[dcphp-dev] Free HTML5 Mobile App Training in Bethesda & Arlington Dec. 4–5

Hi all (and happy Thanksgiving!)

I'll be teaching a free intro class to Mobile App development using HTML5, next week, in Bethesda Wednesday Dec. 4 (http://apigee-bethesda-2013.eventbrite.com/) and in Arlington Thursday Dec. 5 (http://apigee-arlingtonva-2013.eventbrite.com/). I've taught this class a dozen times before, for over 3,000 students in cities such as San Francisco, LA, Denver, Austin, and at conferences such as HTML5 Conf and OSCON. Many of of the students come from a PHP background and are attending to learn more about Mobile, so if you're on this list you'll probably be in good company!

The premise is simple: in one day, you'll learn everything you need to know to build your first HTML5 Mobile App, including: a HTML & JavaScript refresher, PhoneGap, jQuery, jQuery Mobile, and how to use a backend-as-a-service (Usergrid).

The classes are completely free (and all the software & services we'll be using are too — most of them are even open-source). Hope to see you & your colleagues there!

Cheers,
Tim

[dcphp-dev] Beverage Subgroup Tonight

At long last, the beverage subgroup is back in Arlington.

So if you want to get away from the burgeoning holiday stress between 6-8 tonight, drop by Rustico, right across from Ballston Common Mall (parking there is pretty cheap).

Be sure to RSVP here so I know how big a table to try to get: http://www.meetup.com/DC-PHP/events/147253082/

Re: [dcphp-dev] WordPress + Varnish resources?

What I would do first is check varnishstat which will tell you what your overall cache hit rate is. Anecdotally you probably want that to be in excess of 90%. If it's not there are three likely possibilities: 1) too large of a site for the size of the cache is forcing cache evictions, 2) not a long enough cache expiration period or 3) poor varying rules.

The first should be fairly straightforward, if you know you have a lot of pages, images, PDFs, etc. check and increase the size of the cache pool.

For the second, Varnish is usually configured to use the backend's cache expiration policy. So if the backend sends cache headers for 5 minutes the item will only be cached by Varnish for 5 minutes. If you don't have a lot of traffic for the same URI within the cache period than Varnish isn't going to do you a whole lot of good. Increasing that period will help, but keep in mind that you'll need the backend to probably tell Varnish when to purge or ban the appropriate URIs when they do change if you don't want to serve stale content.

For the third, Varnish is usually configured to vary on cookies; that is if the user has cookies with the host Varnish will pass the request to the backend and not try to serve it from the cache. Most of the time this is configured with a black list of cookies, that is Varnish will attempt to remove unnecessary cookies from the header and then check to see if there are any left; and example would be removing Google Analytics cookies (__utm[a-z]). One problem with this approach is that various JS components, other analytics, proxies, etc. may set their own cookies that can interfere with the caching. I'd recommend looking at varnishlog and filtering by misses to see the headers as they go by. Another option on cookies is to whitelist certain session cookies; essentially say if the header contains a pattern then pass it to the backend. Depending on how the session cookie for Wordpress is constructed this may be easier or harder than the black list.

I claim no special knowledge of Wordpress or typical VCL configuration for it, but I have had to tweak Varnish reasonably extensively for Drupal in a variety of circumstances.

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Fwd: Next Buddha Brunch, Saturday, Nov 23, 12pm

Reminder:  Let me know if you'd like to join for the buddha brunch this Saturday, and then I'll send directions to those attending.

If the reading seems daunting, don't let that deter you - just read the first two pages, or none at all, and you can still participate in the discussion!  Just for some context, I chose the topic of "discernment" because I often struggle with finding the balance between wanting to bring certain things in my life, or being pro-active to make changes, without veering into the domain of grasping or clinging.  I find it's a difficult space to navigate, and I think the only key is to develop skills of wisdom and discernment.

Hope to see many of you then,
Namaste,
Danya

Hi Jim,

If you're using mysql 5.6, take a look at the new InnoDB memcached integration.

http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.6/en/innodb-memcached.html

With it you can avoid the complexities of having to manage the state of the data within memcached and use mysql in the normal way while reaping the benefits of memcached.

[dcphp-dev] Smithsonian Hackathon this weekend! Nov 16-17

Dear PHP afficionados,

Join us for a weekend of civic hacking to showcase our nation's treasures at the Smithsonian!

The Smithsonian American Art Museum invites web and software developers, designers, and other big thinkers (individuals or teams) to create concept prototypes for part or all of a new digital interpretive solution for the museum's Luce Foundation Center. The Luce Foundation Center for American Art is a visible art storage and study center that provides new ways to experience American art. Visitors can select an area to explore at a glance with more than 3,000 works from the permanent collection in 64 secure glass cases.

The current interpretive system includes ten computer kiosks that provide the public with information about every object on display and include discussions of each artwork, artist biographies, audio interviews, still images and nearly 70 videos created exclusively for the center. The content is available on the Luce Center's website, too. The interface was developed between 2004 and 2006 and uses a proprietary content management system that does not have much flexibility. The museum seeks a new, flexible solution that will allow digital access to our collections data, interpretation, and multimedia content as well as improved integration with social media. Participating developers will be given access to the API for the museum's enterprise digital asset network (EDAN).

The two-day hackathon will include a behind-the-scenes tour of the Luce Foundation Center, a demo of the existing kiosks, and an overview of the requirements for the new solution. Food and caffeinated beverages will be provided. The event will culminate on Sunday afternoon with presentations and prizes.

To sign up and for more information check out: lucehackathon.eventbrite.com

Feel free to email me at Mayer-CantuD@si.edu if you have any questions!

Best,
-- Diego

Re: [dcphp-dev] APC

A couple of thoughts I had looking through this thread...

First, storing the key in shared memory is fine, but permissions changes between API calls won't be reflected until the key expires. This may or may not be a big issue for you, but you should consider the security implications of your time-to-live. You can always set a short TTL (60 - 120 seconds) but that kinda defeats the purpose.

Second, I would give some serious thought to whether or not the constant database hits would actually be detrimental to your app. How many requests are we talking about? 100 per minute? 1,000 per minute? 1M per minute? 1 per hour? I wouldn't design for scale until you have an actual need to scale.

My 0.02.

Re: [dcphp-dev] APC

If you don't need to share that key across web servers, APC will work just fine (and faster than locally installed memcached). If/when you upgrade to PHP5.5, you'll need to install the APCu extension ( http://pecl.php.net/package/APCu). APC is not supported with PHP5.5 because the default opcode cache is now Zend Optimizer+ ( https://wiki.php.net/rfc/optimizerplus)

Hey all,

I'm building an API for an in-house PHP application, and I find myself checking permissions for an API key at every request. In order to avoid a database access on every request, I would like to cache keys and their corresponding privileges in shared memory. PECL APC seems like the easiest and best way to do this. But I just wanted to check with the list to see if I am missing and potential pitfalls or preferable solutions.

Thanks,

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Parents/Mom's - Book Group

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone knows of any sanghas for new moms or parents? I have a 1 year old and would like to get together with others to discuss practicing Buddhism as a new parent.

If there isn't already something like this, then I was thinking of starting a book group to read and discuss Buddhism for Mothers (http://www.amazon.com/Buddhism-Mothers-Approach-Yourself-Children/dp/1742373771) or another similar book for parents. Email me if you are interested in joining. I would be willing to host the discussion and kids would be welcome.

Best,
Diana
