Re: [Downtown Dharma Listserve] Favorite Guided Meditations?

I think I replied to the wrong email the first time, so:

Sam Harris. Easy call.

Joseph Goldstein's busy life meditation is really good too.

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Vegan Dharma Challenge 2017

Hello Dharma Friends,

I wanted to spread the word about the Vegan Dharma Challenge 2017. This is an event linked with a growing movement within Dharma communities of considering how our choices, particularly food, contribute to the massive suffering and death of millions of non-human animals. It is an invitation to extend the circle of compassion wider, beyond just humans and our beloved pets, to all animals through trying a compassionate diet for one month.

The founders of the Vegan Dharma Challenge describe it this way:
Compassion, ethical conduct and renunciation are all core ideals and values of the Dharma. We would like to invite you on a journey of exploring these themes, deepening your personal practice and protecting the world by following a vegan diet for one month. Through our time together we will provide talks and reflections on different aspects of veganism and the Dharma, as well as possibilities for sharing experiences, joys, challenges, recipes, and thoughts and questions with other participants.

Please consider it and share with dharma friends. You can register and learn more on their webpage: http://vegandharma.org/
You can also join their group on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/344472329272952/

Here are links to a couple articles where you can learn more about how animals are treated on factory farms:

And on a related note, Buddhist monk and scholar, the Venerable Matthieu Ricard, just wrote a book on this topic,  "A Plea for the Animals: The Moral, Philosophical, and Evolutionary Imperative to Treat All Beings with Compassion". You can see him speak briefly to the Huffington Post on this issue here:

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] In Search of Housing

Hi Folks,

My name is Jess and I am looking for housing! I am a recent transplant to the area; I came in June to do a 6 month contract job in Montgomery County. I was intending to move back to California, but I'm being lured by DC, so I will stay and explore that
.

Currently, I am looking for housing from January 25th - April 25th, but I have good options for short-term housing, so I can do any shorter amount of time within that 3 month time-frame, if you have a shorter offer. Also, I am open to (and hope to be) doing a longer-term arrangement if the fit is right. I am super flexible, so if you read on, and I sound like a roomie you'd be stoked to have, I can work on time-frames with you.

I will be working in Takoma Park during February and March, so I'm aiming to be no longer than a 30-minute trip from there in any direction. I don't have to be close to a metro, though that would be awesome. I do have a (bio-diesel fueled) car, and I would need a free street or driveway spot for her.

My max budget is $700 monetarily, but I have a ton of skills to trade, and great references.
Skills: I take care of people's pets professionally (outside of the house) and I also train dogs. I am a postpartum doula, and in the doula job I often cook for families - I have a lot of experience preparing traditional, minimal ingredient, wholesome and very tasty food. I am also a crisis counselor, and my work centers around students from high school through college. I organize homes (mostly basements and garages) for folks who don't have the time or emotional energy to do it themselves. I do transcriptions, and translation work (Spanish <--> English). I have taught, and am certified in infant, child and adult CPR, I have experience driving infants, children, and pets. And I have a green thumb!

About Me: I am an introvert, and as such, sometimes it just takes me longer to open/warm all the way up to new people. I spend a lot of time in the kitchen, making fermented food + beverages that I am happy to share.  I don't smoke, and I rarely drink, though I'm not opposed to it. I have a meditation and yoga practice. I am anti-consumerism, and I spend time actively trying to better my environmental footprint. I will try to make or mend
or convert
something before making a move to buy something. I like thinking about how to best employ humor to temper fear. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xlIrI80og8c)  I was head of household for 3 years in a
 diverse
community house (6 members) in Oakland, CA.

I am trained in Non-Violent Communication and Collaborative Problem Solving, and always appreciate living with folks who try to be both straightforward and kind. I am tidy in communal areas, and I want to live in a space where communal areas are generally tidy. I tend to do well living with folks who are past their first Saturn Return. I would like to live in a smoke-free house (including weed) (no judgement). I aim to live with wholesome, caring people who think about justice more than they think about, say, Netflix or sportsball. I am open to all kinds of living arrangements, except sharing a bedroom. I only own one car-load of things, so I would be over the moon about a furnished room, but it's not a necessity.

If you would like to meet me, I will be in town until December 24th, and then I will return around the 10-14 of January. Please send me an email at tojessbrown@gmail.com! Thanks much!

Warmly,
Jess Brown

Hi, everyone,

In other words, you would not just be churning out websites or putting out fires, so to speak.

Required skills are as follows:
* PHP, including at least one framework
* JavaScript, esp. jQuery
* MySQL
* Experience with one or more APIs

Pay is competitive and hours are flexible, and you would be working at a great coworking space with free coffee/tea, video games, putting green, comfy couches and other amenities.

Please email me your resume at tim@linchpin.software if you're interested.

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] How to remove yourself from any listserv--a very quick and easy primer

Hello all,

In an attempt to cut down on extraneous emails coming into everyone's email inboxes, here is a quick primer on how to subscribe and unsubscribe from a listserv:  All you have to do is scroll down to the bottom of a listserv message and instructions will be there.  This has been the case with every listserv I have been on since listservs first became common in 90s.

If you have trouble, please feel free to email me and I'll try to help, even though I'm not an administrator for this particular one.

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Women's March January 20, 21, 22

Dear friends.  I would like to offer space in my house for Women's March attendees next month.  Unfortunately, I don't have enough pillows, bedpads/air mattresses, sheets/pillowcases, blankets or sleeping bags.

May I ask if any of you can loan some of your bedding for 4-5 days?  I'll wash it afterward and return it to you clean and neatly folded.  Please let me know by emailing me at stephentjarrett at gmail dot com.

I thank you and the travelers thank you.

Stephen

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Hosting list: DC Housing for Women's March (Jan 20, 21, 22) - Invitation to edit

Jocelyn Lehrer has invited you to edit the following spreadsheet:
Sender's profile photoHi all!

This is a hosting spreadsheet for those of you who might be able/willing to provide housing for San Francisco travelers coming to DC for the Women's March on Jan 21. Please sign up if you're interested! Once the sheet has at least 40 homes on it, I'll open it for travelers to sign up. The travelers are coming mostly from the San Francisco Bay Area, and are friends, friends of friends, burning man goers, and others. The spreadsheet has an area for you to list your contact info, so travelers can contact you to express interest in staying with you. Please be in touch with interested travelers to ensure you're comfortable with hosting them. Once your home is full, please indicate this, or remove your row from the spreadsheet. To maximize space, consider inviting travelers to bring sleeping bags and mats to sleep on floors, etc!

Thanks in advance - I hope we're able to host hundreds of activists! :)
