[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Influencing the Future of IMCW

Greetings Dear Sangha,

As you know, our Downtown Dharma Sangha operates in the context of the Insight Meditation Community of Washington. For the past year, IMCW has been in the early stages of a process to review and renew itself for the next stage of its service to the greater Washington area.

On behalf of all four teachers, I'm excited to offer our Downtown Dharma sangha in particular this next opportunity to weigh in. In particular, we want to know what you value — your meditation practice, your teacher(s) and the programs we offer — and what your hopes are for our future as a community.

Dear friends,

I look forward to our gathering this Sunday, February 2 at Flow Yoga Center (1450 P St NW) from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM. The topic will be compassion in sangha/community. We will meditate, take part in a couple of compassion practices, and share in community.

Please make every effort to arrive on time (no one will be at the front desk to unlock the door after 6:05 PM). Our meeting space is unfortunately not wheelchair accessible and there are two flights of stairs. Cushions, back jacks, and folding chairs will be provided. If you are able to come 10 minutes early to help set up, that would be most appreciated.

Sangha Announcements

Monthly Dinner: Once a month, usually on the first Sunday, those who are interested gather for dinner after class.

Monthly Book Club: Once per month, those who are interested meet before class to discuss dharma related readings. An email will be sent to announce the readings, time, and location.

Seasonal Potluck: Once per season we will have a potluck instead of a traditional class. We will meditate together before dinner and then eat and socialize. The time and location will remain the same, 6:00 - 7:30 PM. The next potluck will be April 5.

Peer Led Classes: If you're interested in facilitating the class for an evening, please email Linda Naini <lindanaini@gmail.com> or Devin Maroney <devinmaroney@gmail.com>. Once we've reviewed the topic with you, we can find a time for you to teach and put it on the calendar.

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Sunday @ Flow

Hi friends,

We will meet this Sunday at Flow Yoga, 1450 P St NW, to meditate, connect and explore the dharma. The topic this week will be right effort, one of the elements of the eightfold path.

Please remember that the front door closes at 6:05 so please be on time. Our meeting space is unfortunately not wheelchair accessible and there are two flights of stairs. Cushions, back jacks, and folding chairs will be provided. If you are able to come 10 minutes early to help set up, that would be most appreciated.

Peer Led Classes: If you're interested in facilitating the class for an evening, please email Linda Naini <lindanaini@gmail.com> or Devin Maroney <devinmaroney@gmail.com>. Once we've reviewed the topic with you, we can find a time for you to teach and put it on the calendar.

Community Announcement: As I mentioned before, Betsy Brach, a member of the IMCW community and longtime student of the dharma will be offering a two mindfulness based psychotherapy groups in Bethesda, one for women and one for all genders. The groups start next week and there are a few spots still available. Please see the attached flyer for details.

[dcphp-dev] My HTTP Testing Utilities

Hello all,

I was working late last night on a personal docker project. Soon to
be reading over Docker for Developers by Chris Tankersley.

While I was working I discovered that I had to make a docker network
so that my docker project always had the same gateway. XDEBUG seemed
to require me to specify the xdebug.remote_host as the Gateway IP
Address even though it was the detected IP Address when using
xdebug.remote_connect_back. I also needed a simple iptables rule. I
am using OpenSUSE Tumbleweed.

I spent hours trying to get this working and had even had it working
through ssh running in a docker container.

Anyway while I was trying to create the docker network, I realized
that I still do not trust the internet CIDR network tools. This is a
result of work I had done for ScienceLogic back in 2011. They
required me to make a network tool using an IP Address and CIDR to
discover the subnet mask and IP range. So I knew that there had to be
some documentation out there to help me get my own done.

I ended up using WikiPedia and a blog post by Justin Ellingwood on the
digitialocean website.

I added the project to my HTTP_Testing_Utilities github repository.

There are also 3 other utilities:
1.) curl HTTP output for testing HTTP redirects, cookies and HTTP headers
2.) HTTP spider for spidering websites which requires MySQL
3.) MySQL profile, example utility. I have since enjoyed running in
in MySQL workbench, but you can use the output here to make a graph in
excel.

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Sunday Sangha @ Flow Yoga Center

Dear Friends,

We look forward to our gathering this Sunday, January 12 at Flow Yoga Center at 1450 P Street from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM.

All four of our regular teachers, Devin, Kristin, Linda, and Travis will lead this special gathering, to mark the beginning of the New Year. After our regular meditation period, it's been the sangha's tradition to reflect on the Three Refuges of the Buddha/Awareness, Dharma/Truth, and Sangha/Love and have a refuge/protection cord ceremony for those who would like to participate. This annual "refuge ceremony" can help affirm and remind us of the beautiful and powerful resources of our practice.

We look forward to practicing together and being with you.

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Dharma Reading Group this Sunday

Hi friends,

I wanted to send a friendly reminder about our next Dharma reading group meeting on Sunday January 12th at 4 pm. The meeting will take place at Danny's house at 3220 17th St NW Apt 201 (Thanks for hosting!).

To continue upon our theme of socially engaged Buddhism, this month's readings are on History, Sociopolitical Movements, and Buddhist Practice. A Google drive link as well as a pdf are provided.

Corey Castle, a social worker (MSW) and mindfulness facilitator support mindfulness in the African American community and Communities of Color through meditation, mindful movement, and the healing power of music.

Currently, he facilitates weekly mindfulness groups with social workers and other social service staff. Corey supports participants in their own self-care and compassion for themselves and others. Through mindfulness, Corey can engage the world with an open heart and a greater sense of friendliness to his being.

During our time together, we will discuss how we express love for self and others.
