[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] What you missed at last weekend's Community Board meeting

Hi friends,

This past Saturday, we celebrated the inaugural gathering of the new Downtown Dharma Community Board. This is an outgrowth of recent gatherings that culminated in a new mission statement for our sangha, confirming that we are "community-driven and volunteer-led."

If you weren't able to join for the meeting and potluck, you can check out the notes here:

One item in particular to call out: a small group of Downtown Dharma community members has just started planning for a weekend residential retreat on September 20-22, 2024. This will be open to everyone in our sangha, held at IMCW's newly-purchased retreat center (Seven Oaks) in VA. Please save the date—and if you'd like to be on the informal volunteer committee, email Ana Maria or Nate.

Warmly,
Vince

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Tonight at Downtown Dharma: Transforming Our Suffering in the Moment

Whether you are new to meditation or practicing for decades, this might have happened to you: Sit down to meditate, perhaps as our daily routine, inspired by some new teaching, the promises of deep practice, or as part of long retreat, and, full of motivation and intention, but we find that we are unable to remain in the moment. The mind is off, entangled in some drama, ensnared by self-judgement, or removed altogether into a recounting of our favorite movie. Anywhere but here. We might emerge at the end of the sit with a measure of frustration, the sense that it's all gone so wrong. Welcome! Your experience is fully part of the practice and integral to the path of liberation.

Join us this evening at Downtown Dharma where we'll explore the Five Hindrances, one of the most helpful of the Buddha's lists to understand, even to memorize, and to put to use not only on the cushion, but everywhere in daily life.
I hope to see you there!

With appreciation,
Kristin

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Re: First meeting of the Downtown Dharma Community Volunteer Board

Hi all,

Friendly reminder about the DD community volunteer board meeting this Saturday:

During our last mission and vision discussion, we considered what it means to be sustainably "community driven and volunteer led." From that discussion, we decided to start new Downtown Dharma Community Volunteer Board meetings--a quarterly meeting to discuss plans for DD, make decisions, and create opportunities to engage. We welcome everyone to attend.

We'll have a potluck dinner together afterwards! Please bring something vegetarian.

When: Saturday March 23rd, 5:30 pm

Where: DC Writer's Salon, 1807 18th St NW, Washington, DC 20009

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Anti-racist support group for white people

Hi!

My friend Kyle Wehrend and I are launching an online support group for white people who want to deepen their commitment to anti-racism and be less performative and more effective.

This is for white folks who've read books on anti-racism but need support putting anti-racism into practice. Or you've posted about racial justice on social media or shown up to protests, but you want to have more impact on stopping racism. Or you're feeling shame about being white because of the violence and injustice in our society that seems to be getting worse.

Over eight weeks, you will learn to identify and overcome common barriers to anti-racist action through group processing of emotions, mindfulness exercises, radical genealogy, and Internal Family Systems (IFS), an evidence-backed, trauma-informed approach to helping people heal, grow, and make change.

We'll meet Thursdays 12:30-1:45pm ET starting April 18. The cost is $75 per session (with a sliding scale based on need). Here's more info: mohler.coach/whiteness2024/

There's a form to fill out when you go to that link, but you can also email me if you're interested! jeremy@mohler.coach

[Note: This is not therapy. While we will encourage you to explore the root causes of your emotions, we will not be diagnosing and treating mental health issues in this group. However, what you learn about yourself while in this group may serve as an impetus for further exploration with a therapist. This group does not replace the care of therapists or other health care professionals.]

With warmth,
Jeremy

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Daylong Meditation Retreat Opportunity in DC - March 23

Dear friends,

I'm so excited to see the many retreats being offered in our area, and Jason Waterman and I have one more to add to the mix. We both teach meditation at various places around the DC area and online, and I had the great privilege to teach with this sangha a couple years ago, thanks to Vince Lampone. :-)

Since this is a DC-based retreat, I thought it would be fitting to offer it to this group as well. IT's coming up this Saturday and we have about 10 spots left! More details below and on the Eventbrite page. Let me know if you have any questions about it!

