[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Interested to see Beautiful: The Carol King Musical at the Kennedy Center?

Hi All,

Nancy Murphy here. Hope you are having a good weekend.

I am planning to go to see Beautiful: The Carol King Musical at the Kennedy Center and wanted to see if anyone would like to come along?
It is playing at the Kennedy Center Oct 6-25.  Lowest price tickets on weeknights $45.

Here is a link to a review of the play in which the author comments that the actor playing King, does a good job displaying the: "deferential gentleness of its heroine"
http://www.nytimes.com/2014/01/13/theater/beautiful-the-carole-king-musical-at-sondheim-theater.html?_r=0

If anyone would like to join, please let me know and we can pick a date.  I am thinking maybe Thurs 10/15 or 22?

Take good care.

Regards,
Nancy Murphy

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Fwd: Opening in Meditation Group House - Nov 1 / $925 / Mt Pleasant

Hello friends,

I sent a longer version of this notice out in August, so apologies for the repeat-- August vacations ended up making it impossible to interview folks, so we decided to pause and restart in the Fall.

These gorgeous cool nights mean Fall is here! Please see below of you're interested in living in sangha. And please circulate to others who might be interested.

Warmest best wishes,
Megan

> Hey folks,
>
> My yoga and meditation focused group house has an opening.  Feel free to share far and wide.
>
> If you're interested in email updates for our community events, please sign up here: http://goo.gl/forms/34rnVrwhaN
>
>
> About the house and how to apply:
>
> Our newly formed group house in the heart of Mt Pleasant is centered around meditation and yoga (bhakti, asana, pranayama, etc), as well as laughter and good food.  We've come together to deepen our practices (vipassana meditation and yoga strongly represented) by meditating and doing yoga together regularly, and by creating a home environment supportive of reflection, contemplation and insight. We've also come together to create a space for the broader community to deepen in practice, and we plan to open the house for group meditations, yoga, kirtan, satsang, day-long retreats, talks on spiritual philosophy and the dharma, musical events, and the like.
>
> We all came to the house with years of our own individual personal practice and a desire to deepen.  The house grows from that place.  We seek someone who also has an established practice and is interested in deepening their practice in community with others, and in exploring how to integrate practice with daily life in this wild, beautiful, challenging city.
>
> We are 2 women and 2 men in our 30s. At play, we can be found in nature, riding bikes, walking through Mt P, reading, writing, critiquing cinema in our home theater, traveling the world, holding acoustic musical jams, and hosting our friends for dinner.  At work, we can be found doing climate and energy policy, working on renewable energy projects in developing countries, fostering dialogue and capacity building amongst leaders across oceans, and doing social work. We're a fun loving group. The house is full of laughter, as we all have a taste for the hilarious and absurd.
>
> The room will be available November 1, with plenty of flexibility on the move-in dates (as soon as October 1) since we have a spare bedroom that we can use to stage in our new housemate.  Price is $925/month, utilities not included.  The 3 story townhouse has 3.5 full bathrooms, four fireplaces, multiple outdoor terraces, a garden with a maple tree, and a two-car garage that we rent out.  We have set up a "shopkeeper's apartment" on the 2nd and 3rd floors where the bedrooms, kitchen, living room, and balcony are. We've dedicated the ground floor of the house to meditation, yoga, and community. The open bedroom is on the 3rd floor, a bit cozy, and you would share a full bathroom with one other person
>
> To apply
> If you're interested, please let us know about you and what about the house resonates with you. Please send your note to: mt.p.haus@gmail.com

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Daylong Retreat-- Saturday, October 3rd

Daylong Retreat -- Saturday, October 3rd

Are you interested in a day of silence and concentrated meditation practice in the middle of Washington, DC?

If so, join us on Saturday, October 3rd, for a day of alternating sitting and walking practice in Mt Pleasant.

We will be begin at 9:00 am with a 45 minute sitting session, and then alternate throughout the day with periods of sitting and walking.

At 5:00 we will conclude with a blessing of traditional Buddhist chants in Pali, the language of the Buddha's time. The chants will be offered by a community member who has practiced in Thailand for many years.  We invite you to stay after the blessing for dinner, tea and connection with sangha!

Who and Where We Are

We're a group house devoted to meditation and spiritual practice located at 1719 Lamont St NW in Mt. Pleasant.  The entire ground floor of our house is devoted to meditation and yoga.  Our hope is to grow the space as a community sanctuary, offering meditation, yoga and other opportunities for practice.

Practical Matters

- If you'd like to join us, please fill out this brief form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1A5byfXDqA9jQWH5I3hDQh2H3mrjGTBTya82bhDYwD2Q/viewform?usp=send_form

- Please bring your own cushion, mat, or bench for sitting if you would like one… we have a limited number to share.

- We will observe the age old tradition of "noble silence" until 5pm, so prepare yourself to relish in the spaciousness of quietude.

- There will be a one hour lunch break at noon, during which we will also hold silence.  We suggest you bring your own lunch, or feel free to venture into the world to buy lunch on Mt. Pleasant St.

- The day will begin with a brief set of instructions for folks who are new to meditation, and there will be a second brief instruction following lunch.

- As we get closer to the date we will send out a more detailed schedule.

You can only make part of the day?

No problem!  Feel free to join us only for the morning, or for the afternoon, as your schedule permits.  Please observe the notice about maintaining silence suggested above if you need to come and go.  Also feel free to join only for the blessing and gathering if you like.

Hi Sandy,

First of all, thanks for organizing meetups. Meetups have played a huge roll in my programming career and I love the opportunities to meet people and learn new things.

Because I love Users' Groups so much, I'd love to offer your attendees/members a coupon code for the upcoming online conference Angular Remote Conf. The code is "meetup" for 20% off.

The code also works on the group tickets as well if you want to find a sponsor and host the event for your members or if you know companies that may want to host it themselves.

The conference is going to be held September 24-26, 2015 from 12-4:30pm Eastern Time. We have Brad Green (Angular Project Manager), Lukas Ruebbelke (Adventures in Angular Podcast), Kent C. Dodds (Angular Air Podcast), Jafar Hussain (Netflix), and Shai Reznik speaking.

We'll also have Q&A and chat capabilities as well as an online forum where we'll post the sessions immediately after the conference. And, since the conference is online only, there's no travel. Remote attendees are our only priority.

Thanks,
Charles Max Wood
