[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Tonight at the Sangha! NVC with Kristen Wall

Sorry this email is going out so late -- here's a description of tonight's event. Up to date info can "always" be found at https://www.downtowndharmadc.org/:

The first step in dealing with feelings is to recognize each feeling as it arises. The agent that does this is mindfulness. In the case of fear, for example, you bring out your mindfulness, look at your fear, and recognize it as fear. You know that fear springs from yourself and that mindfulness also springs from yourself. They are both in you, not fighting, but one taking care of the other. — Thich Nhat Hanh, Peace Is Every Step

Downtown Dharma member Kristen Wall will lead an awareness practice with Nonviolent Communication (NVC).  NVC gives us a simple language to identify life as it is lived in the present moment. By learning to identify and name not only our feelings, but our needs and values as they arise in the moment, we can learn to express ourselves in ways that are more likely to foster connection, understanding, and mutuality. NVC can also give us a more meaningful, compassionate, and effective understanding of our own and others' nature and behavior.

As an awareness practice, NVC takes us out of our heads and into our bodies, enabling us to connect with what is truly alive in ourselves and others. It can support a meditation practice by facilitating insight and freedom from grasping as we learn to understand the deeper reasons for our clinging.   As we deepen a compassionate understanding of ourselves and others, we learn to extend nonjudgmental attention, find each others' common humanity, and express what matters most.

This session will be a guided awareness practice incorporating meditative communication, small group work, and opportunities to connect as a sangha. We will practice sitting compassionately with our feelings, bringing the transformative presence of mindfulness, and learning a new vocabulary for our inner life to transform our emotions and bring our conscious attention to the present moment.

Nonviolent Communication, also known as Compassionate Communication, was developed by Marshall Rosenberg, PhD.  NVC training opportunities can be found at www.cnvc.org

Kristen has meditated with NVC since 2006 and Our live, in-person weekly meditation.

If you'd like to join remotely, join us here on zoom. For more info, check out our website, has led NVC workshops for graduate students, prison inmates, and religious congregations.

Hi dear sangha,

As Nick hinted last month, members of our friendly sangha will connect on Sunday, July 16, from 10am-2pm, to dream up how we want to continue strengthening our community. Together we'll meditate (obviously!). And do things like:

-- Sketching out a calendar of programming and social events to connect us all
-- Envisioning what a community-led weekend retreat could look like in Fall 2023
-- Creating a shared mission and vision for Downtown Dharma

Whether you're new to our sangha, or have been coming for years, we hope you'll join! Nick and I are happy to host at our place in Mt. Pleasant (1613 Harvard St NW, #202). You can also participate by Zoom (link here).

For those in person, expect a homemade Thai red curry (vegetarian) for a community lunch. You're welcome to bring something else to share, or simply come as you are.

Please RSVP here, so we know how many chairs to pull out of our storage closet. :)

Warmly,
Vince

Dear fellow sangha members

You may recall that earlier in the year we conducted a survey to gather views on ways to create more community, including through better use of technology.

I'm happy to share the results. In summary:

  • People greatly appreciate the variety and quality of our teachers.
  • People value the sense of community that already exists in our sangha - and crave even more opportunities to connect and socialize.
  • An improved microphone and screen setup would help people online connect with those in the studio on Sunday nights.

The teachers and volunteers met a few weeks back to discuss the survey results and brainstorm ways to help the community flourish even more. Below are two lists of actions we came up with - organized into those that we as a sangha can do right away, and those that could do with a bit more discussion. We agreed to meet again to discuss the second list and will invite everyone from the sangha to attend.

The main message we'd like to share is that this is a community-led sangha – we all have the opportunity to shape the way the Downtown Dharma works. So if you have any ideas – or just general feedback - please feel free to share with the group and look out for an invitation in the next month or so for the next meeting.

May we all be well.

Nick

·     Develop a very short spiel on what DD is, and the different ways folks can engage with the sangha (e.g. it's community-led, with email listserv and FB page, reading group, etc…)

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Tonight's community sit

Hi all,

We're meeting today at our regular time and place (7pm, 1910 14th St. NW). This week's session is a community-led sit- you can expect a roughly 25/30-minute sit and followed by a bit of discussion. If folks want to grab food afterwards,  that's an option too.

Happy Sunday!