'Tis the season for spring retreats! What a wonderful time to refresh our practice in community with others. Jason Waterman and I will be holding a daylong retreat on Saturday, March 23 at the beautiful Friends Meeting House in Washington, DC.

The theme of the day is Be Free, Not "Me." We will be exploring the Buddhist teaching of not-self (anattā) and its practical applications in helping us be more present, more open, and more free. Check out the event page where you can register and learn more details about the day.

With metta,

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Spots Available: Mar 17 NOON Contemplate Haiku Hike

Hello all!

Looking for St Patrick's Day plans? A few spots have opened up on the Contemplative Haiku Hike on Sunday, March 17 at Noon! If you would like to join us, please sign up on the list by Saturday (and please be careful not to accidentally delete others): https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1lgw62-Cm7R6U-tSwiIx9Wpgaf54I64eT66HLiMg0E0Y/edit?usp=sharing

Further details: We will meet at Saku Saku Flakerie in Cleveland Park. I will have pens and paper, as well as "cheat sheets" about haiku. Other than that, please dress for a ~2.3-mile hike on uneven terrain (boots strongly recommended) and consider bringing a water bottle. For awareness, the route is a moderate hike through Rock Creek Park with some inclines and creek crossings on stones.

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

Looking forward to seeing you there!

Judy

Subject: RSVP: Sangha Activity - Celebrate Spring with a Contemplate Haiku Hike
To: <downtowndharma@googlegroups.com>

Hello!

To help usher in spring, I'm excited to organize a sangha "mini event" for those interested :)

What: Please join me for a Contemplative Haiku Hike through Rock Creek Park! Participants will learn how haiku poetry relates to mindfulness and Zen Buddhism and receive brief instructions on how to write haiku. We will then take a mindful 2-mile hike, taking breaks to write our own haiku about the nature we observe. (Haiku are short, accessible poems that typically evoke nature and contemplation of the present moment. Find examples of famous haiku here.)

When: Sunday, March 17, Noon-4pm - Join us for an alternative Saint Patrick's Day! (Rain date is April 14, and I will inform RSVP'd participants at least 24 hours in advance if the event will be rescheduled due to inclement weather.)

Where: We will meet at Noon at Saku Saku Flakerie in Cleveland Park for a ~30-minute introduction. Then, we will hike approximately 2.3 miles on Reservation 630 Trail to a cafe in Mount Pleasant. See the tentative route at the bottom of this email.

Who: The event is capped at 12 participants. Please RSVP at this sign-up sheet. Other than the cap, all are welcome--so feel free to sign up a friend! While our pace will be slow and steady, this event is best suited for people who feel comfortable hiking more than 2 miles on park trails that are uneven and have some steep inclines and declines.

How: No experience necessary! We will go over simple instructions on how to write haiku. Pens, paper, and a handout on haiku will be provided. Please bring $$ for drinks or snacks at Saku Saku Flakerie and Dos Gringos Cafe.

Why: While haiku is not a strictly Buddhist form of poetry, haiku and Zen are closely linked historically and thematically. Haiku relies on the senses and contemplation of the present moment, so both new and experienced meditators may enjoy practicing haiku as a way to engage with mindfulness. See additional resources at the bottom of this email for more info.

Questions? Please reply to this email to reach me at lavelle@bu.edu.

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] This Sunday: Insight Dialogue & the Power of Being Open 🌅

Hi friends!

I love the phrase "Openness opens." And perhaps it resonates for you, too. Maybe you have felt the power of approaching other people and ourselves not with a fixed view of how things should be, but with an openness to possibilities and welcoming of how things are?

Don't get me wrong, it's natural to want to control and predict. It's what our brains were made for! But when we are relating to others, being open helps us tap into our deeper wisdom. We can better understand what is arising in our inner experience and what is present in the connection with another. Even more juicy, our openness can support the openness of those around us.

This Sunday at 7pm, we'll keep up our monthly Insight Dialogue practice. With the foundation of Pause and Relax - and before tackling Attune to Emergence, Listen Deeply, and Speak the Truth - we'll explore the guideline of OPEN. I'll be offering guided meditation and some fun relational practices along the way. I hope to see you there—online or in person!
Be well,
Alex

Letter from the CEO

March 2024

One team. One community.

