[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Hugh Byrne on "Mindful Politics" this week @ Lamont Dharma -- plus new book club forming on Death

Hi friends-- happy end-of-memorial-day weekend!  Just a brief note with some events coming up this week at the Lamont Dharma House in Mt. P...

Hugh will kick off his monthly discussion and practice series on maintaining equanimity in the midst of the political campaigns.  We hope you can join!  And we're also starting a new book club and discussion group on Death.  See below for more details on both.

Let me know if you have any questions, I'm happy to email.

warmest best wishes,
Megan

Hugh Byrne this Thursday @ Lamont Dharma...

"Mindful Politics: Engaging Wisely and Compassionately in Challenging Times"
A Conversation and Meditation Series with IMCW Guiding Teacher Hugh Byrne
Beginning Thursday, June 2, 7:30-9:00 pm

How do we engage wisely and kindly with the challenging emotions, mind states, views, and opinions churned up in the current political and electoral environment?

Join IMCW guiding teacher Hugh Byrne  from June to November at the Lamont Dharma House for a monthly conversation series that will aim to help us cultivate equanimity and wise engagement in the lead up to the general elections.

This meditation and discussion series will meet monthly beginning on Thursday, June 2, with Sundays adjacent to the IMCW All Souls sit after that.  For further details on the series and schedule, check out our website for more info.

Join Our New Reading and Discussion Group on Death

What different approaches do human beings take to comprehend death?
Does death give life meaning, or make life meaningless?
How can we face the reality of death in our own lives?

These are difficult questions that we often avoid. The folks at the Lamont Dharma House are forming a small reading and discussion group to contemplate these questions in a direct, sustained way through reading, discussion, and spiritual practice– and we welcome others from the community to join.

To learn more about what the group will read and do-- and for more info on how to join-- click here

Re: [Downtown Dharma Listserve] Re: Open places to meditate?

@Maha - what a lovely idea. The conservatory at the U.S. Botanic Garden comes to mind, though it's in DC right beside the Capitol building - so not necessarily convenient to VA. It is open every day 10-5, including all weekends and holidays.

Curious to hear others' ideas and suggestions :)

I guess it's far but that depends where you live. Of course you can meditate anywhere really. I do.

Re: [Downtown Dharma Listserve] Digest for downtowndharma@googlegroups.com - 2 updates in 1 topic

Good question:  I'd look into the Center for Mindful Living in Tenleytown,  the Washington Buddhist Vihara in upper northwest (16th St), and a variety of temples in the surrounding suburbs. There's a beautiful Thai Buddhist temple on Layhill Road in Silver Spring - they might be fairly open to people wanting to come in to meditate, but you'd probably want to call them.  Let me know what you find!

Does anyone know of any temple or some such place where you can go to meditate whenever you want? I'm looking to go sometime this later afternoon or early evening with a friend. I've been googling/calling around to temples in the area but not much luck.

Thanks!

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Join Hugh Byrne's new "Mindful Politics" series + room sublet June-July

Hello friends,

One of our beloved All Souls teachers, Hugh Byrne, is going to lead a discussion and meditation series at the Lamont Dharma house.  See below for more details. We hope you can make it!

Also, with folks scattering to Barre and such for long term retreats, we've got a room sublet opening in our house this summer.  Check it out if you or someone you know coming to town might be interested.

I'm happy to answer any questions on either of these things, just drop me a line!

Warm wishes,

Megan

Coming Up at the Lamont Dharma House...

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Checking in

Because of my work schedule, I have not been able to come to the Sunday night sangha for the past 4 to 6 weeks, and I miss it! I have been reading about how important it is to practice in a sangha. I hope I can start coming again regularly in the next week or 2 and be there most of the summer. If there have been any announcements of interest to all, I hope they will be posted here. Last hope: that members will not find this posting to be too personal a plea. Metta to all, Joan
