[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] KM group looking to add 1 - 2 new members

Hi everyone,

If you are interested in joining an IMCW KM ("Kalyana Mitta" Spiritual Friends) group that meets monthly to support one's meditation practice, our Dupont Circle group is looking to add 1 – 2 new members. We meet monthly on Wednesday evenings from 7 – 8:30 pm.

This group is appropriate for people who have at least 2 years of meditation practice and a commitment to maintain a daily practice (even if that doesn't actually occur every day - it's the aspiration and intention that is important to us). We typically start with a short check-in, followed by a silent meditation sit (25 min.) and then a longer check-in related to our practice and mindfulness in daily life. We also sometimes incorporate the discussion of a relevant article or book.

Please visit the IMCW site and go to the section on Spiritual Friends (KM) groups (IMCW > Programs > Spiritual Friends (KM)) to apply. You can also send any questions to me at rkratner@yahoo.com.

With metta,

Rebecca Ratner

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Downtown Dharma Sangha Summer Releasing Ceremony 2022: Letting Go to Live.

Green and White Minimalist Nature Hello Spring Facebook Post.png

Downtown Dharma Sangha

DATE:  7/3/2022  TIME: 7:00 - 8:30 PM

Location

  • In-person: 1910 14th Street NW,  3rd Floor, Washington, DC 20009

Facilitator- Travis M. Spencer

Mindful Helper: Elicia Renee Wright

This Sunday's topic and practice will be an opportunity to participate in a Releasing Ceremony.  A Releasing Ceremony is a symbolic proclamation of "letting go" and allowing.  We will also participate in a heart-centered practice of listening and sharing with one another and discuss our aspirations for our lives as we move through Summer 2022.

  • During my dharma share, I will explore the following questions:

    • What am I releasing in my Life?

    •  How will "letting go and allowing" permit joy to flourish in my life?

Quote

"Letting go gives us freedom, and freedom is the only condition for happiness. If, in our heart, we still cling to anything - anger, anxiety, or possessions - we cannot be free."

― Thich Nhat Hanh

Re: [Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Downtown Dharma this Sunday 6/26 with Shawn Shafner

Thanks so much to those who joined on Sunday for the Downtown Dharma gathering. It was such a joy to meet folks and a humbling honor to share teachings.

Here's a link to the Satipatthāna Sutta text that we were reading, as compiled in "In the Buddha's Words," translated and edited by Bhikkhu Bodhi.

If you still wish to offer dana - generosity - for the teachings, you may do so via venmo, @shawn-shafner
Your offerings are also shared with the IMCW community and Yoga District.

Lastly, if any questions have arisen from our session, or there's any feedback, thoughts, etc, please feel free to reach out.

I look forward to practicing with everyone again soon! Thanks so much, and wishing you all the best.

Re: [Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Book Club - Rob Burbea

Hi spiritual friends,

Much gratitude to BI for organizing the materials for the next book club!  (See message below).

I have the honor of hosting the in-person gathering on Saturday, July 30 from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm.  My apartment is in DC's West End neighborhood: 1255 25th ST NW.

If you can join, please RSVP by adding your info here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/147vqy0Zg3JIPBiLHwyi9IYl_FvKTNhrIys-NfXGAAD8/edit?usp=sharing.  This list will help me: 1) to make sure all attendees can get entry into the building,  2) to gauge interest in a post-symposium, pot-luck dinner, and 3) to distribute a zoom link to any folk who may be able to join from afar.

If you can, please RSVP by July 23.

May all be swell,

-Roman

Hello fellow sangha members & friends,

As most of you know, each month we pick a book or piece of content to read together and discuss. This month, we will be *listening* to a series of Dharma Talks by Rob Burbea. Rob passed away from pancreatic cancer in 2020, and is beloved by many. He has had a huge impact on my own path, so I'm excited to share his teaching and discuss with y'all. If you'd like to read a little bit about Rob, here is a blogpost on his life and teachings.

We will be listening to the following two talks for our discussion:

Rob Burbea's teaching style is soulful and creative, so I encourage an openness and curiosity as you listen.

If you find you have more time, and you'd like to listen to more, then the following three talks are the subsequent talks in the series. Our discussion will center on the first two talks, but I wanted to provide some additional listening in case you are really flowing with Rob's Dharma and want to continue listening.
I do not believe we have picked a date yet for our discussion and meeting. Roman has kindly volunteered his apartment to host the in-person gathering, but we will also have a Zoom option for folks like me who will be calling in remotely.

Roman, do you have a preference for what date we have the discussion? I would like to propose Saturday, July 23rd for the date. Please reply to this thread and let us know if that works Roman :)

Blessings to you all for the Summer Solstice!!!

Warmly,
BI

P.S. Someone recently reminded me we're approaching our *3 year anniversary* for book club 👏💥💓

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Online Event - Tibetan Buddhism

Hi Downtown Dharma,

I hope this finds you all well.

I am emailing you to invite you to an online event next Thursday, June 30th called "Building A Practice in Tibetan Buddhism." The focus of the event will be how to weave practice into modern life -- the teacher, Claire Villareal, has a passion for exploring the intersection of modern life and Tibetan wisdom. Claire is terrific, so this will be a fun and engaging event, including time for Q&A for all of us to ask Claire some questions.

The event is being hosted by Dharma Gates. For more on the event, and more about Claire's background, please visit the event page here. You can register using that link! It's an afternoon event, so it will be happening from 2:00pm - 3:30pm EST.

Let me know if you have any questions or thoughts! Hope to see some of you there 🙂

In solidarity, and with kindness,
B.I.

This Sunday's topic and practice is a continuation of our Mindful Living series. This Sunday will be an opportunity to participate in a heart-centered practice of listening and sharing with one another. We will discuss how we stay grounded in joy in the mist of presenting uncertainties (eg. climate change, mass shootings, racism, war, etc) During our time together we will discuss  the following questions:

  • What is my joy regimen?

    • How do I maintain my joy regimen during these times of increasing uncertainty?

    • How do I see sangha supporting me?
