It's a New Beginning for MOLC Clients...Your Year-End Donation Can Help Others

 Mission of Love Charities
Helping People...Changing Lives

Dear Friend and Supporter:

Some of the participants in MOLC's Fall 2013 LSWR class.
Even though it's the end of the year, it is a new beginning for MOLC clients finishing up the Fall 2013 MOLC Life Skills/Work Readiness (LSWR) program.

MOLC's LSWR program class recruits, enrolls and provides essential skills to help the unemployed and underemployed obtain and maintain employment. During a 90-day period, LSWR participants receive customer service, employability, job search, and resume-writing training.
They also learn personal financial management, how to dress for work, and how to conduct themselves in a job interview. Upon completion, all participants receive a job offer from Giant or other employer.

A 2012 LSWR program graduate—who came to MOLC with no money, no job, and little hope—now works a 40-hour week at Giant Food. Here is what he told this year's LSWR participants:
“Whatever you do, you need to stick with this class. You need to come to class every day, participate, and learn what you need to do to help yourself. I don’t know what I would have done without the Mission.”
The LSRW program is just one way that MOLC is helping people and changing lives. MOLC also provides needy citizens in the Washington metropolitan area with free clothing, furniture and other household amenities under the Basic Needs Program. Under the Seniors Network Program, MOLC provides computer training and other services to senior citizens, which enables them to stay independent and knowledgeable in an increasingly technological world.

Please consider a year-end, tax-deductible donation to MOLC to benefit our programs and services that help our neighbors in need in the Washington metropolitan area.

To learn more about MOLC programs and services, click here to read our Annual Report.

Click here to make a tax-deductible donation, or mail your check (dated no later than December 31, 2013 for a deduction on your 2013 tax return) made payable to MOLC, to 6180 Old Central Avenue, Capitol Heights, MD 20743.

We wish you a Happy New Year, and we thank you for your support!

Please also remember to bring your gently used clothing, shoes, furniture, bedding and other household items to the MOLC warehouse
for a deduction on your 2013 tax return:
Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2013: 9am–Noon

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] message from Mary Aubry to All Souls sangha

Dear all,
I wanted to share a message from Mary Aubry, whom many of you know as one of our dear teachers at All Souls over the past year plus.....  Mary, on behalf of the sangha, let me say many thanks for your teachings and sharing with our community. May you have a joyful new year!

"In November, I taught my last regularly-scheduled meditation class at All Souls.  In addition to working a full-time job, I have been teaching meditation classes at three locations in the DC area for the past several years, including at All Souls.  This past summer I decided to limit my teaching to one location.  I chose the location that is closest to my home, which is at St. Mark's church on Capitol Hill.  I agreed to finish my teaching commitment at All Souls through the Fall, which is now completed.   I will miss everyone and hope to see you at other IMCW classes or events in the future.  In the meantime, please feel free to contact me at mary.aubry@gmail.com.  I would love to hear from you!   I wish the sangha great happiness.

With much respect and metta to all,
Mary Aubry

[dcphp-dev] php[tek] Call for Papers open

Just a reminder that the php[tek] call for papers is open.

If you've never submitted before, we have guidelines here:

And despite what it's called, it's not about academic papers; it's about a one-or-two-paragraph proposal of a talk you'd like to give. However, your odds of acceptance will increase greatly if you give two or more proposals (we explain in the CfP).

Thanks, and happy submitting,

If you count SQL and MySQL as one, you reduce the requirements list of "know the following" technologies to 13.  Maybe I am missing something, but I would say a year's experience in each would constitute a "junior" level.  JavaScript and AJAX could be consolidated and called jQuery.  A year using Dreamweaver would probably poison the soul, so we can take that out.  Distill it down a little more and you get a requirement for programming skills in PHP (with SQL), Ruby-on-Rails, C#, JQuery and some other stuff.  I'm guessing that WordPress experience could range from "I can set up a blog" to "I'm Aaron Brazell" so we don't really understand what's needed there.  There is XML but not JSON in the list - a curious omission.  DotNetNuke isn't even called that any more (thank goodness).  And if you got your year's experience in PHP six years ago (given a year for junior experience in each technology) you've probably already forgotten a lot of it and you're not up-to-speed on the object-oriented parts.  I don't think even Santa can find someone who can demonstrate proficiency across this range.  http://norvig.com/21-days.html

Maybe a better way to attract an employee would be to describe the work and ask how to solve problems.  As it's described here, anyone who is not a catcher-violinist-linebacker-surgeon would be put off.

Re: [dcphp-dev] [job] Junior-Mid Level Web Developer

Mehmet, that would be accurate. :)

I just joined as a UX/IA three weeks ago and I really like it. I think there would be a lot of room for someone to grow OR thrive if they liked the kind of work they see on our site. More than most companies I've worked for in the last 13ish years, the leadership here seems to be carefully minding their culture and is interested in finding people who are a good fit and who value the same things they do. I do not get the impression that they say that as lip service either: I know y'all have heard that before. ;)

I would also say that if you are looking to make a move but you feel this doesn't match you exactly but you like the work you see, then please float your resume to us.

Thanks for looking! Hope to see y'all at the next event!

p.s. I am not a recruiter. Don't boot me. I just like the company. :)
