[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Downtown Dharma Reading Group - Next Meeting - July 24, 6- 7:30pm

Hello!

On Saturday, July 24 we will meet for the Downtown Dharma reading group to continue our discussion of the book Emptiness: A Practical Guide for Meditators by Guy Armstrong.

Meeting Information:
We will be doing a combined in-person/Zoom meeting this time. We ask that participants only come in person if they have been fully vaccinated.

July 24, 6:00-7:30 pm

Address: Harris Rosensweig's place 1372 Randolph St. NW, #103
Washington, DC 20011

Optional group dinner afterwards—we went to dinner after our first in person meeting and thought we could do a repeat with a casual dinner somewhere afterwards.

Zoom Information will be sent in a future email.

Reading:

We'll be reading Chapters 7 through 13 this time (pages 83-171).  If you don't get to read all of it, that's ok!

Below are some of the major topics we discussed during our first discussion.

  • Emptiness- what is it?
  • Self- What does "no self" (or not self) mean? What are common beliefs about the self that we hold? What does Armstrong claim is wrong about those beliefs?
  • Sense bases and the five aggregates
  • What is "self" really? How do we create a view of the self through thinking and attachment?
  • What is the "conventional" versus "fundamental" view of the self?

Chapters 7 through 13 cover:

  • Beyond Self
  • Bearing Emptiness
  • Karma: Patterns of Becoming
  • Who is Reborn?
  • The End of Karma
  • Abiding in Emptiness
  • Cessation and Nibbana

We plan on having an opening question to be sent out in a future email to get the discussion going and then have free form conversation after the opening responses.

If you can make it, kindly email me at hrosensweig@hotmail.com to RSVP.

Be well,

Harris

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Class tonight!

Dear friends,

We will have class online tonight at the usual time, from 7-8:30. We will meditate, connect, and explore the dharma

The title of the class tonight is "What's going on?: Intention and the search for truth." I'll invite us to look at intention as a reflection of mind states and as a way to better understand and guide our practice. I look forward to seeing everyone and I offer my sincere apologies for the late notice!

Location: Online Zoom ID:https://zoom.us/j/466237117?pwd=cGxHaTJlTVhBdldVSk8weDZuSW5udz09

With love,

Re: [Downtown Dharma Listserve] Re: Next Month's Reading Group

Hi Kavya

Thanks so much for putting all of this together and thanks to you Justin for offering your place!

We could potentially go to Taqueria habanero afterward for Street tacos and sit outside or any one of the places nearby.

See you soon,

Harris

Hi all,

Meeting Information:
We will be doing a combined in-person/Zoom meeting this time. We ask that participants only come in person if they have been fully vaccinated.

June 26, 6:00-7:30 pm
Address: Justin Koufopoulous' place (thank you, Justin!) 2726 13th Street,
Washington, DC 20009

Optional group dinner afterwards--I thought that since this is our first in person meeting in a long time, we could all go out for a casual dinner somewhere afterwards. I'll be thinking of options, but if you all have suggestions, let me know.

Zoom Information is at the bottom of this email.

Reading:

We'll be reading Chapters 1 through 6 this time (pages 1-82) Apologies, I had sent out 1 through 8 before, but I think this amount of reading is more manageable for this discussion. If you read ahead, that's ok! Also, if you don't get to read all of it, that's ok too.

Instead of discussion questions this time, below are some of the major topics from this book. I encourage you all to think about what you learned about these topics, your impressions, and any questions you have or issues that the book raised for you:

Topics for discussion:

  • Self- What does "no self" (or not self) mean? What are common beliefs about the self that we hold? What does Armstrong claim is wrong about those beliefs?
  • Sense bases and the five aggregates

Hi all,

Once again, as a part of the Downtown Dharma reading group we will read a book over the course of several months. This time, we'll read Emptiness: A Practical Guide for Meditators by Guy Armstrong. This is a continuation of our exploration of concepts from the last reading group; the book dives into some core concepts of anatta (no-self) as well as other difficult concepts such as the nature of phenomena, karma, compassion and many more.

We will be doing a combined in-person/Zoom meeting this time. We ask that participants only come in person if they have been fully vaccinated.

Meeting information:
  • Date and Time: June 26, 6:00-7:30 pm (with an optional group dinner after)
  • In-person meeting: Justin Koufopoulos's place in Columbia Heights (address forthcoming)
  • Zoom link will also be provided closer to the meeting time.
Reading: For this session we will read chapters 1 through 8 (Introduction through "Bearing Emptiness.")

And as a reminder, everyone is always welcome to attend reading group, even those who have not attended before. It is also ok to attend if you have only done part of the reading.

Looking forward,

Re: [Downtown Dharma Listserve] Next Month's Reading Group

I hope it's alright to post this here, but I wanted to see if anyone would like this new meditation cushion I bought that's just much too big/high for me (I'm 5 feet tall!).  Hard to return and more satisfying to pass along to a fellow DC meditator :)

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] This Sunday

Dear friends,

The Buddha taught of 8 worldly winds that bear down upon humanity and influence our behaviors: gain, loss, success, failure, praise, blame, pleasure, and pain. Part of the practice is waking up to - and getting comfortable with - the feeling of the winds blowing in our faces. This week I'd like to invite us to explore the four types of winds that we often habitually run away from (loss, failure, blame, and pain) and what it is like to face them.

We will meet this Sunday on Zoom from 7:00 - 8:30 PM to meditate, explore the topic, and connect with each other. The link is below.

I look forward to seeing you then!

With love,
Devin
