[Downtown Dharma Listserve] This Sunday, Feb 3: Potluck and Sangha-led discussion

Hi Sangha-friends,

Just wanted to remind everyone that this Sunday is our monthly potluck from 6-7:30pm, so bring something savory or sweet to share, and also a reusable plate/utensil so we can reduce waste. Also, this will be a sangha-led discussion and we are seeking for a brave soul to volunteer - generally the session is divided into a 30 silent or guided meditation and discussion on a particular topic (or a podcast could be used)  - it doesn't take much preparation and there are lots of resources that you could use as a supplement.  If you're interested, please email Amy or Danya at amydona@gmail.com or danya.greenfield@gmail.com.

See you on Sunday!
Danya

Washington, DC

The 2012 election was a wake-up call about how quickly the face of America is changing and the political power of our new demographics.  Earlier this week, President Obama shined a spotlight on the plight of struggling American families during his inaugural address to the nation.  A growing chorus of advocates, policymakers, and economists believe that the nation's spiking racial and income inequality puts our economy at risk, and that equity is now an economic imperative in addition to a moral one.

The conversation must now shift to policy: What is the winning policy agenda to grow our nation's economy in a way that works for everyone, including the communities of color who are the emerging majority? What strategies can create good jobs and economic opportunities for those who have been left behind?

Please join PolicyLink and the Service Employees International Union for a half-day convening to explore on-the-ground solutions, policy strategies, and movement building needed for an equitable economy.

Earlier this month, the following event speakers were announced: Angela Glover Blackwell, PolicyLink; Mary Kay Henry, SEIU; Ai-jen Poo, National Domestic Workers Alliance; and William E. Spriggs, AFL-CIO.

We are pleased to announce the addition of:

  • Denise Fairchild, Emerald Cities Collaborative
  • Benjamin Jealous, NAACP
  • Luz Vega-Marquis, Marguerite Casey Foundation

Many people have signed up to attend this event. Reserve your spot today.

Hi Everyone,

As you can probably tell from the email's subject, BAN THE BOX HAS FINALLY PASSED OUT OF THE SENATE CHAMBER!!  I can not express how grateful we are to all of you over the past years as we pushed to move this bill forward.  And, now, for the first time in four (4) years, we can all say that because of our strong advocacy efforts, a statewide initiative to remove the arrest/conviction question from the initial state job application has successfully cleared the Senate chamber.  Congrats to all for all of your hard work!

NEXT STEPS
Now that the bill has cleared the Senate, it must travel to the House chamber where it will return to the House Appropriations Committee.  As you all probably remember, this bill faced numerous obstacles to passage in the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Personnel last year.  This bill has never been able to make it out of the House Appropriations Personnel Subcommittee to the full committee for a vote.  Therefore, it is extremely important that we continue this great momentum and ensure the bill passes out of the House.  Now, more than ever, it is critical that committee members, especially the committee chair Delegate Norman Conway (D - District 38B, Wicomico & Worcester Counties), hear how important it is that this bill passes out of the Appropriations Committee and heads to the House floor.

Please contact committee Chairman Norman Conway as soon as possible by email or by phone at (410) 841-3425 to urge his support and to pass SB 4 out of his committee.
While we are not yet sure when SB 4 will head to the House Appropriations Committee, it is extremely important that we flood the Chairman's office NOW with emails and phone calls of support for this important initiative.  A quick phone call or email goes a long way...

Again, thank you all so much for all of your hard work in helping to pass SB 4 out of the Senate chamber!  As always, I will be sure to keep you all posted on any and all new updates.  Now, let's get to work on passing SB 4 out of the House!

Take care & talk soon,
Caryn
