Re: [Downtown Dharma Listserve] Group in Brookland/NE?

Hi,

You all may be interested in creating a KM group. Here's the info http://imcw.org/Programs/Spiritual-Friends-KM

I don't think there's a huge difference between the KM vs a Sangha like Downtown Dharma.

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Room available in peaceful NW DC home

(this is a second and final message about a room for rent. I don't have administrative access to the listserv so I apologize to anyone who prefers not to receive these emails!)

Good afternoon!

A room or two will be opening up in my lovely group home in June (possibly in May) that I think may be a good fit for someone on this dharma-conscious listserv. Please email me if you are interested or have any questions, and tell us a little bit about yourself and what you're looking for. Thank you!

Kate Stewart

$608 Room(s) Available in Large Group House  (NW DC - Chevy Chase)

Available starting June 1: Several sunny second-floor rooms will be available in the next several months in a very large group house in upper-NW DC (see attached pictures of one of the rooms).

This is a large house with a cultivated community feel. We are a relaxed group of four women, plus one married couple, in our 20s and 30s, all comfortable pitching in with weekly chores and sharing groceries. We all have our own lives and move in our own circles, but we try to get together every month or so for a meal, games night, movie, or just a house meeting.

The house is a beautiful, early 1900's home with high-beamed ceilings, wooden floors, two living rooms, study, sunroom, screened porch, guest room, and extra basement space for storage. We share a fully equipped kitchen, washer/dryer, wireless internet, and cable television. The house has a small front yard and a back yard large enough for gardening & BBQs (with grill and large picnic table).

We are located 4-5 blocks from the public library, Avalon movie theater, Politics and Prose bookstore, Comet Ping Pong, a grocery store, and plenty of other bars, shops, and restaurants. There's also gas stations, dry cleaning, pharmacies, etc. nearby.

Location: Near Connecticut Ave/ Military Ave. A bus stop is one block away, serving L1/ L2 bus routes to Woodly Park/Dupont Circle/Farragut Square. It's 15 min walk to Friendship Heights, 20 min to Van Ness or Tenleytown Metros and about 2 miles to American University. We have street parking and a parking spot available in our driveway (Zone 3).

One-year lease minimum, $608 per month, plus 1/6 share of the utilities ($150-250/mo). Utilities includes all the usual, plus shared vegetarian groceries/ seasonal CSA deliveries of locally grown organic vegetables (delicious!). You do not have to be vegetarian to live in the house. Housemate must be responsible and clean. No smoking, drugs or pets. Security deposit + first month's rent/utilities required upon move in.

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] In search of restaurant/caterer...

Hi dharma folks,

The DC nonprofit Minds (Mindfulness in DC Schools) is hosting a small fundraising dinner in mid-May and we are looking for local restaurants or caterers who might be willing to provide food either for free or at a discounted rate. If you have any connections or ideas, please shoot them my way! The meal will be for about 15-20 people.

Thanks!

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Special Earth Day Screening of Planetary at AFI Silver

Hi all,

Happy Earth Day!  If you're still looking for a way to celebrate, consider coming to Silver Spring for the theatrical release of Planetary. This feature-length film is a beautiful meditation on our interconnectedness with each other and the web of life on Earth. The film features some of the greatest mindfulness and wisdom teachers of our time and was created by 3 Dharma practitioners, who know a thing or two about movie-making.

There will be a short panel discussion afterwards with 2 impressive people (US Congressman Tim Ryan who has written a great book called Mindful Nation; and Gary Knell the CEO of National Geographic) and the other guy they found to fill out the panel.

Whatever you're doing today, take a moment to enjoy the gorgeous weather and rest in the truth that you are are part of something much bigger and wonderfully alive.

Hope to see you there!

With metta,

Lou

Special Earth Day Screening

WHEN: April 22, 7:00 p.m.

WHERE: AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center, 8633 Colesville Rd., Silver Spring, Md.

Presented with World Wildlife Fund
(UK, 2015, 85 min.)

A stunning visual portrait of our planet, this cross-continental cinematic journey explores our cosmic origins and our future as a species. A poetic and humbling reminder that it's time to shift our perspective, the film asks us to rethink who we really are, to reconsider our relationship with ourselves, each other and the world around us. In a stunning visual exploration, the film interweaves imagery from NASA Apollo missions with visions of the Milky Way, Buddhist monasteries in the Himalayas, and the cacophonous sounds of downtown Tokyo and Manhattan. Intimate interviews with renowned experts include astronauts Ron Garan and Mae Jemison (the first African American woman in space), celebrated environmentalist Bill McKibben, National Book Award winner Barry Lopez, anthropologist Wade Davis, National Geographic Explorer Elizabeth Lindsey, and Head of the Tibetan Buddhist Kagyu school, the 17th Karmapa. They shed new light on the ways our worldview is profoundly affecting life on our planet. Directed by Guy Reid. Written and edited by Steve Watts Kennedy. Produced by Christoph Ferstad, Guy Reid and Steve Watts Kennedy. Executive Producers: Paul Hawken and Stephen Apkon.

Panel discussion with Gary Knell, President and CEO, National Geographic Society; Lou Leonard, Vice President, Climate Change, World Wildlife Fund; and U.S. Congressman Tim Ryan (D-Ohio) follows screening.

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Looking for a 5th roommate~

Hello all,

We have found a beautiful 5 bedroom, 3 bath house in Mt Pleasant and are looking for one more person to join the lease for an early June move-in. The room would be either $1000 or $1175 depending on the room. Could that be you or someone you know?

We're three women, one man and two cats excited about starting a creative home base. We're laid-back, social and looking to build a home that's communicative and supportive. We work in international development and environmental engineering, have lived in a number of countries, and are into nature, climbing, yoga, sci-fi, environmental justice, cooking, porch beers, community organizing, literature, and learning.

The House: gorgeous and warm. The kitchen is the heart of the house (and our minds and stomachs. We like food, oh yes we do) and overlooks a porch, big backyard, and quiet alleyway with a glimmer of Rock Creek Park. We're really looking forward to living with each other and want someone who feels the same. We'll be hanging out, cooking dinners together a couple times a month, drinking beers on the porch, digging into garden and house projects, having good folk over for chill gatherings (and the occasional ruckus night for Taboo/Settlers of Catan/etc) and sharing chores. We get that everyone (us included) has active and independent lives -- and that we all need peaceful down time. Balance. Is. Good.

If this sounds like the type of situation you're looking to call home, give us a holler. We welcome individuals of any ethnicity, gender identity/expression, and sexual orientation as housemates.

Re: [Downtown Dharma Listserve] Group in Brookland/NE?

Hi guys,  I don't think there are any IMCW sitting groups that meet in the NE of the DC area.  I recently moved to Mount Rainier and I'd also be interested in having a sitting group in the area.  Perhaps we can get something started ....

Is there a calendar of anything for existing sits/reading groups etc.. for the group?

Or a Facebook page for events? I lose track of the emails.

Hi all,

I've been to the Sunday night group at Church of the Holy City a couple times, but recently moved from Mt Pleasant to a neighborhood called Langdon (just south of Brookland, near 14th and Rhode Island NE). Does anyone on this list know of a sitting group that's more conveniently located to that area?

Thanks!
