[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Re: Great Radical Race Read

Dear friends,

I've formed a reading circle for the Great Radical Race Read if anyone would like to join - the circle is called DowntownDharmaDC.  If you'd like to join this effort - which includes 5 weeks of reading Radical Dharma and weekly discussion on Wednesday nights at 8:30pm  - please see below.  I indicated Radical Dharma as the book we would read, but based on interest from the group, that could also be changed.
First, you need to register here:  greatradicalraceread.com so that you will receive all GR3 updates.
Then, you can join the team from this webpage:  https://giveto.transformrace.org/fundraiser/2834807

You can also search for the reading circle from this website   https://giveto.transformrace.org/campaign/great-radical-race-read-gr3/c288517

Thanks
Danya

Led by Rev. angel Kyodo williams, GR3 is a fundraiser and an invitation to form reading and (un)learning circles around one of five books that cover significant areas of racial education. Rev. angel has been creating multiracial, spiritually grounded, embodied spaces where people transform their understanding of race, white supremacy, and collective liberation together. People at all entry points of conversation on race are welcome.

READ-ins will focus on the Radical Dharma 5 Framework for Liberation: contemplative approach, embodied practice, liberatory path, prophetic praxis, and collective praxis. This invitation includes:

  • Reading "Radical Dharma: Talking Race, Love, and Liberation"

  • Joining SURJ's circle and coming to an optional book club discussion

  • Joining five weekly Wednesday webinars aka READ-ins with Rev. angel starting July 29th and going through August 26th

  • Donating to and fundraising for the Radical Dharma Movement Project to raise awareness, educate, and organize to transform race as we know it.

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Online this Sunday with Downtown Dharma: Ethics as Essential Nourishment

Greetings Dear Community,

As is our Sangha's pattern during the extended sheltering-at-home period, we'll meet online Sunday evening from 6:00 to 7:30 pm to meditate together and then consider teachings from the Buddhist wisdom tradition.

In honor of the passing on July 17 of the great civil rights leader and contemporary Bodhisattva John Robert Lewis, we will explore the domain of ethics as a source of both well-being and guidance on the awakening path. How can we invoke their power to create safety and counter domination, both internally and externally, while guarding against the hazards of judgment, division, and blame?  How might a practice of attending to ethics help us to develop our natural wisdom, strength and courage?

I hope to see you there. Thank you for your practice!

Kristin

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Reading for this Saturday: How to Meditate

Hi all,

I am attaching the reading for our virtual reading group this Saturday at 5 pm. It is a chapter from Culdasa (John Yates)' book, The Mind Illuminated.

Even for experienced practitioners, it can be interesting to read about how to mediate. This chapter. in particular, makes a distinction between the concepts of attention and awareness (concepts that Devin often uses) that I find clear and helpful.

I'll send out more discussion questions before the meeting, but as you are reading, you might think about whether this description fits with your own practice or how Culadasa's concepts of consciousness and mindfulness shape your view on meditation.

Best,

Kavya

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] spiritual group house forming

Hello fellow dharma practitioners,

Are you interested in forming a relaxed community of spiritual seekers with weekly house dinners and periodic gatherings to practice yoga, meditation, communication, or other contemplative practices? I am living in a large, spacious 5-BR townhouse in Mt. Pleasant with 3 bedrooms available as soon as August 1 and I would love to form a community with others on a spiritual path. I have been practicing meditation, yoga, as well as Nonviolent Communication, and The Work of Byron Katie and would welcome living with other like-minded friends on the path.

About the neighborhood: Mt. Pleasant is a quiet, tree-lined neighborhood right next to Rock Creek Park trails, Columbia Heights, and Adams Morgan.

If you are interested in exploring this as a possibility, please email kwallishome@gmail.com and let's set up a video chat to give you a tour of the house, meet and envision what this could look like!

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] does anyone have experience with unemployment and retreat

Hi,
Has anyone ever taken a break from certifying an unemployment claim to go on retreat (or some other reason) and then restarted it? In DC?

I'm working but my job might end and I'm considering what retreat options I might have over the next year.
Warmly,
Erin

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Dharma reading group now monthly

Hi folks,

In case you've been on your toes waiting for notice about tomorrow's reading group, we've decided to switch our meetings back to monthly from biweekly. The next meeting will be on July 25. We've noticed a drop-off in attendance recently and figure that the Zoom fatigue is real.

I'll send out readings prior to that meeting.

Hope all are well and taking care,

Kavya
