Hi,

Someone left a bag at Yoga District last night. If you have not retrieved it yet, it's available in the lost and found there.

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] RSVP: Sangha Activity - Celebrate Spring with a Contemplate Haiku Hike

Hello!

To help usher in spring, I'm excited to organize a sangha "mini event" for those interested :)

What: Please join me for a Contemplative Haiku Hike through Rock Creek Park! Participants will learn how haiku poetry relates to mindfulness and Zen Buddhism and receive brief instructions on how to write haiku. We will then take a mindful 2-mile hike, taking breaks to write our own haiku about the nature we observe. (Haiku are short, accessible poems that typically evoke nature and contemplation of the present moment. Find examples of famous haiku here.)

When: Sunday, March 17, Noon-4pm - Join us for an alternative Saint Patrick's Day! (Rain date is April 14, and I will inform RSVP'd participants at least 24 hours in advance if the event will be rescheduled due to inclement weather.)

Where: We will meet at Noon at Saku Saku Flakerie in Cleveland Park for a ~30-minute introduction. Then, we will hike approximately 2.3 miles on Reservation 630 Trail to a cafe in Mount Pleasant. See the tentative route at the bottom of this email.

Who: The event is capped at 12 participants. Please RSVP at this sign-up sheet. Other than the cap, all are welcome--so feel free to sign up a friend! While our pace will be slow and steady, this event is best suited for people who feel comfortable hiking more than 2 miles on park trails that are uneven and have some steep inclines and declines.

How: No experience necessary! We will go over simple instructions on how to write haiku. Pens, paper, and a handout on haiku will be provided. Please bring $$ for drinks or snacks at Saku Saku Flakerie and Dos Gringos Cafe.

Why: While haiku is not a strictly Buddhist form of poetry, haiku and Zen are closely linked historically and thematically. Haiku relies on the senses and contemplation of the present moment, so both new and experienced meditators may enjoy practicing haiku as a way to engage with mindfulness. See additional resources at the bottom of this email for more info.

Questions? Please reply to this email to reach me at lavelle@bu.edu.

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Interested in March book club?

Hi all,

Downtown Dharma typically has a meditation/Buddhist-themed book club and potluck every month. This is a wonderful chance to deepen connections and explore ideas outside the Sunday sits. Recent topics have included psychoanalysis, sense pleasures, capitalism, and romantic relationships. Future topics could be whatever you want!

For a book club to happen:
* Someone needs to volunteer to host a group of ~10 people for a talk and potluck;
* and someone (could be the same or a different person) needs to volunteer to facilitate the group (= choosing reading(s) [could be a book, articles, movie, podcast] and leading a discussion).

If either of these sound like something you'd like to do for March, please reply-all!

With metta,
Ava Morgenstern

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Bringing the Mission to Life

Hello Friends,

I hope this note finds you well! Here's an update on our most recent Sangha meeting about how we'll bring Downtown Dharma's mission to life. (You can read the full mission statement at the end of this email. If you're curious, check out how we crafted the mission here.)

After reflecting on what excited us, sparked curiosity, and gave us pause about the mission, the group brainstormed ideas for how to put the DD mission into practice. Small groups formed to flesh out next steps for 1-3 ideas around Activities + Engagement, Logistics + Communication, and Teaching.

WhatsApp Image 2024-02-18 at 1.56.26 PM (1).jpeg

Activities + Engagement Next Steps

  • Each Sunday a dedicated volunteer will greet people as they arrive at Yoga District to make them feel welcomed; Nick will recruit and onboard sangha members for this new volunteer role

  • Katherine raised her hand to create a mentor network for members who want to connect and grow in all things (from Dharma knowledge to mediation techniques to how to live more mindfully)

  • Plan a Contemplative Art Workshop as an option to gather Sangha members outside of Sunday meetings

  • Document the approach for planning, communicating, and hosting the event as a an informal 'How to' guide for hosting future community events

Logistics + Communication Next Steps

  • We will start quarterly volunteer board meetings to gather those supporting weekly sits to discuss volunteer roles and needs and explore formalizing and expanding roles

