[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Volunteer with Downtown Dharma at Loaves and Fishes on May 18th

Hi All,

You're invited to volunteer with Downtown Dharma at Loaves and Fishes
on May 18th. We volunteered at Loaves and Fishes in March. It was a
great opportunity to practice generosity and loving-kindness. Hope you
can make it.

We need 8-10 people willing to volunteer. We'll either be helping to
plate food, or serve it to participants, and help put away tables at
the end. Last time, a group of us went to a neighborhood eatery for
lunch afterwards.

Loaves and Fishes is at 1525 Newton Street NW, on the northeast corner
of 16th and Newton Streets NW, in St. Stephen and the Incarnation
church. You will come through the parking lot and around the back of
the church; the first door is the kitchen. Please ask for Denize, our
program manager. Plan on arriving at 11 am and staying until around 2
pm. Please dress comfortably, with closed-toe shoes as this is an
operating kitchen.

If you are interested, contact me, Scott Drewes, at scott.drewes@gmail.com.

With metta,
Scott

[dcphp-dev] [job] Developer needed to replicate Java program functionality to Web (PHP, HTML5, JS)

Hello PHP group,

I was hesitant to post here since this may not be "mostly" PHP required (maybe potentially), but knowing that a PHP developer usually has HTML and JS credentials I feel safe asking the group.

I work at the University of Maryland, College Park and need a developer to reproduce the functionally found in this Java program (http://msi-drup.eng.umd.edu/html/skyline.html) on a more web-friendly platform (i.e. LAMP + JS).  This is strictly a contract position with a 1-2 months time frame.  The approach can be left up to the developer, but needs to be within the current capabilities of the University.

Additionally, there is a phase 2 of this project whose scope can be defined more clearly after completion of phase 1.

If interested or want a more detailed description of the work, please contact me, Ernie Cleveland, ernie.cleveland@gmail.com.

[dcphp-dev] Sean Prunka tonight!

Just remember, Sean is speaking tonight on how to avoid distractions as a developer. Great all-levels talk. I saw it at Tek last year, and I believe he’s been improving it steadily since.

I’ll also have sample print versions of php[architect] and some flyers for php[tek] with a discount code inside if your boss is on the fence.

See you there: 6:30 at Canvas Co-work, who have been really awesome to us and who you should use if you need some downtown coworking or meeting space.

PS: Remember to follow the DCPHP Twitter account: @dcphp

Great to have, but not required:

• Bachelor's degree in computer science or related subject (note: non-degreed geniuses welcome to apply)!
• Ability to communicate effectively with everyone from nontechnical stakeholders to overseas development teams.
• Bring passion, commitment and a positive attitude to work every day.
• Demonstrate an equal willingness to learn, to share and to teach.

Great to have, but not required:

• Front-end skills, particularly experience with optimizing for older browsers.
• Experience with fundraising and the world of associations.
• Experience with server administration (AWS EC2 with Ubuntu).

Does this opportunity resonate with you?

We offer a strong Benefits package, competitive pay and profit sharing. Best: a team environment where character, passion and fun drive excellence, and bureaucracy never slows it down. If this is what you've been looking for, we hope you'll apply!

When applying, please include a message in the body of your email conveying why you'd be a strong candidate for the Lead Developer position, in addition to attaching your resume and examples of your previous web application development experience.

Thank you!
