[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Potter's House This Week

Hi friends,

We will be meeting this Sunday from 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM in the Community Room at the Potter's House Cafe (1658 Columbia Rd., NW Washington) to explore the dharma together, and enjoy each other's company. We will provide chairs and a few cushions but please feel free to bring your own. The space is wheelchair accessible.

This week kicks off our exploration of the five aggregates. Though this may sound complicated and esoteric, it's actually meant to simplify our understanding of experience so that the mind can get untangled. The category we will be looking at this week is form, also known as the material world (cue Madonna). I love this topic and the possibilities that it points to.

ALSO, there is a picnic before the sitting at Meridian Hill Park from 2:30 - 5:30. There will be food, games and good people. Come join!

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Soteria Classes

Hi all, I thought some of you might be interested in this fall's courses at Soteria Community School (just down the street from Potter's House). They're six weeks long, 1 night a week, and on some very interesting topics, including world meditative and contemplative practices. More details below. DESCRIPTION

Soteria Fall 2018 Semester Courses:

Soteria Community School, a program of The Festival Center, provides political and theological education by drawing on the wisdom of community members. This semester we are offering four classes, each running for 6 weeks. Each class costs $25. All classes are held at The Festival Center in Adams Morgan on either Tuesday or Wednesday evening from 7pm to 8:30pm (note: each ticket, regardless of the class, will say "Tuesday"). We can't wait to partner and learn with you!

Title: Telling Our Stories: Learning and Sharing DC Oral History

Instructor: Katie Davis, journalist, broadcaster and oral historian. Her work has aired on NPR, This American Life. She recently finished an indepth project collecting oral history interviews in Anacostia.

Dates: Tuesdays from 7pm - 8:30pm, Nov. 6th - Dec. 11th

Telling stories is central to being human; it's a powerful tool to connect with our neighbors. In a community where many people do not know each other, oral history will open a way to connecting to each other,learning about our histories, and even identifying ongoing conflict.

We will dig into the history of Adams Morgan, DC, including the Church of the Savoir and other groups that contributed to the neighborhood as we know it. Over the course of the class, we will learn to conduct an oral history interview and will invite at least one person from the neighborhood to come and tell their story. Through the art of deep listening and knowing when to interject, we will learn how to use audio equipment and prepare for an interview.


Title: Place in the Imaginary: Space and Time in the Writing Process

Instructor: Kangsen Wakai, MFA, Author and Poet

Dates: Tuesdays from 7pm - 8:30pm, Nov. 6th - Dec. 11th

This course aims to explore how place can inflect the writing process. Participants will engage with poetry and nonfiction that highlight ways in which actual or figurative location can liven ideas and experiences during the creative process. Weekly discussions and workshops will provide tools to help the writer situate themselves/ideas/experiences in space and time.

This workshop is accessible for all writers, including beginners. This is a creative writing course for those interested in flash fiction and non-fiction, poetry, and memoir. Participants will also find a supportive space to give and gain feedback about the piece they'll develop during the course.


Title: Decolonizing Dominant Christian Theology and Practice 

Instructor: AnaYelsi Velasco-Sanchez, Venezuelan IndoLatinx mujerista who has worked as a faith-based organizer. She is a consultant, speaker, writer, and visual artist. Dates: Wednesdays from 7pm - 8:30pm, Nov. 7th - Dec. 12th

How do we bring the principles of anti-racism and anti-oppression into the church? We will explore the systemic, cultural, and historical forces that produce and sustain dominant Christian theology and practice in the U.S. We will also explore the role of scripture, language, power, and storytelling in working for justice, lamenting, and healing. Special attention will be paid to race, colonialism, and gender/sexuality.


Title: Sacred Gathering: Contemplative and Meditative Practices in Community

Instructor: Anna Franklin, Organizer, teacher, and consultant. Anna strives to create a warm and welcoming community while drawing upon the rich and universal spirituality that yoga, meditation, and contemplative practices offer. She is currently studying with Richard Rohr, Barbara Holmes, and other wisdom teachers at the Living School at the Center for Action and Contemplation.

Dates: Wednesdays from 7pm - 8:30pm, Nov. 7th - Dec. 12th

Based on the model of Satsang, this will be a safe and supportive space in which to discuss key but often difficult life topics such as desire, suffering, solidarity, nonviolence, and community. We will draw on a multiple religious and philosophical traditions (e.g. Christian, Vedic, Sikh, Sufi, Buddhist). Led by the instructor, we will also explore contemplative and meditative practices including yogic chanting, breath exercises, meditations, and prayer. Students will gain insight and tools for navigating the difficult and murky areas their lives.

