[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Sunday at the Potter’s House

Dear friends,

We will be meeting this Sunday evening from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm in the Community Room at the Potter's House (1658 Columbia Rd, NW) to meditate and connect as a community.

This week we will continue our exploration of restlessness and remorse, looking at the relationship between our formal meditation practice and the other parts of our lives.

Chairs are available. If you'd like to bring your own sitting gear, please do. And if you'd like to help set up, please arrive ten minutes early. This meeting space is wheelchair accessible.

Hope to see you then,

Devin

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] [DHARMA HOUSING] Beautiful 2 bed/1 bath fully furnished apt 1 block from Potter's House - mid August, $2950

Dear All,

Please pardon the post that's not directly teaching or practice related (except that everything is teaching us :). I'm planning to head off on a multi-month retreat in the second half of August and not return to DC for a year or two. My apartment just one block from Potter's House has hosted a few Buddha Brunches, days of practice, home retreats, and a couple of iterations of sitting groups through the years. I'd love for it to stay in the sangha community and hope someone from this sangha may be looking for housing.

The unit features vaulted ceilings, hard wood floors, spacious living room, large formal dining room, big kitchen, and a private balcony. It faces an interior courtyard and there's not back street or alleyway, so it's very quiet nearly all the time. The building also has free laundry and a shared roof deck with monument/cathedral views.

It's perfect for two people, or a couple. I even lived with a couple for about 2 years. If you are interested but would need a roommate, there's a woman who is very interested but in need of a roommate (and going on her first 10-day retreat next month!).

Full details below.

With gratitude and Metta,
Paul

DHARMA HOME - 1 BLOCK FROM POTTER'S HOUSE SANGHA
Beautiful 1300 sf, 2 bedroom, 1 bath fully furnished apartment in Adams Morgan.

Price (2 bed/1 bath, fully furnished): $2950/month + utilities
Utilities: Heat and water included. Gas is usually less than $10 month, electricity averages between $25-$30/month (August and sometimes July can get as high as $45 if using A/C)
Internet: Available ISPs are Verizon FiOS, RCN cable, and Comcast
Available: After 15 August 2018
Lease:  Looking for long term. 1 year preferred.
Inquiries:  please send an email to AdMoPalaceDC@gmail.com

Amenities:
* Fully outfitted kitchen
*Free Laundry in-building
*Secure bike parking in building
* Project room in the basement with
*Rooftop deck – I often take a morning walking practice up there.
-- All new furniture and sun shading.
-- Incredible views from the top of the hill, overlooking the entire city with views of all the monuments, National Cathedral, Catholic University's clock tower and dome, and the wondrous sky and rapturous universe above.
Work/project room with power tools (miter saws, band saw, routers, sanders, etc)
Cloistered courtyard with mulberry tree and some gardening space

Features of the Apartment:
*Approximately 1300 square feet
*11 foot Cathedral ceilings, some ceiling beams, crown molding
*Heart of pine hardwood floors throughout
*Large living room
*Very large dining room with built-in cabinets (leaded glass doors)
*Fully-outfitted kitchen - well, okay, there's not yet a dutch oven or sous-vide, but just about anything else you could want for cooking or baking is already waiting for you to use and enjoy.
*Solid hardwood doors
*Very quiet - unit is on the back side of the building, facing trees with NO TRAFFIC. Often it's easy to forget you're in a city
*Balcony garden containers to plant whatever you want (I've always had kitchen herbs, baby greens, tomatoes and basil, and perennial flowers, along with occasional runs of squash, beans, etc).

The Location:
Everything in Adams Morgan is within 4 or 5 blocks:
Restaurants: Michelin-starred Tail Up GoatDonburiAmsterdam Falafel; Zenebech (DC's best Ethiopian!!); and on and on
Coffee!: Sweet ScienceSong Byrd cafe & music house; Potter's House; Philz
Live Music: Black Squirrel; Black Cat; Madam's Organ; Columbia Station; Bossa; etc, etc.
Grocery stores: Harris Teeter; Safeway (40 feet away!); Yes! Organic;  Glen's Garden Market
Mindfulness of Body: There's a municipal pool about 4 blocks away, plus Gyms, Yoga Studios, and more all 1-5 blocks close
Parks/Green Spaces: Rock Creek Park is a very short walk (AMAZING place for hiking [yes, hiking], running, biking - just generally being outdoors), the National Zoo, Meridian Hill Park, and other outdoor spaces are a short walk. Living close to Rock Creek makes it easy to get a little flora-fauna-outdoors fix most days.
Parking: on street with permit (there are plenty of streets w/ no street sweeping!)
Buses: Metrobuses 42, 43, H1 and the Woodley Park-McPherson Square Circulator stop directly in front of the building. Pretty much all the S lines, the H lines, the L1/L2, and the 53, 54 are 2-3 blocks away.
Metro: Red, Yellow, and Green (yup, traffic signal colors) as the Woodley Park and Columbia Heights metro stations are both about 12 minutes by foot, quicker by Circulator bus.

