[Downtown Dharma Listserve] [Downtown Dharma] This Sunday (tomorrow!) Evening at Potter's House: Exploring Attention

Greetings Friends,

This Sunday from 6:00 to 7:30 pm we will gather at Potter's House in the Community Room behind the bookstore/cafe.

As part of opening this new year, I'd like to explore with you a fundamental aspect of our practice which is practice itself. When we sit down to practice, what are we actually supposed to do in our effort to "establish mindfulness"? To be sure, we need inspiration and resolve but also some clarity about how to work with the dynamics of attention. Attending to attention itself can be a fascinating and rewarding exploration. By becoming more clear in our meditative task as well as supportive attitudes, we can remain present with increasing ease and allow our practice, with all of its helpful gifts, to naturally unfold.

The meeting space is wheelchair accessible. Chairs and some meditation cushions will be available, but please feel free to bring your own cushion if you like.

I look forward to practicing with you on Sunday!

Kristin

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Fwd: [livingmindfully] Furlough Resource & Opportunities List from YLMx friends

Hi friends,

This moment can be a great opportunity to reflect on giving and receiving. If you're interested, here's some spiritual food for thought. The website Access to Insight - a great resource for finding texts in the Pali Canon - has compiled some of the Buddha's teachings on generosity. If you scroll down there are some beautiful and pithy teachings.

Also, this is not in the Thervadan/Insight/Vipassana tradition, but it's a personal favorite: Khalil Gibran's "On Giving."

With love,

Devin

Hello friends,
Jonathan Foust's Year of Living Mindfully Sangha (YLMx) is grateful for the opportunity to practice together at the Center.
We recognize that the five week government shutdown has affected Washington, D.C. area communities in many different ways.  We offer this partial list of furlough resources and volunteer opportunities with the hope it is of benefit to you or someone you know, whether directly or indirectly affected. Please use, share and add to the list as a community resource.
With metta,

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] In need of a short-term lease in DC

Dear Sangha,

I apologize for the non-meditation content below, in advance:

I need to move out of my apartment by February 3rd and I've been searching for a place to stay short-term (February, and potentially March) in DC.

I've been searching and searching but to no avail. If you know of anybody, who knows somebody...  it takes a village, please let me know. I generally do not need much, just some privacy and a place to meditate; and I consider myself to be clean, very respectful and quiet, and I will not have a lot of belongings with me (will be in storage). I'm currently between jobs and housing; however, I can provide some compensation.

Thank you in advance,

Daria

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] New meditation session at Mt. Pleasant's Lamont Dharma House

Hi sangha friends,

I enjoyed our sit and discussion last night, and was hoping to share this at the end, but we ran out of time.

I'm teaching a new weekly meditation class at Lamont Dharma House starting Tuesday January 29, 7-8pm. It will be accessible to all levels and includes guided meditation, a brief talk about the practice, and group discussion.

As a writer/researcher/organizer in the labor movement, I'll be orienting the practice towards economic and social justice. This means I'll be emphasizing the benefits of meditation that go beyond individual growth, by applying mindfulness to work, relationships, and politics. No fee; donations encouraged but not required. What you will be required to do is state your pronouns as part of an introductory check-in each session.

If you want a taste of the sort of space, feeling, and discussion I intend to do my best to create on Tuesday nights, check out my podcast, Meditation for the Masses.

I'm excited and grateful for the opportunity to teach this practice that means so much to us. Hope to see you there!

With warmth,
Jeremy

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Sunday at The Potter's House 6:00 - 7:30 PM

Dear Friends,

We look forward to our gathering at the Potter's House this Sunday, January 20 from 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm. We will meet in the Community Room behind the bookstore/cafe. The meeting space is wheelchair accessible. Chairs and some meditation cushions will be available, but please feel free to bring your own gear.

Since we didn't have a chance last week, after our regular meditation period, Kristin and I will lead our annual "refuge ceremony" to affirm and remind ourselves of the beautiful and powerful resources of our practice. We will follow with a community conversation to discover which class formats, topics, activities, etc. will be most helpful to you and your practice in 2019.

We look forward to practicing together, hearing and gathering your feedback and just being with you.

Much love,

Linda & Kristin

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Sunday @ the Potters House 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM

Hi friends,

Our lives are filled with music: the beating of a heart, the singing of a bird, the harmonizing of a Sunday choir (the jams that the Potter's House staff play in the background while we are meditating). These beats and notes vibrate through the prism of human minds, where they are recomposed through memory and creative association. We can look back upon the soundtrack of our lives, at once unique, but also universal. Rhythm, melody, and harmony belong to no one and everyone. Music ripples down through generations, across species, and through "inanimate" objects like trees, oceans, and houses. This is the truth of anatta or "no self," and it applies not only to music but to every aspect of existence.

Before grinding away at the resolutions for a new year, let's take the opportunity to get together and listen to the music that is already playing (effortlessly, beautifully, perfectly) across the universe and through these minds and bodies. Join me at the Potter's House this Sunday from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM to meditate, contemplate the Buddha's teaching of anatta, and maybe feel our way into the loving spirit that holds us all.

We will meet in the Community Room, located in the back of the Potter's House Cafe at 1658 Columbia Rd. The space is wheelchair accessible. Chairs and some meditation cushions will be available, but please feel free to bring your own gear if you'd like.

With love,

Devin