[dcphp-dev] [job] Freelance PHP developer needed

I have a small site that is older and is headed for a redesign. I want to use the current online course/enrollment module and just update it with a few minor changes. It was custom-coded quite a while back and should also be reviewed/tested for functioning with a newer version of PHP. It is a simple sign up system with no ecommerce element other than a link to PayPal. I am also interested to see if I could move this all to CSS Grid, so someone familiar with that as well would be a plus. 

I need to get an estimate submitted to the client ASAP. Please contact me if interested in reviewing this project and provide a quick summary of your background and desired hourly rate.

I apologize for the delay in sending this email. Yes, we are meeting tonight. I look forward to being with those of you who trundle over in the rain. 

We will meet 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm in the Community Room at the Potter's House (1658 Columbia Rd, NW). We will take some time to meditate together, followed by discussion and practice around the gifts of the fall season.

Chairs are available. If you would like to bring your own sitting gear, please do. If you would like to help set up, please arrive ten minutes early. This meeting space is wheelchair accessible.

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Sunday at the Potter's House

Hi friends,

We will be meeting this Sunday from 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM at the Potters House for meditation and communion. The Potter's House Cafe is located at 1658 Columbia Rd. NW and is wheelchair accessible.

This week was scheduled as a peer-led class, but we are without a peer volunteer so I plan to facilitate an exploration of the Buddhist teachings on intention. I love this topic. Even calling it a topic seems limiting... within our understanding of intention we can find the beautiful simplicity of the dharma and complex math of the cosmos.

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Cultivating True Love class and other events with Kaira Jewel this fall

Dear friends, I hope you are each well and happy.

I wanted to let you know that after living nearly 3 years in DC I am moving to Sri Lanka at the end of October. It has been a wonderful time in DC and I am so grateful for the opportunity to have practiced the Dharma with you.

I will be teaching a number of classes and events this fall that I wanted to let you know about. You are welcome to forward to those who may be interested.

In addition to continuing with the Monday night drop-in classes at Seekers Church from 7-8:30pm, I will be offering the Cultivating True Love: Mindfulness and Relationships for a second year, meeting 6 times on Wednesdays from 7-9pm and twice on a Sunday from 4-6pm. Loving Kindness

We do not awaken outside of our relationships to others.

It is through relating to others that we realize the deepest truths about ourselves.  

The path of opening the heart to ourselves and others is the path of developing:  

Loving kindness, Compassion, Joy and Equanimity, Inclusiveness.  


MODULE TWO  

Compassion

"If we have compassion in our hearts, every thought, word and action can generate a miracle" –Thich Nhat Hanh  

We have the tendency to shrink from what is painful, including our own suffering and discomfort.  

This doesn't actually alleviate our pain.  

Compassion, the willingness to be with suffering with kindness, is what gives us the capacity to relieve it.  

It is an essential part of true love.  


MODULE THREE  

Joy   

"Sometimes your joy is the source of your smile, but sometimes your smile can be the source of your joy" – Thich Nhat Hanh  

We can each do something every day to bring joy to ourselves and others.  

This is a key element of true love. With mindfulness we see that while there is much suffering in us and around us that needs our attention, there is also much to celebrate and be grateful for.  

We can deepen our capacity to see the good in life to bring more joy to ourselves and others.  


MODULE FOUR  

Equanimity and Inclusiveness

While this fourth practice of true love is often translated as equanimity, Thich Nhat Hanh also translates it as inclusiveness, which adds a more active interpretation of how to apply it.  

This element of true love is powerful in our personal lives helping us ride the waves of fortune and misfortune.  

It is also an antidote to discrimination, dogmatism and intolerance, which is increasingly breaking down our social fabric.  

It helps us to stay open so we can overcome barriers and biases. Encouraging us to reach out to those who are different from us to heal our separation.

About Kaira Jewel Lingo

Kaira Jewel teaches meditation and mindfulness internationally, with a focus on activists, people of color, artists, educators, families, and youth. She began practicing mindfulness in 1997. An ordained nun of 15 years in Thich Nhat Hanh's Order of Interbeing, she is now based in Washington, D.C., leading retreats in the U.S. and internationally, offering mindfulness programs for educators and youth in schools, as well as individual spiritual mentoring.
