[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Re: Fall Downtown Dharma Retreat

Hi everyone,

I'm excited about the peer-led retreat we're hosting November 20th and 21st. Here is a draft schedule! You'll notice a couple of comments in the document because a few details are still being hashed out. Thanks to everyone who volunteered to lead a session! The silly theme is "Learning from Delightful Friends" because of the inspiring depth and variety of topics we came up with šŸ˜€. It will be so fun to hear from friends about topics they're interested in! An extra hearty thanks to Nick, Vince, and Harris who have volunteered their homes to host parts of the retreat.

If you're planning on attending either Friday or Saturday could you please email me and either Nick/Vince for Saturday or Harris for Sunday (cc'd here) so that we know how many chairs to set up. Thanks in advance!

Peace,

Luke

If you're interested in participating, could you please fill out the following form and indicate what weekends you're available and if you'd like to host a session? I also included a question about the format you prefer for this retreat (all in person, mixture of Zoom and in person, etc.)

Finally, I would really like some help coordinating this! I  volunteered to coordinate because these have been so fun in the past. But I need help! Once we determine a date the next step will be to build out a schedule of events based on the suggestions people would like to lead. If you'd like to help me please send me an email.

Thank you!

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] This Sunday: Living Life in Costume- Seeing anatta in our lives, a peer-led session

Hello all,

This Sunday I will be leading our Downtown Dharma session as a peer-led session and discussing the concept of anatta, or no-self. As many in the book club know, it's a topic I've been contemplating and trying to understand in my own life recently. Since its Halloween, I will connect the idea to living in costume--or seeing the roles we are playing in our lives. The focus will be on discussing how seeing ourselves through an anatta mindset can help us be mindful of the roles we play, and help lead to greater freedom and compassion.

We will gather this Sunday, Oct. 31, from 7:00-8:30 PM both in person at the Yoga District studio at 1910 14th St. NW and online. Details for attending in person or online are at the bottom of this email. Please register ahead of time at the Yoga District site if you plan to join in person.

Attending In Person

If you would like to come in person, you will need to register with the studio and submit proof of vaccination. You will also need to wear a mask. For everyone's safety and for the viability of this offering, these requirements are not negotiable. You can register through the Yoga District scheduling site, and you can submit proof of vaccination to yogadc@yogadistrict.com or present it in-person at the studio. We ask everyone to register and submit proof of vaccination ahead of time so that we don't have long delays when we all get together.

We also ask that you try to come 10 minutes early – around 6:50. This will give us time to check folks in and acclimate to what is still a new space and process for most of us. Please note that the class is held on the 3rd floor, up two flights of stairs. There are rugs, bolsters and folding chairs for seating. Please also note that we will be staffing these events ourselves so there will be no-one at the desk to admit latecomers. The doors will be closed and locked at 7:10 and no one will be admitted after that.

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Fwd: Autumn Gathering details

Dear Sangha,

This Saturday from 10:30am to 1:00pm a wonderful Dhamma teacher named Ayya Dhammadīpā is hosting an Autumnal Gathering in Alexandria, VA that I wanted to let everyone know about. The event marks the end of the 'Rains Retreat', a period in which monastics do not travel and spend all of their time studying and practicing in order to support the rest of their teaching throughout the year. Ayya has just moved to the Washington, DC area, so the event is also a launch event for Dassanāya, her new Buddhist community.

I will be joining via Zoom for the event because I will be out of town, but there are spaces available to go in-person and enjoy the benefits of her Dharma talk and experiencing the community in person. I imagine there may be some other IMCW folks there! You can register for the event on the link above, which also has the Zoom link. The schedule for the gathering is:
  • 10:30 to 10:40 * welcome and introductions
  • 10:40 to 11:20 * Dharma talk and Q&A
  • 11:20 to 11:50 * guided meditation
  • 11:50 to 12:50 * bring your own bag lunch
  • 12:50 to 1:00  * casual time and clean up
Now is an important time for Dassanāya's fundraising, so I hope you will consider donating to Ayya and her community to support a more abundant DC Dharma landscape.

Wishing everyone a warm and restful week.

Cheers,
Benjamin

Sorry for the additional email. I wanted to clarify that we will plan to host retreat events on both Saturday, November 20 and Sunday, November 21st. If you're able to attend for only one day, or part of a day, that's totally wondey.

Please do let me know if that weekend is no longer suitable for you or if you'd like to donate some house space.

