[dcphp-dev] Happy Holidays - No December Meetups

Hi everybody--

Due to the holiday schedules and the fact that there's no speaker lined up for December, we're canceling all the meetups for December.

What I'm going to do instead is send out a survey next week that I hope you'll take a minute to respond to. Attendance has been down recently, and so if you haven't been coming, we'd like to get your input on to what we can do to make this worth coming to.

Look for that on Tuesday.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to email me.

Thanks,

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Finding Your Still-Point with Moving and Sitting Meditation, Sat Dec 8, 9:30am-12:30pm

Dear Sangha friends,

I wanted to share an upcoming half-day meditation session that Peter Mosher will be holding at the All Souls Church next Saturday, December 8.  He's a wonderful practioner and senior teacher in the area, and I would highly recommend it.  If you want a very mindfullness-filled day - you could go to this session and then the Buddha Brunch that Amy is hosting immediately following :)

Finding Your Still-point with Moving and Sitting Meditation

9:30 am - 12:30 pm
at All Souls Church, Unitarian
1500 Harvard St NW

We will do moving and sitting practices with Metta - Loving Kindness meditation. The fee requested for this program is $35. Church members are requested to pay $25. However, what ever you are able to pay is fine. You may pay at the class. Dropping in at the last minute is alright too, but pre-registration is helpful.  Please email Peter at ahimsa.practices.peter@gmail.com.

An Ahimsa Practices program which draws from several traditions, primarily Taoist and Buddhist, to help us cultivate mindfulness and serenity. Through these practices we can develop the ability to go within and find our quiet center from which we can respond wisely to whatever comes our way. As we cultivate awareness with practice, we learn to live our lives more compassionately toward our selves and others. As we develop equanimity and serenity it effects all those around us and promotes peace in our families, our communities and in our world. You are invited to drop into a quiet space of calm abiding and awaken to your true nature in harmony with all of Nature.

[dcphp-dev] Reminder: NoVA Happy Hour Tonight

Reminder that I'll be camping out at Rustico Ballston tonight from 6-8PM for plain old random socializing? Will there be tech talk? Only if you want (and we're PHP people, so somebody will probably want to), but there's no set agenda and no requirement to talk tech.

Make sure your RSVP is accurate (i.e., if you're not going to make it, don't RSVP or if you've already RSVPed, change it to "no") so I know what kind of table to get. Also, if you're not able to make it by 6 but will get there by 7 or so, that's fine--just RSVP and leave a comment on Meetup so I know you're coming later.

See you there!

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Buddha Brunch, Sat. Dec. 8, 12:30

Greetings to all,

For approximately the last year and a half, members of the Downtown Dharma sangha have hosted semi-regular "Buddha Brunches" to share food and discussion on a topic or reading.  I hope you can come to the next Buddha Brunch that I will be hosting on Saturday, December 8 at 12:30.

The reading that I have selected comes from a 1998 commentary by the Dalai Lama on the first verse of the Eight Verses of Training the Mind. The link is here:  http://www.dalailama.com/teachings/training-the-mind/verse-1   It would be about 8 pages when printed out and covers a range of significant concepts, so I recommend at least an hour to read the piece, plus whatever additional time you would like for ruminating :)    (I've pasted the first verse and the first paragraph of the commentary below.)

I hope you are able to come to share food and discussion!  If you do intend to come, please send me a quick email (amydona@gmail.com).  Then, on Thursday, Dec. 6, I'll send out an confirmation email with my address and any additional, necessary logistical details.

-Namaste

With a determination to achieve the highest aim
For the benefit of all sentient beings
Which surpasses even the wish-fulfilling gem,
May I hold them dear at all times.

These four lines are about cultivating a sense of holding dear all other sentient beings. The main point this verse emphasizes is to develop an attitude that enables you to regard other sentient beings as precious, much in the manner of precious jewels. The question could be raised, "Why do we need to cultivate the thought that other sentient beings are precious and valuable?"

There's a new post on Mdhousing's blog, Governor O'Malley Urges Maryland Shoppers to Buy Local on Small Business Saturday and Throughout the Holidays.

Annapolis, MD - As Maryland shoppers get ready to pull out their wallets for the holiday season, Governor Martin O'Malley is encouraging them to spend their money at local small businesses.

"Successful small businesses are the foundation for growing a strong economy in Maryland," said Governor O'Malley. "We encourage all shoppers to 'Buy Local' on Small Business Saturday this Nov. 24 and throughout the year."

Sandwiched between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Small Business Saturday encourages holiday shoppers to patronize area brick and mortar businesses.  The day is an opportunity for "mom-and-pop shops" to showcase what they have to offer and how they can compete with big box and online shopping. For consumers, the day is also a chance to be more informed about what their community has to offer.

As part of Main Street Maryland's promotional efforts to encourage buying local, 170 shops and restaurants located in the state's 26 designated Main Street communities are offering special discounts and deals starting on Nov. 24.