A whole lot of support.

Mission of Love Charities, Inc

6180 Old Central Avenue

Capitol Heights, Maryland 20743

Hello Friend,

I’m writing on behalf of Mission of Love Charities; we have served homeless and low-income families in the Maryland/DC area for over 30 years.  We take tremendous pride in focusing on our clients’ basic needs for food and housing. Regrettably, the challenges we face are not only persistent but growing in complexity. Over the past year alone we have seen a substantial increase in the demand for food security, adequate shelter, and essential services for members of our community in need. These are challenges that no single organization can tackle alone. It indeed takes a collaborative community-driven effort to make a meaningful impact.

As a nonprofit, our organization continually operates from grants, fundraisers, and donations. With this said, we have put together a list of ways you can assist us with serving the community in 2024.

·       Fall Gala- October 4th: This is an event to recognize leaders in the community who support our Mission, Vision, and Values.

·       Bags to School -August 15th: This is a backpack distribution event geared toward school-aged youth in the community. At last year’s event, we distributed 353 backpacks.

·       Golf Tournament- TBD: This will be our 3rd annual event. Last year we raised 28K toward the renovation of our new building.

·       Coat and Shoe Giveaway- October 15th: We will be distributing new coats and shoes for needy families.

·       Thanksgiving Holiday Food Basket Giveaway-November 21st. :250 turkeys are given to families in need.

·       Hunger and Homeless Food Drive November 11-14th- Collecting non-perishable items to stock the food pantry.

·       Toy Holiday Giveaway- December 21st: MOLC will distribute new toys to children.

The act of giving, whether through donations or volunteering your time, is not just about contributing; it is about making a difference. In return, we ensure transparency, providing regular updates on how your generosity has been instrumental in the advancement of our mission. Together, we have the power to create a foundation of support that can lift our neighbors to safety and stability.

We believe that every act of kindness resonates throughout our community, and we are sincerely grateful for any form of assistance you choose to offer. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us for further information or to arrange a visit to our operations to see the impact of your contributions firsthand.

Thank you for considering supporting Mission of Love Charities. We look forward to hearing from you.

With warmest regards,

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Richard Lang to facilitate 'The Headless Way' @ DD on Sun, Mar 3rd

Dear Yogi-friends,

We're blessed with a unique opportunity this Sunday, to explore our direct, unfiltered experience of the One Reality, and our relationship to it, with longtime "Headless Way" facilitator, Richard Lang.

What we're guaranteed to experience, should we choose to embark on this inward journey, is a refreshingly modern way of discovering who we really are – the boundless, timeless awareness that is everyone's true Self. Richard will guide us through experiments - awareness exercises - that lead us directly to our central Reality at zero distance. We'll be guided to re-discover our headless nature, to notice the difference between what we are for others, our appearance, and what we are for ourselves, our reality.

The so-called "Headless Way" is an approach to awakening to our limitless nature through a series of simple, yet illuminating, exercises. This approach and its namesake experiments were developed by Douglas Harding (1909-2007), the brilliant philosopher-mystic whose 1961 book, "On Having No Head," introduced the "headlessness" practice(s) to a wide audience. You can learn more about Richard, Douglas, and the Headless Way at headless.org, and via Sam Harris' "Waking Up" app.

I can say that I have participated in multiple meetings, workshops, and retreats with Richard, and have found the experiments he offers to be fun, and immediate and practical for all people. I hope you will join in on the fun this Sunday evening!

If you can't make it Sunday night, but would still like to meet Richard while he's in town, please consult this schedule for other meet-up opportunities:

In-person: Sunday, 7 to 8:30pm @ Yoga District — 1910 14th Street NW, 3rd Floor, Washington, DC (please arrive 5-10 minutes early)

Online via Zoom: https://zoom.us/j/466237117?pwd=cGxHaTJlTVhBdldVSk8weDZuSW5udz09
