[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Online this Sunday with Downtown Dharma: The Inner Outsider

Greetings Dear Community,

As is our Sangha's pattern during the extended sheltering-at-home period, we'll meet online Sunday evening from 6:00 to 7:30 pm to meditate together and then consider teachings in the Dharma wisdom tradition.

Many of us know well the pain of a contracted sense of self, when, under duress, we head for the hills, go on the attack, numb out, or otherwise desperately scramble for safety. Both strange and familiar, this uncomfortable feeling is most obvious in the context of some form of conflict with a family member, friend, or colleague. How might the Dharma teachings and practices support us in recognizing this specific form of suffering and finding our way back to ease and connection. How might we come to discern and respond to this "inner outsider" on other scales, both the internal relational field as well as the collective/cultural version? And beyond the relief of suffering, what might this phenomena have to teach us about the Dharma itself?

I hope to see you there.

Thank you for your practice!

Kristin

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Book club this Saturday - 5:00pm

Hi Sangha!

This Saturday, we will have book club at 5:00pm. This week, we will be discussing an article about race by rev. angel Kyodo williams: "Your Liberation is on the Line." The intention of this discussion on race is for it to be open-ended and for it to be an ongoing conversation as a sangha that we return to and support each other in discussing.

This week, the book club discussion is a part of the self-organized retreat taking place on Saturday and Sunday. For more information on the retreat taking place, please click here for the schedule

Note: You do not have to sign up for either the retreat or the book club. Simply join the Zoom call at the appropriate time. Also, although the book club discussion is a part of the retreat, you are welcome to join for just the book club discussion if you are unable to attend the retreat. And vice versa! You are encouraged to attend the retreat for however much of it you can make it for.

---------------------
Here are a few guiding questions for our book club discussion:
  • What do you think Rev. Williams means when she says "Learn the stories. Learn your own. We can't know our own personal minds without understanding the conditioning and the fabrication of that mind."? How do you think social conditioning has shaped your worldview? Is there anything recently that you've realized about your own conditioning in the last few months?
  • Was there anything difficult about reading this? What came up for you? When you have conversations or think about race and identity, what thoughts, feelings & emotions come up?
--------------

Looking forward to this weekend. Thanks everyone.

Best,
Benjamin

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Free, self-organized meditation retreat August 15-16

Hi friends,

Wouldn't it be nice to sneak away for a meditation retreat next weekend?

While all the major retreat centers are closed until 2021, you're in luck as a member of our beloved sangha. A group of us are pulling together a free, self-organized retreat weekend on August 15-16, specifically for Downtown Dharma folks. You're warmly invited to join!

Here's the retreat agenda (still a working draft, but as you can see we're getting there):

Your choice: You can spend the entire weekend in retreat, or drop in for specific sessions if you're balancing this with other commitments. No registration required - just click on the Zoom links in the Google Doc. There will be two small, socially distanced gatherings on Saturday 8/16 for those keen on a bit of face-to-face time outdoors.

This is a 100% volunteer-led experiment in community building. THANK YOU to everyone stepping up to make it possible.

Hope you can carve some time out to join next weekend! Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions at all.

Warmly,
Vince and Nick

You can contribute in 3 ways:

1.     Join us on August 31 from 11 am to 2pm for the back to school drive. Masks and social distancing will be required.
