like to familiarize yourself more fully with Rev. angel's work, she will be giving a talk ("Embodied Life, Liberated Life": bringing body centered, interactive practices together with Dharma teachings) later in the afternoon (4:45-5:45), the same day as the Beloved Community program.

I hope to see you June 14th!

Warmly,

Hugh Byrne

Re: [Downtown Dharma Listserve] Kudos to Rebecca Ratner on her interesting study about going out alone

Yay Rebecca is right! Before I move to DC I used to travel here to work and had a decent Per diem so i used to go out to nice restaurants in Dupont Circle by myself.

And after I moved here I thought why stop? So I have no problem going out to a nice fancy dinner and theater or movie by myself. Going by yourself you can get great tickets – I got second row seats to the Bolshoi ballet at the Kennedy Center a few years back.

It makes for great people watching too. I enjoy it a lot.

Technologies: Laravel (PHP), REST/JSON, AngularJS
Application: Publishing platform/CMS for DOD Web Sites
Location: North Crystal City, walking distance to Pentagon, good Metro and parking
Team: 15 in total, 6 developers on tech team
Style: Agile, committed to open source, TDD, pair programming, standards, best practices, etc
You: American citizen, conversant in the technologies, able to work full time onsite
Plusses: Open-source contributor (show us your work on Github), Veteran, recognized expertise in any of the technologies, strong background in PHP.

If you're interested in learning more, please email me back with your phone number and I'll put you in touch with the TEKsystems recruiter who needs to fill my soon-to-be-vacant position.

Thanks and regards,

Re: [Downtown Dharma Listserve] Buddha Brunch

Hi again Downtown Dharma -- just sending out a reminder about Saturday's Buddha Brunch.  Always room for more!  Colleen

On 5/8/2015 9:20 AM, Colleen wrote:

Hi All – our next Buddha Brunch will be Saturday May 16th at 11 AM at my home at 1850 Potomac Avenue SE, a few blocks down from the Stadium/Armory metro.  Parking is usually plentiful as well and bike locking is easy – either at the front porch or signpost at the sidewalk.  The tradition of these potluck brunches is to bring enough to share of whatever you'd care to bring and I'll provide a vegetarian main course and beverages.

I would like to throw a topic out for discussion at the brunch – embodiment.  Most of us have grown up in a tradition other than Buddhism and typically have come to the practice as adults, absorbing the dharma through study, reflection, discussion, and so on.  We learn about the 4 Noble Truths, the Eight-fold Path and try to understand what these mean in our everyday lives.  Activities of the mind which can transcend the intellectual realm when connected with felt inner being.  We meditate, typically focusing on the breath, sometimes engaging in a form of body-centered inquiry to ground us in the present.  These are some of the things that come to mind for me when I think of embodiment and try to understand this key component of the practice.  I would be deeply grateful to talk about what embodiment is for you.

Please let me know if you are coming to the brunch and if I can give you any info on getting here.  Looking forward to seeing you next Saturday!

With gratitude (and curiosity and delighted anticipation) – Colleen Garibaldi

Dear Downtown Dharma Sangha Members,

Over the last few years, Buddha Brunches have become a great 'off the cushion' activity to develop community, engage in interesting conversations about mindfulness, and of course, enjoy good food. Many of us have gotten to know each other though the brunches.  These gatherings are a lovely complement to the meditation we do together on Sunday nights or in other venues.

We haven't had anyone come forward recently to offer to host and it would be great to get more brunches on the calendar!  Hosting is a wonderful opportunity to further your practice and to support the sangha.  If you are interested, let me know.

Take care,
Becky

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Intentional Community?

Hi, everyone.  I'm thinking of buying a home in the area (Rockville? Gaithersburg? Takoma Park?  Silver Spring?  Clarksburg?) and am thinking of getting a place where I can have a few roommates.  I would love to have other Buddhists or like-minded roommates and perhaps have 2-3 group sits per week.

I'm trying to gauge what sort of interest there might be out there in our community for this.

I would love any feedback anyone has to offer.

Many thanks.
Marc

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Teen Mindfulness Retreats this Summer

Hello!

I am excited to share with you a wonderful summer opportunity for teens. Inward Bound Mindfulness Education (iBme) is a non-profit organization that runs mindfulness retreats for teens across the country. I have personally staffed their teen retreats and it's such an incredible gift to witness the transformation that this unique setting offers. This year, iBme is offering a retreat in Madison, VA. We'd love your help in spreading the word and directing any interested teen you know to our program.

iBme offers participants a chance to learn self-awareness, mindful communication, and techniques to calm and focus the mind - the foundations for success in all areas of life. Participants spend time each day learning mindfulness meditation - a scientifically proven practice that builds emotional resilience, inner strength and well being. Visit iBme's website or watch a video about their retreats.

Teens and parents consistently share powerful feedback about their experience:

"I learned about having hope instead of worry." - Mei, age 16 (teen)

"After a couple of days my whole outlook on life was changed. It was an awesome experience. I would encourage any teen to come here" . – Josh, age 15 (teen)

"The counselors were wonderful and I couldn't be more pleased with their positive impact on my daughter.  Their ability to connect with teens, to actively listen, wisely impart knowledge, infuse joy, compassionately hold their confusion -- it is all a blessing of the greatest proportion.  Thank you." (parent)

A flyer is attached, and you can certainly email me with any questions, as I will be serving as a volunteer staff on one of the retreats and have served as staff in the past.

Much metta,
Em
