[Downtown Dharma Listserve] This Sunday

Dear friends,

We will meet from 7-8:30 online and in person at Yoga District, 1910 14th St. NW to meditate, explore the dharma, and connect as a community.  The topic will be pleasure and the dharma. Please review the details for attendance below.

With love,

Devin

Attending In Person
If you would like to come in person, you will need to register with the studio and submit proof of boosted vaccination. You will also need to wear a mask. For everyone's safety and for the viability of this offering, these requirements are not negotiable. You can register through the Yoga District scheduling site, and you can submit proof of vaccination to yogadc@yogadistrict.com   or present it in person at the studio. We ask everyone to register and submit proof of vaccination ahead of time so that we don't have long delays when we all get together.

We also ask that you try to come 10 minutes early – around 6:50. This will give us time to check folks in and acclimate to what is still a new space and process for most of us. Please note that the class is held on the 3rd floor, up two flights of stairs. There are rugs, bolsters, and folding chairs for seating. Please also note that we will be staffing these events ourselves so there will be no one at the desk to admit latecomers. The doors will be closed and locked at 7:10 and no one will be admitted after that.

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Apprenticeships at the Monastic Academy

Greetings Dear Community,

First, thank you for all the warm wishes for recovery from my bike accident. While progress is slow, I am getting better and am extraordinarily grateful for all loving support. I'm also appreciative for all that could have gone wrong but did not.

I just received a notice from a friend who is currently living at the Monastic Academy in Lowell, VT regarding the special summer opportunity for their apprenticeship program. If you're interested, be sure to check out the this Notion page with more details about what they're looking for and not looking for.

I look forward to being with you soon in Sangha.

With appreciation,
Kristin

Hi all,

Looking forward to discussion group this evening. Just a note - we will be wearing masks for the discussion part of the evening (and requiring everyone to be vaccinated and boosted).

Dinner afterwards will, of course, be maskless.

Thanks!

Luke

Hi everyone,

For this month's reading group we'll be discussing two articles by Thich Nhat Hanh in remembrance of his passing. I'll host at my house on Saturday, 2/19 at 6pm.

My address is 1039 Quebec Pl NW, Washington, DC 20010. Please reply to this email if you're planning to join so that I know how many seats to arrange.

Additionally, I was thinking about Travis's talk about community last night and I thought that it would be fun to do a shared dinner afterwards if that's of interest. I was thinking that maybe each person could bring a small dish to share and we could eat afterwards instead of going to a restaurant as we've sometimes done in the past. If you're planning to attend could you let me know if you like that idea and wouldn't mind bringing a small dish?

Here are the two articles :)

With love,

Luke

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] This Sunday: Trisha Stotler

Dear friends,

I am so grateful that Trisha Stotler, a longtime IMCW teacher and current Executive Director of the IMCW, is planning to share her insights with our community this Sunday as a guest teacher. She asked me to share this description of her planned talk:

The Ten Perfections, or paramis, are the Buddhist teachings that are specifically designed for bringing the path of awakening into the everyday life of a "householder" - that's us! They are a list of qualities you can develop in any situation, and when fully cultivated lead to liberation: Generosity, Virtue, Renunciation, Wisdom, Wise Effort, Patience, Truthfulness, Determination, Lovingkindness, and Equanimity. We may daydream of sneaking away to a tropical island with no responsibilities, but how do we use the mundane circumstances we currently find ourselves in - as spouse or partner, parent, boss or employee to name a few - to wake up here and now?

We will meet from 7-8:30 online and in person at Yoga District, 1910 14th St. NW to meditate, explore the dharma, and connect as a community.  Please review the details for attendance below.

With love,

Devin

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] This Sunday with Downtown Dharma: Finding Freedom from Fear's Distortions

Greetings Dear Community,

We know we're in the grip of explicit fear when we feel its characteristic tightening of our chest or when it shakes our knees and widens our eyes. Yet implicit fear, nearly undetectable as such, can pervade our lives, distorting perception, constraining the heart, and limiting our sense of possibility.

This Sunday, we'll explore how the dharma can support us in meeting fear and changing the inner balance of power.
We will gather this evening from 7:00-8:30 PM both in person at the Yoga District studio at 1910 14th St. NW and online. Details are at the bottom of this email. If you plan to join in person, please especially take note of the need to register ahead of time through the Yoga District website.

I hope to see you there!

Kristin

5 Ways You Can Help Support

Mission of Love Charities

Time seems to be flying by and that’s why we wanted to take a quick moment to remind you about two of the Mission of Love Charities’ new year’s resolutions for 2022.

First, we are committed to increasing awareness of our workforce development programs and food & basic needs services as they are the foundation of our organization. Secondly, we are focused on empowering, educating, and advocating for MORE low-income individuals and families in order to diminish poverty in our community.

But we need help! That is why we created this list of 5 ways that you can help us achieve our goals and uplift the community.

Untitled design _6_.png

Workforce development programs help to provide our clients with the educational tools to enter the workforce or the reskilling to pursue a new career. Your monthly donation will help bring new classes to our roster and offer them free of charge to those in need. No amount is too small!

It’s super easy to do! Follow the Facebook prompts to support a cause for your birthday, and type in Mission of Love Charities in the search bar.

The best way to stay up-to-date on what is going on at Mission of Love Charities and to share it with friends and family is to follow us on social media. We’re on most networks — InstagramLinkedIn, and Facebook! You can also join our email list—we promise not to spam you!

Food drives and fundraisers are a GREAT way for you to help us generate awareness for MOLC and help the community. We have a lot of ideas that can help you get started!

Speaking your mind about laws and policies related to workforce development and food insecurity is a great way to get involved to create change while also educating others on such important topics! One way to do so is by reaching out to elected officials. Don’t know how to contact your local official? Find out here!

These are just a few ideas about how we can help the community—TOGETHER! If you have any other ideas to help support MOLC, please email us at bwiggins@molc-inc.org.
