[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Looking for temporary housing in DMV area, 1-3 weeks

Dear spiritual friends,

I'm reaching out to you with hopes that one of you might know of anyone who might have a room available for 1 to 3 weeks in DC for one person (moi). A lot of people leave DC for vacation this time of the year, so if you know of anyone who might be looking for someone to housesit, pet sit or just has some small private space available that want to lease,  please let me know. I wanted to reach out to people I know and trust before plowing my way through other exciting resources, such as craigslist.  I'm hoping for something as soon as possible through 1st or 2nd week of August. I have a friend who's offered a couch, but the apartment doesn't have any AC. In the current roasting period that we're experiencing in DC, I'm hoping to find a safer alternative.

A little more information about me below:

I'm in my 30s, responsible, and have lived in DC for the last 5 years (Mt. Pleasant, Cleveland Park and Chevy Chase neighborhoods). I'm currently between housing. I'm originally from Europe, then made my way to DC after living in NM and  the Bay Area for quite a few years. I used to work in clean energy and international development until recently. I'm easy going, pretty quiet and have a meditation/mindfulness practice. I love to cook (for myself and others) and love animals, if you have any furry friends who need loving and taking care of.

Thank you,

Daria

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] getting to IMS via train/bus is not too hard, I recommend it

Hi all,
I've been driving to IMS in Barre Massachusetts for a few years now and I recently decided to see if I could get there via public ground transportation. My motivations were (1) it is a long drive which is not good for me post-retreat (2) the climate crisis.

I was happy to find out that this is totally doable and cheaper than I expected. The tricky part is that public transportation will take you Worcester, then you still have to get to Barre. Cab is an option for the last leg (reportedly $50), but I've been able to get rides via IMS' rideboard, once from a town in Connecticut on a NYC commuter train line and once from Worcester.

There are many bus/train/ride options that will get there.  Here was my most recent itinerary.
DC to IMS:
5:20 am Amtrak DC to NY Penn, arriving 8:45 am, $53
*walk 1/2 mile to Port Authority bus terminal. Get breakfast and enjoy being in NYC for a second*
10:30 am Peter Pan bus to Hartford. Transfer to another bus to Worcester arrive 2:35 PM, $37.50
2:40 pm picked up by fellow meditator. (bonus, in a Prius) ($gas donation)
Arrive IMS about 4pm.

IMS to DC
1:15pm left IMS with different meditator (another Prius)
2:50 PM Amtrak from Springfield directly to DC. Arrive in DC 10:30 pm. $74

Total cost under $200. Carbon impact... better than the alternatives.

It's easier to get back because there are trains straight from Springfield and you can ask for a ride there at the end of a retreat. Many of the cars leaving IMS will be going through Springfield, which is located conveniently at the intersection of I-90 and I-91. Unfortunately I don't think people generally check the ride board to see if someone would like to be picked up there.

Sharing because now that I've figured out what the options are, this way wins over driving hands down. It takes some coordination (for the ride part), getting up early on the way there (not that different from retreat schedule), and surely takes more time than flying. I'm fortunate to be able to do work on my laptop so it's not "lost" time. It feels great to have the transportation part of my retreat experience be ethically aligned. It's also been delightful to see things and meet new people by traveling this way.

Warmly,
Erin

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] This Sunday at Flow: Softening the Hard Places

Greetings Friends,

This Sunday from 6:00 to 7:30 pm we will gather at Flow Yoga, 1450 P St NW. Just a reminder that at this new location, the front door closes at 6:05 so to join the class, you'll need to be on time.

Unless you're a monastic in extended seclusion, you're probably faced with the challenge of at least one difficult person who, for the time being anyway, features regularly in our daily life. When interacting with this person, how can our practice support us in not getting thrown off balance, in staying true to our values and intentions? In our internal experience, how might the Dharma support us in the suffering that comes with wishing someone to be other than they are? How might we soften the hard places that can develop over time in our work, family and friendships, without selling ourselves out or necessitating that someone else change? Join us on Sunday to explore this territory, the Dharma of the Difficult Person.

Unfortunately, our meeting space is not wheelchair accessible.Cushions and back jacks will be provided and we can go over how to make those arrangements comfortable for those of you who are used to sitting in chairs. If you are able to come early to help set up, that would be most appreciated.

I look forward to seeing you on Sunday at Flow!

Kristin

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] This Sunday at Flow: Effort as Life Force

Greetings Friends,

This Sunday from 6:00 to 7:30 pm we will gather at our new location, Flow Yoga, 1450 P St NW. After being away for all of June, I'm delighted to return to this Sangha where I'll be teaching more regularly for the rest of the summer.

This Sunday, we'll explore mindfulness of effort. Each act of speech or body begins on the inside with effort, grounded in our view and embodying our intention. Whether on or off the cushion, it is in effort, that our sense of mastery can manifest and grow.

Unfortunately, our meeting space is not wheelchair accessible.Cushions and back jacks will be provided and we can go over how to make those arrangements comfortable for those of you who are used to sitting in chairs. If you are able to come early to help set up, that would be most appreciated.

I look forward to seeing you on Sunday.