    • All teachers and interested sangha members will be invited to each meeting

    • A member of the Activities + Engagement and Teaching groups will attend the first volunteer board meeting to continue the momentum and collaboration

  • We will create a visual for the official Downtown Dharma Mission we can display weekly, and incorporate reading the mission into the introduction or closing of our gatherings

Teaching Next steps

  • Teachers and facilitators will continue to share from their personal experiences and invite discussion around important themes like inclusion and managing isolation

  • Teachers and facilitators will convene a follow-up meeting to discuss how they can coordinate themes and teachings across Sunday nights

WhatsApp Image 2024-02-18 at 1.56.26 PM.jpeg

Mission statements - and the process of creating them - can anchor, strengthen and provide direction for a community. This was our first attempt at using Downtown Dharm's mission to guide our community. We'll regroup mid-year to reflect on the ideas we've tried and ask how else we'd like to use the mission and what else we'd like to focus on in 2024.

Downtown Dharma Mission Statement

We are a meditation community, rooted in Buddhism and open to wisdom from across traditions, offering a safe haven for curious minds and loving hearts in downtown DC. We are community-driven and volunteer-led, supporting each other through life's challenges with kindness and friendship. Modeling a generous, inclusive alternative to intolerance and isolation in our society, we meditate and gather to meet all of our experience with greater wisdom, balance, and love.

Have a great week,
Audrey

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] An invitation to RELAX to-gather @ DD on Sun, Feb 11th

Hello relaxation experts!

Do you feel like we're all too often on the run? Like we can't seem to catch up to, or get ahead of our to do lists? Has doing eclipsed being in our list of life priorities?

Is it possible that we're just running from tension? Running from thoughts which create tension? Running from tension which creates thoughts?

What if we gave ourselves permission to RELAX? Just Relax. What if we mutually agreed, and indeed, declared, this Sunday evening, that RELAXATION is an important aspect of our lives? What if, like our shoes, we left striving at the door, and focused instead on R&R.

To me, friends, this. is. meditation.

Yes, I said it. Meditation is Relaxation, and Relaxation is Meditation. Why didn't someone tell us this years ago?!

How did "the practice" become so goal-oriented? How did it get co-opted into a spiritual version of our society's love affair with 'productivity?'

Let's drop EVERYTHING together, admirable friends, just for an hour. Let's Pause together. Let's Relax together. Let's rest together, and see what happens.

On the heels of Vince's leading us through the first of six Insight Dialogue guidelines, PAUSE, a couple weeks ago, let us together begin a journey of cultivating the second, and my personal favorite, RELAX.

After a short meditation and some sharing of guidance on this important quality and ID guideline, we'll break out into dyads and give each other permission to Pause & RELAX, together.

After all, isn't relaxation our nature & birthright, dear friends?

See you Sunday!
brian :)

My address is 850 Quincy St NW, Apt 621, Washington, DC 20011 (directly above the Petworth metro). [Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] This Sunday with Downtown Dharma: The Most Misunderstood of the Buddha's Teachings

Greetings Dear Sangha,

If you are struggling in your life, if things aren't going as planned, if you can't seem to get it all together, you're not alone... and there's absolutely nothing wrong with you.

According to the Buddha, this is suffering and it's all quite normal. On the other hand, the Buddha's teachings on suffering (translated from the Pali word "Dukkha") can seem like a big downer as they are often misquoted (e.g., "Life is Suffering") and frequently misunderstood as such. Yet there is astounding power in his insights into the causes and remedies of our struggles with life. A true understanding of them is highly relevant to our contemporary experience for they have the power to liberate the heart, delight the mind, and bring a robust steadiness to our work in the world.

This Sunday at Downtown Dharma after practicing meditation together, we'll talk about Dukkha, one of the most powerful of the Buddha's teachings. I hope you can join us!

Time: Sunday, Feb 4, 7:00 - 8:30 PM
In-person: Yoga District, 1910 14th Street NW,  3rd Floor, Washington, DC 20009; Please arrive early as doors will close soon after 7 pm.

With deep appreciation,
Kristin
