Re: [Downtown Dharma Listserve] Volunteer opportunities with the Sangha - Loaves and Fishes

Hi Danya,

What a wonderful idea.  Thanks so much for putting this together on behalf of the sangha. I'd like to volunteer on March 22.

Thanks,
Jen Riddle

We discussed wanting to do a service-oriented project (not something political) and to be involved with the local community right around the sangha and where many of us live.  I've found a good opportunity volunteering with Loaves and Fishes, which addresses the issue of homelessness and poverty by providing meals to hungry and needy individuals. http://loavesandfishesdc.org/.   It is located at St. Stephen's Church at 1525 Newton St, NW DC.

They provide weekly volunteer opportunities, and I've signed us up for two dates: Saturday March 22 and Sunday May 18 from 11am-2pm.  We will help set up the dining room and then serve meals: the work is primarily plating and serving food, restaurant style to each seated guest.  We can come with a group as large as 15 people; I'll take volunteers on a first-come, first-serve basis.   Please email me (danya.greenfield@gmail.com) if you would like to join and let me know for which date.  If you have any questions, let me know.  I'll post again when it's closer to the date.

Thanks!

Some Background information about Loaves and Fishes:

Loaves and Fishes began as an outgrowth of St. Stephen and the Incarnation Episcopal Church’s practice in the mid-1960s of providing meals after Sunday services. When hungry nonchurchgoers began to appear in considerable numbers, the congregation launched a meals ministry and named the program Loaves and Fishes after the miracle described in the gospels. As Loaves and Fishes grew, other churches stepped in to help. We are now sustained by a partnership with 11 other churches, many of them in the suburbs, and diverse foundations, community groups, and individuals.

Our mission and goals are two-fold: to feed the hungry in our community and to educate volunteers and community members about hunger and homelessness. We are proud to serve a warm, healthy lunch to all who come to us without regard to their age, race, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, religious affiliation, or lack of it. We invite you to join us, as a guest, volunteer, or financial supporter. Meals are available around noon on weekends and federal holidays at St. Stephen and the Incarnation Church:

That sounds pretty good to me, Danya.  You can certainly count me in for the March date and possibly for the May one as well, but let's wait on that one a bit (I don't want to hog all the spots <g>).

[dcphp-dev] [job] Web Dev in DC

Hello,

We have an opening for a web developer with our team at the Naval Research Lab. It's primarily a PHP shop building web based applications on the LAMP stack. There are some apps written in Perl so some experience there is desirable. It's a great, casual environment where developers are given the freedom to explore new tech. I'd be happy to talk to anyone about it over the phone or at the next meeting.

There's a post about it here: http://startuphire.com/250144

It's a full-time job with great pay and benefits.

Thanks,
Steve

translated from the Pali by

"Once the Blessed One was staying among the Bhaggas in the Deer Park at Bhesakala Grove, near Crocodile Haunt. Then early in the morning the Blessed One put on his robes and, carrying his bowl and outer robe, went to the home of the householder, Nakula's father. On arrival, he sat down on a seat made ready. Then Nakula's father & Nakula's mother went to the Blessed One and, on arrival, having bowed down to him, sat to one side. As they were sitting there, Nakula's father said to the Blessed One: "Lord, ever since Nakula's mother as a young girl was brought to me [to be my wife] when I was just a young boy, I am not conscious of being unfaithful to her even in mind, much less in body. We want to see one another not only in the present life but also in the life to come.

"And Nakula's mother said to the Blessed One: "Lord, ever since I as a young girl was brought to Nakula's father [to be his wife] when he was just a young boy, I am not conscious of being unfaithful to him even in mind, much less in body. We want to see one another not only in the present life but also in the life to come."
[The Blessed One said:] "If both husband & wife want to see one another not only in the present life but also in the life to come, they should be in tune [with each other] in conviction, in tune in virtue, in tune in generosity, and in tune in discernment. Then they will see one another not only in the present life but also in the life to come.

"Husband & wife, both of them having conviction, being responsive, being restrained, living by the Dhamma, addressing each other with loving words: they benefit in manifold ways. To them comes bliss. Their enemies are dejected when both are in tune in virtue. Having followed the Dhamma here in this world, both in tune in precepts & practices, they delight in the world of the devas, enjoying the pleasures they desire."

