Talk Description
PHP is sitting at an all time high for usage, with it running over 80% of the world's websites. But how healthy is the PHP Community? In this talk we will examine the good and the bad of the PHP community and talk through some of the pain points that we may have experienced. But we'll leave understanding the power of the community when it works together and understand why (and how) you should be helping to grow the community circle larger.

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] The Untethered Soul book discussion

Dear Friends,

Hope you're well and staying dry.  A couple of us are interested in doing a book discussion on "The Untethered Soul - the journey beyond yourself by Michael A. Singer". This is a phenomenal book in helping us in our journey to find peace and emotional freedom.  Here's a brief description of the book:

The Untethered Soul begins by walking you through your relationship with your thoughts and emotions, helping you uncover the source and fluctuations of your inner energy. It then delves into what you can do to free yourself from the habitual thoughts, emotions, and energy patterns that limit your consciousness. Finally, with perfect clarity, this book opens the door to a life lived in the freedom of your innermost being.

Please let me know if you're interested.  Once we a list of interested individuals, we'll figure out what days and times work for most people.  Right now we're thinking the location will be somewhere in Tenley, one possibility is the center but not yet sure the cost of renting space and availability but will look into it.

Peace & blessing,

Mahar

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] helpful text for tonight's class

Dear friends, for this evening's sangha theme, I will be sharing on contemplating the impermanence of the body. The attached handout may be helpful, if you'd like to read it or bring a copy along with you today. It is section 2 of the Discourse on the Four Foundations of Mindfulness, from Chanting from the Heart, by Thich Nhat Hanh.
Hope to see you this evening!
Kaira Jewel

[dcphp-dev] September Monthly Meeting | Wednesday, September 14, 2016 @6:30 PM | Baby Steps -> Giant Leaps. (Xdebug for Beginners) with Sean Prunka

Please register and more info at: https://www.meetup.com/DC-PHP/events/233297609/

THIS WEDNESDAY!

Baby Steps -> Giant Leaps. (Xdebug for Beginners) with Sean Prunka

var_dump($foo);

print_r($bar);

die($baz);

Are these your current debugging tools? Wouldn't it be nice to see $foo, $bar, and $baz while the code is still being executed? Watch it change, live? And not have it just dumped all over the output of your otherwise beautiful app? We'll install XDebug, set up your IDE to use it (with examples shown for PhpStorm, Netbeans, and ZendStudio), then we'll actually walk through some badly written code that needs to be debugged.

Sean Prunka (@sprunka)
Sean Prunka has been a PHP developer since roughly 1998 and an active member of the PHP community since 2010. Sean currently works as a senior developer for PunchOut2Go. Outside his PHP life, he is an active member of three community theatres in his area of rural VA. When he's not too busy with work or theatre, Sean helps his wife wrangle their 6 kids between their own theatre rehearsals, band practices, soccer, swim meets, and other such kids' activities.

Drop-in and make-up students are welcome, space permitting.

This series will introduce the practice of mindfulness meditation and give an overview of helpful means for connecting with the body, working with thoughts, opening to difficult emotions, developing wisdom and deepening compassion. We will also explore how to develop a daily practice, incorporate walking and eating meditation in daily life, and cultivate self-compassion/loving-kindness practice.

Register.

[dcphp-dev] Update on Government Employees attending Conferences

So this is somewhat old news, the change came back in 2015.  But it's new to me so I wanted to share (given it has direct relation on the conferences I run).

Looks like the Government changed their rules on attendees going to conferences.  You don't have to go through the onerous process of sending it up for approval all the way up the chain to the Office of Personnel Management anymore.

Each agency can make their own decisions about sending people to conferences:  http://www.successfulmeetings.com/News/Products-and-Services/Feds-Ease-Up-on-Conference-Restrictions-for-Government-Employees/

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Class returns to Church of the Holy City starting this Sunday

Dear Sangha,

Beginning this Sunday the 11th, we will again be meeting from Sundays from 6:00 to 7:30 pm Upstairs at the Church of the Holy City. (1611 16th St NW)

I hope you all can join us this week as we return to practice in this beautiful space.

The entrance we use is on 16th street, but off to the right side of the main front doors. As church services are in progress at the time that we start, please proceed directly up the spiral stairs when you arrive so that we do not disturb the congregation.

Peace,

Erin
