[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Next weekend (Feb 6-7): free, self-organized meditation retreat

Hi friends,

This past August, a group of sangha members from Downtown Dharma pulled together a free, self-organized retreat weekend. Since then, the weather has grown much colder, and all the major retreat centers remain closed.

As a result, we're organizing another version of this retreat again next weekend - February 6-7. As a member of our beloved sangha, you're warmly invited to join!

We're still working on an agenda, but it will resemble the August weekend (see link below for an example). One of us will share a schedule with the group next week so you can plan ahead. You'll be able to plug into specific sessions based on your availability, or join for the whole thing.

This is all free. And it's 100% volunteer-led. So, if you're open to leading a meditation or mindfulness activity during the weekend, please feel free to raise a hand!

Hope you're safe, peaceful and warm.

Warmly,
Vince

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Sharing an article I just wrote about compassion

Dear DD community,

As some of you know, I teach an 8-week course called Compassion Cultivation Training or CCT. I enjoy it and learn something new each time I teach, but I struggle with allowing myself to be vulnerable. As a poet, I also struggle with "storytelling," with finding personal stories that are appropriate and "instructive" in some way. Anyway, this article, published online last week,  was my attempt to meet some of my challenges: "What is Compassion and How Can It Bring Happiness and Build Resilience."

Thank you for providing me a spiritual home. I look forward to seeing folks next weekend!
Warmly,
Brandel

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] This Tomorrow's Online Sangha at 7 pm: The Fundamentals of a Regular Practice

Greetings Dear Community,

We'll meet online Sunday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 pm to meditate together and then consider teachings in the Dharma wisdom tradition. Zoom details follow below.

While many of us deeply love the Dharma philosophy and teachings, we struggle when it comes to a reliable and enjoyable sitting practice. Yet we know that learning about the Dharma will only get us so far. We yearn to know its truths in our direct experience. Here at the beginning of a new year, this Sunday's session will be devoted to meditation practice itself. We'll get practical and specific about gathering and sustaining attention in a way that nourishes our being and might even lead onward to realize liberation in this very life.

I hope to see you there.

Thank you for your practice!

Kristin

Hi Suzanne (and sangha),

IMC Redwood City has a practice every weekday called Happy Hour at 6 PST / 9 EST. I've only attended sessions with one of the teachers, Nikki Mirghafori, but she usually has a very creative and unconventional approach to metta/heart-centered practices that I personally really love.

Here's a link to the IMC Redwood City calendar; you can find the Happy Hour event description each weekday with the zoom and youtube links.
All the recorded meditations from the past are also available on AudioDharma!

Good luck with this beautiful intention!

With metta,
Clark

Hi Suzanne!

Leigh Brasington did a wonderful public service by compiling 19 translations of the Metta Sutta onto a single webpage.  We use Bhante Gunaratana's translation at the Bhavana Society Forest Monastery where I live at least once a day.  Maybe you could pick a translation which resonates with you and start with that? I do believe that reciting this sutta or something similar every day will make changes in the brain and therefore mind.  Link below:

Dear Sangha,

I made an intention on January 1st to practice metta meditation every day this year, which I am really excited about. Although I have a few guided practices I am using and endless possibilities to scroll through online, I would very much welcome recommendations from others in the sangha. Any favorites that have enriched your practice that you are willing to share?

With much gratitude and, of course, metta,:)

Suzanne

Downtown Dharma Sangha

DATE:  1/3/2020 TIME: 7:00 - 8:30 PM

Location: Online

Zoom ID: https://zoom.us/j/466237117?pwd=cGxHaTJlTVhBdldVSk8weDZuSW5udz09

Facilitators-

  • Travis M. Spencer
  • Devin Maroney
  • Linda Naini
  • Kristen Barker

Our Downtown Dharma Sangha teachers, Devin, Kristin, Linda, and Travis will lead this special gathering, to mark the beginning of the New 2021 Year.

After our regular meditation period, it's been the sangha's tradition to reflect on the Three Refuges of:
  • The Buddha/Awareness
  • Dharma/Truth
  • Sangha/Loving Community
We will conduct a refuge ceremony for those who would like to participate. This annual refuge ceremony can help affirm and remind us of the beautiful and powerful resources of our practice.

If you would like to participate, you are invited to bring an object that will serve as a reminder of this ceremony through the year. This can be a string as we have used in the past or any object you feel called to have as your reminder (e.g., candle, something from nature like a stone, stick, or feather, piece of jewelry, paper/card, picture).