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Kirtan on Friday; Zero-Waste Sangha on Monday - IMCW Center for Mindful Living Calendar

Dear Friends,

I want to point a few events upcoming at IMCW's Center for Mindful Living (CML) that likely are of interest to this sangha (in case you haven't already heard about them).

This Friday (20th July) Rufus Juskus will lead an evening of meditation and Kirtan - sacred chanting and music. All are welcome. Suggested Donation $10-15 (no one turned away).

Next Monday (23rd July) the Zero Waste Sangha will gather for the first time - woohoo! This sangha intends to meet once a month for mindful exploration of ways to reduce single-use plastics, and waste in general, in our lives.
The first gathering will focus on "10 Easy Swaps to Reduce Waste" with lots of show and tell and instructions on how to reduce waste. No registration necessary - just drop by!

CML has so many events these days that it has its own calendar site (though I believe most or all events also are on the IMCW master calendar): https://living-mindfully.org/calendar/

Mindfully yours,
Paul

A famous mistranslation of the Kalama Sutta has it that the Buddha said, "believe nothing, no matter where you read it, or who said it, no matter if I have said it, unless is agrees with your own reason and common sense." This isn't accurate -- what he said was a little more nuanced -- but the sutta's emphasis on skepticism begs the question: Why is doubt a hindrance?

We'll talk about doubt and discouragement, self-belief, and the things we often tell ourselves that aren't helpful, plus I'll share some cool stuff about Mara, the Buddha's shadow self or the devil, if I can remember where to find it. Hi Dharma Friends,

I wanted to let everyone know that I'll be offering a half-day retreat on August 5th from 1pm - 5pm at the Center for Mindful Living in Tenleytown. This four-hour, donation-based, mindfulness meditation retreat will be offered in the natural awareness style, as developed by teachers like Sayadaw U Tejanyia and Carol Wilson. We have practiced this approach recently in some of the Potter's House classes, and this is an opportunity to go a bit deeper. You can sign up here.

Also, I have a new guided meditation on the Insight Timer app that came out today. It's a good one for weekday mornings :)

To minimize clutter, I do not plan to send more personal schedule updates to this list. Going forward, you can my full teaching schedule here, which also includes non-IMCW events. If you'd like email updates as I add new classes and guided meditations you can sign up here

Lots of love,

Devin

Re: [Downtown Dharma Listserve] Meditation under the microscope

It's funny. I was taught that there is no "self" beyond this body/mind. From that perspective, self care consists of eat when I'm hungry and sleep when I'm tired.

When I create a conceptual "self" in addition to, and separate from, this "mind/body self", then this conceptual self creates and seeks concepts that hinder the simple and joyous functioning of this "mind/body self".

I was taught that a big part of my cultivation/practice is to observe which 'self/I" is runnin' the show.

Easier said than done.

Very interesting article.
Meditation is sold as a form of "self care," like massage or journaling or what have you. It's paradoxical!
I've often felt squeamish reading about corporations and schools using "mindfulness " techniques. It sometimes seems like Buddhist teachings with the life blood sucked out of them.

[We] haven't stopped believing in meditation's ability to fuel change but [we are] concerned that the science of meditation is promoting a skewed view: meditation wasn't developed so we could lead less stressful lives or improve our wellbeing. Its primary purpose was more radical – to rupture your idea of who you are; to shake to the core your sense of self so that you realise there is 'nothing there'. But that's not how we see meditation courses promoted in the West. Here, meditation has been revamped as a natural pill that will quieten your mind and make you happier.

Re: [Downtown Dharma Listserve] Meditation under the microscope

Very interesting article.
Meditation is sold as a form of “self care,” like massage or journaling or what have you. It’s paradoxical!
I’ve often felt squeamish reading about corporations and schools using “mindfulness “ techniques. It sometimes seems like Buddhist teachings with the life blood sucked out of them.

[dcphp-dev] Developer Health Survey Results 🎉

Hi DC PHP members,

Back toward the beginning of 2018, I sent out a survey to DC area meetups about developer health and asked people if they would share their thoughts.

My goal was to make a resource website that developers could go to and learn about health issues specifically geared toward them.

After many responses and months of work and research, I'd like to present the results of that survey.

https://fullhealthdeveloper.com/

Full Health Developer is for developers on topics that we care about. The content will be long form, researched, and actionable for any developer wanting to stay physically and mentally healthy.

The first post is on sleep at https://fullhealthdeveloper.com/how-sleep-affects-your-code. I hope you'll check it out!

Anyone who wants to help further can fill out the survey at http://bit.ly/fullhealthdevsurvey.

Your input will shape the kind of content that appear on Full Health Developer in the future. We don't expect to receive any soul gushing, but I can assure you that all responses will be kept in strict confidence.

Regards,

Matt Layman

Python Frederick organizer

P.S. If you could share this survey with your friends or colleagues, that would be amazing!

P.P.S If you want to hear more on this topic live, consider coming to the new Mid-Atlantic Developer Conference (https://www.middevcon.com/) in July. I'll be presenting what I learned there.