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Volunteering with IMCW/Downtown Dharma

Hi All -

Buddy Brunch was well attended, and we had a great discussion about
engaged Buddhism, dependent origination, and how to bring Buddhist
practices into the workplace. Thanks to Lou Leonard for hosting and
choosing such a good topic.

We also talked about the possibility of organizing an IMCW/Downtown
Dharma volunteer opportunity at a local, service-oriented non-profit.
We talked about the doing a one-off, and having a monthly volunteer
opportunity as well. A number of people expressed interest in and
excitement for a volunteer day in February.

If you are interested in volunteering in February, or volunteering
with IMCW/Downtown Dharma, have some ideas, and/or some volunteer
coordination experience, send me or Danya an email.

Much Metta,

Scott

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Fwd: January Buddha Brunch

Just wanted to re-post this message since I added some new members to the listserve - the next buddha brunch will be this Saturday, January 25 at 12pm.  This is an opportunity to gather with a group from the sangha (generally around 8-10 people), share good food, discuss a reading selected and distributed in advance by the host, and generally discuss how we can support the deepening of mindfulness practice.  If you're able to join, email Lou, who is hosting, and he'll send directions and details, at lou.leonard@gmail.com.

Namaste,
Danya

Happy New Year all!

Mark your calendars for the next Buddha Brunch which I'll host on Saturday January 25th at noon. (I live less than 10 mins directly north of All Souls by bus or bike.)  As usual, this will be a potluck so dust off your fav quiche recipe (or just grab a bottle of OJ on the way over).

Let me know if you can make it. I'll send along a short reading and other logistics to those who are coming.

Warm wishes as we endure the Vortex,

Currently, we pull in meetup information and i've posted our last two

HI DC PHP-ers,

We've launched a new WordPress based site for our user group. While meetup has been great for organizing our events, I'd talked to Sandy towards the end of last year that it'd be nice to have an independent site that could archive our content, where we can post to speaker slide decks, maybe highlight discussions on the list, link to related groups and other PHP resources online and more.

Currently, we pull in meetup information and i've posted our last two talks. I'd like to find time to go back further. I also need to add a page listing related user groups. For now, comments are disabled, since I don't want to manage and deal with comment spam. How do you feel about outsourcing comments to disqus or a similar system?

Check out the page and let me know what you think. I'm using the default WP theme, its pretty good for an out-of-the-box design, and its mobile/tablet friendly to boot.

[dcphp-dev] February Topic

Speaking of our new site (thanks Oscar), I'd like to nail down our February topic.

A couple of people have approached me in the past about speaking, and I wanted to offer that date (Feb. 12) if you have your topic ready. Please let me know.

If I don't hear something in the next week, I'll schedule a talk I've been wanting to try out on Regular Expressions in PHP. But as Samantha's talk this month proved, the best talks come from people doing awesome things in our community, and I'd love to highlight some more of that.

Thanks,
Sandy

[dcphp-dev] Orange ElePHPants!

Just in case you missed the social media frenzy, my company is putting together an order for the plush ElePHPants.

Previously they've been tchotchkes at conferences, so this is probably your big chance to get one straight to your door.

If people want to go in on a HERD level for DCPHP, let me know.

Yes, the elePHPant will be sporting a php[architect] tattoo on his flip side, just like most of the custom elePHPants end up doing.

[dcphp-dev] More PHP startups in 2014

Hi all:

Happy New Year! For those of you who are making it a resolution to get started on a side project or company this year, I wanted to invite you to a community where everyone is looking to do the same - Founder Dating. FD is an invite only, online network for entrepreneurs to connect with other talented folks to start side projects, companies and share best practices.

You can apply to join here: http://bit.ly/1apq0uU

What makes FD unique?
  • High Quality: each member is carefully screened for quality and readiness - no recruiters or smarmy sales pitches. Identities are confidential, but the community includes former founders and early employees from Box, Gilt, Twitter, Pandora and Facebook, to name a few.
  • Balanced: the community is strictly 50% engineering and 50% non-engineering.
  • Global Reach: FD's online network allows you to connect with people across 23 cities for access to the best entrepreneurial resources without the barriers of a local meetup.
  • No Idea Necessary: Just be ready to work on a serious side project.
Hope it's helpful,

Neha
