[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Meditation on Saturday?

Hi Downtown Dharma crew!

I was planning to attend the Daylong at Lamont Dharma House on Saturday, but just saw that it's been cancelled.  I'm thinking I'll have "mini retreat" at my apartment, and wondered if anyone would like to join!  Always so much easier practicing with others.

I live in Columbia Heights/ Petworth (about 10 blocks from the Columbia Heights metro stop).  I'm thinking we could practice from around 1-4:30, then have tea until 5!  Coming for any portion of that time is just fine.  If you're interested, let me know!

All best,
Jennie

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Sunday at The Potter's House

Hi friends,

I hope all is well.

Our sangha is scheduled to meet this Sunday, February 25th from 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm, in the Community Room at the Potter's House in Adams Morgan. The address is 1658 Columbia Rd NW, Washington, DC 20009.

Chairs are available and you are also welcome to bring your own seat. If you would like to help set up, please arrive five to ten minutes early. Also, please note that the space is wheelchair accessible.

We will be exploring the 4th foundation of mindfulness this week: mindfulness of the dhammas. The dhammas were the buddha's models of consciousness, or "how the mind works." There is a lot to explore here so we will be working with just a few interesting pieces. Looking forward to it.

Many blessings,

Devin

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] New Direction Of Study?

Hello Sangha,

Thank you for the sit and discussion last evening.

Devin mentioned that we would begin a new direction in our studies and practice.

What he mentioned sounded unfamiliar. Can someone please tell me what we'll be studying?

Thank you.

[dcphp-dev] Developer Health Survey

Hi DC PHP members,

Maybe you've had thoughts like:

  • How can I possibly stay healthy if I'm sitting at a desk and coding all day?

  • I'm overwhelmed by my looming project deadline. How can I manage to get all this done?

  • I have constant pain in my wrists. Am I doing something wrong?

These kinds of things have crossed my mind over the years, and I'd like to understand how others have handled health concerns as developers.

My name is Matt, and I'm a software developer and Python meetup organizer. I'd love if you could share how creating with code has impacted your health.

The goal of this survey is to learn the issues that developers are worried about the most. Knowing the major issues, I hope to build a site for the community that can be a resource for those facing similar challenges.

Developers deal with specific physical and mental challenges from our work. We should be equipped to surmount these barriers to live our happiest lives.

With that in mind, can you help me identify our community's biggest issues by answering a few questions? Your feedback would be immensely appreciated.

  1. How and when do you think about your physical or mental health? Does it cross your mind often? Can you share an experience that makes you think about this topic?

  2. What parts do you find hard about maintaining your health and wellness? Why?

  3. What have you tried to do to improve your health and wellness? What worked? For how long?

  4. Which aspect of your health do you find harder to maintain:
    - Your physical health (nutrition, exercise, sleep)
    - Your mental health (stress, focus, social connection)
    Can you elaborate why?

I'm listening and would be happy to keep you informed about my work if you are interested. I don't expect to receive any soul gushing, but I can assure you that all responses will be kept in strict confidence.

If you're willing to share, the survey is available on Google Forms at https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1hOMT8a0NAYG3Tge7T4D7F0VEAwPK3glf44Yw-6j6M2E/edit. Anyone interested in this subject is welcome to email me as well (matthewlayman@gmail.com). I'd love to chat about it with you directly.

Thanks so much in advance!

Matt Layman

P.S. If you could share this survey with your friends or colleagues, that would be amazing!

P.P.S. Apologies if you've seen this survey message from multiple lists. If you've already filled it out, thank you! If you haven't, would you consider taking some time to do so?

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Sunday Sangha @ The Potter's House

Hi friends,

It's a new week and yet the timeless in all of us is still... well... timeless. One of the many joys of meditation is opening into this mystery.

Our sangha is scheduled to meet this Sunday, February 11th from 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm, in the Community Room at the Potter's House in Adams Morgan. The address is 1658 Columbia Rd NW, Washington, DC 20009.

Chairs are available and you are also welcome to bring your own seat. If you would like to help set up, please arrive five to ten minutes early. Also, please note that the space is wheelchair accessible.

This week we move into the third foundation of mindfulness: thought. Bringing awareness to thoughts can be both fascinating and liberating. I'm looking forward to exploring these practices together.

With love,

Devin

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Sunday Sangha at Potter's House: 2nd Foundation of Mindfulness

Dear Sangha,

We will meet on Sunday, February 4, 2018, 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm, at the Community Room in the Potter's House (1658 Columbia Rd NW) in Adams Morgan.

Chairs are available and if you are able to bring your own sitting gear, please do. If you would like to help set up, please arrive five to ten minutes early. Also note that this new meeting space is wheelchair accessible.

We will continue our tour of the Four Foundations of Mindfulness by further exploring the second foundation: Vedana or pleasant, unpleasant, and neutral feeling tones, related to bodily sensations, emotions, social interactions, thoughts, and experiences.

Speaking of unpleasant, I have a vocal cord cyst and can't speak much at this time. Though I will be there on Sunday, the wonderful IMCW teacher, Amy Smith has graciously stepped in and will be leading class.

A couple of follow-up items:

1) At the end of 2017, the sangha decided to have peer led classes. These are scheduled for the third Sunday of each month.  If you are interested in leading, we ask that you please email lindanaini@gmail.com and devinmaroney@gmail.com. If we don't have a volunteer two weeks prior to the class, one of the IMCW teachers will lead.

2) We are still planning to finalize a name for the Sangha since we've moved from Dupont Circle. We will be voting on Sunday. If you have a name you would like to put in for voting, please email me. Some of the names that have been suggested so far:
- Downtown Dharma
- AdMo Sangha
- Sunday's Pause
- Sunday Sit @ 6
- Potter's House Sangha
I hope you can join us on Sunday.

Peace and blessings,
Linda
