[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Partners for online MSBR cours

Good morning, Downtown Dharma friends,

I am  interested in doing an online MBSR course.  I have  friends who've done the online course and felt it to be very worthwhile.  However, I think it would more interesting and meaningful to do it together with a couple of other folks.  If you are interested please let me know!  (Preferably very soon, as I'd like to start within the next week.)  As far as logistics,  I'm thinking it would probably work best is to set aside a time on Sunday afternoons for a few hours to do that week's section.  The course is typically set up to run over 8 weeks.

Here is a link for the course.  This is based on the original version that was developed by Jon Kabat Zinn:

Mindfulness for Daily Living: Discover A Deeper Trust & Wisdom Within You

Mindfulness has become very trendy these days because it is known to have many benefits for our overall health and well-being. Many studies indicate how mindfulness can reduce stress and improve our overall wellness. In this workshop, you will to not only learn tools on how to reduce stress and improve wellness but you will also learn to develop a deeper trust and wisdom within and take mindful awareness “off the cushion” into your daily life. In this workshop, you will learn insights, tools and practices to become more present in life and discover its true value when you engage in “interpersonal” mindfulness or mindful mutuality with others. Mindfulness is not just a solo activity we engage in once in the morning and once at night; it’s a way of being in the world from a deeper place of trust, wisdom and compassion thus transforming the very way we engage with each other on a daily basis.

By completion of workshop, you will learn:

• How to stay grounded and present in mindful, effortless awareness.
• How to cultivate and embody an attitude of openness, trust and curiosity with experience in meditation both on the cushion of off the cushion.
• How to tame the mind with love and compassion.
• How to learn the value of inquiry and interpersonal mindful meditation-mindful mutuality and the possibilities this creates for how we can BE in the world.

Come and join Bennett in discovering the power of mindful awareness in mutual openness, curiosity, trust, and compassion, and see what is possible on how we can bring this level of awareness to our daily lives together.

Open to all levels of experience.

MOLC Celebrates Seven Who Completed Workforce Development/Life Skills Program

"I matter" was the theme of the May 13, 2016 MOLC Workforce Development/Life Skills graduation program, which celebrated the accomplishments of seven participants.

Though not in attendance, the remarks of MOLC Founder and Chairman Dr. Douglas E. Edwards were read by Francine Flood:

"[A]s you write your history, make certain that it reflects the most important aspects of your life – the portions that you want to be remembered for, and then those who follow in your footsteps will be able to climb even higher as they journey through this world. . . . Soar to the heights of an eagle. . . high above the clouds; land softly as a dove, and never be afraid of failure. It's only an opportunity to gain the strength you need to climb over the next obstacle that comes your way. . . ."

Keynote speaker Kenneth C. Williams, assistant to the Prince George's County Council administrator, thanked the participants for their "diligence, perseverance and energy you brought to the many weeks you participated in this program. You're leaving knowing how you have changed others' lives, not just your own." Williams discussed the richness of relationships – both vertical and horizontal, stating that while "I matter," individuality becomes more powerful when people align themselves with others.  "With the collectiveness of our strength [and the development of friendships, [we] become a family, with one goal in mind, and that is to keep moving forward."

In closing, Williams quoted Dr. Martin Luther King, who said, "A man can't ride you unless your back is bent." Williams said, "Stay straight, and although life has it's challenges, keep moving forward."

The program also included a dance presentation by participant Charde Lawrence, a poem written by participant and mistress of ceremonies Cheila Thomas, and reflections from former program participants.

At the end of the event, Maryrose Lyles got a surprise: Her students presented her with a home-made gift in appreciation for what they have learned in the program.

Graduates of the program are as follows:

Raphael Coates
Yolanda Joyner
Charde Lawrence
Pearl Maynard
Christina Sellers
Cheila Thomas
Williams Watts