Love,

Luke

Hi all,

Thank you to everyone who replied to the form about planning a short weekend retreat this fall. After reviewing the responses it looks like the weekend of November 20 is the clearest weekend for the majority of folks. I'm sorry that I couldn't find a weekend that worked for everyone. If you originally noted that November 20  was possible for you but you know that it's no longer possible for you, could you please let me know? If a number of people are no longer available on Nov 20 it's possible that we'd switch to an alternate weekend. But for now, please put November 20-21 in your calendar as days we'll host events related to this retreat.

In the coming days I'll reach out to folks who noted that they were interested in hosting a session to see if they would still like to and I'll draft up a preliminary schedule.

I do have one critical question. Would anyone like to donate their home space to host part of this retreat? I would be happy to offer my home for one day or a part of a day, but I think my roommates would prefer it if I didn't use the space for the retreat for the entire weekend. If you would be willing to host a day or a half day of sitting in your living room, please let me know and I am sure the group will be grateful.

Take care, and much love,

Luke

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Fwd: Join a Buddhist + Mindfulness contingent for a major climate action October 12th

Hi all -

Next week is a big week for our earth, DC and our hearts. It is a week of direct action called People vs. Fossil Fuels where folks are calling on Pres. Biden and our government to stop fossil fuel infrastructure projects. The full text of demands that protestors are making can be found here.

On Tuesday morning, there will be a group of interdenominational Buddhists (Shambala, Plum Village, Zen) meeting other people of faith to participate in this direct action together. You can find more details in the email below -- including the COVID protocols (vaccine proof required) and meeting location.

I will be going and spending as much time as I can there on Tuesday, and I'd love for you to join me.

In solidarity,
Benjamin ("BI")

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] This Sunday's Downtown Dharma gathering: a Compassion Practice

Dear Friends,

We will gather this Sunday, October 10,  from 7:00-8:30 PM both in person at the Yoga District Studio at 1910 14th St. NW and online. Details for attending in person or online are at the bottom of this email. Please read them if you plan to attend as there are registration and proof of vaccine requirements for attending in person.

I'll be leading this week's meditation and facilitating discussion around cultivating a sense of shared common humanity. Why might this be helpful? Compassion is one of the four Brahma Viharas or "sublime abodes." Put simply, compassion is our innate capacity to meet suffering with loving-kindness. A practice of recognizing the sameness of self and others can be a stepping stone to widening our circle of compassion beyond our friends and family (and ourselves!) to eventually include all beings. I would be honored if you would come and walk this compassion path with me!

Attending In Person

If you would like to come in person, you will need to register with the studio and submit proof of vaccination. You will also need to wear a mask. For everyone's safety and for the viability of this offering, these requirements are not negotiable. You can register through the yoga district scheduling site or at the studio and you can submit proof of vaccination to yogadc@yogadistrict.com or present it in-person at the studio.

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Dana for Em + more on sexuality & the dharma

Thanks to all who attended this Sunday's class with Em!

Our gatherings are offered freely to create access to all who would like to participate. And if you'd like to support Em's teaching and livelihood, any donation you're able to offer is greatly appreciated! You can do this via Venmo at @Admin-IMCW — please indicate in the note that it's for "Em Morrison, Downtown Dharma, 10/3/21."

For those keen on further exploring how sexuality intersects with the dharma, please check out the wealth of resources that Em has shared with us below. :)

Warmly,
Vince

It was such a gift to be with the sangha last night. I promised to send additional resources and follow up: I humbly offer the following! <3 Em

- via Sebene Selassie, I was introduced recently to this talk from teacher Erin Treat on the Third Precept (of refraining from sexual misconduct) not as it is usually taught from the perspective of monastic life but as an invitation into a vibrant and sensual knowing of this teaching.

- via La Sarmiento, I was introduced in 2016 to this incredible article on sexuality from Eric Kolvig, one of the grandparents of queer dharma. I find his teachings indispensable, and he makes a strong case that meditation practice can make sex more fun.

- Lama Rod Owens is one of the few living teachers pushing us towards awakening in a wholeheartedly radical and loving way. You can listen to a talk of his on this topic here, read this article, or check out his recent book, Love & Rage.

- A teacher I have not yet experienced but has made an impact on many people in this area is Rob Burbea. His teachings are viewed as sort of a path unto themselves, and you are supposed to go in a particular order apparently. Explore more here if you're interested.

Some books on healing and survivorhood:
Healing Sex by Staci Hines (written for women survivors; I think every woman or person who is involved sexually with women could benefit from this book)
The Courage to Heal Workbook by Laura Davis (for men & women survivors)
The Sexual Healing Journey by Wendy Malz (for men & women survivors)

Lastly, I am co-teaching a 5-week series online starting October 17 titled Practicing Freedom in an Unfree World. Register and find out more info here:  https://events.imcw.org/event/?eventId=803
