[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] An Evening with Downtown Dharma Sangha-From Uneasiness to Present Mindedness: A Journey to Mindful Living.

Downtown-Dharma.jpg

From Uneasiness to Present Mindedness: A Journey to Mindful Living.

Downtown Dharma Sangha

DATE:  2/26/2023  TIME: 7:00 - 8:30 PM

Location

  • In-person: 1910 14th Street NW,  3rd Floor, Washington, DC 20009

Facilitator- Travis M. Spencer

This Sunday's topic and practice will be an opportunity to explore Mindful Living as a way to mitigate daily life stressors. In a heart-centered practice of listening and sharing with one another, We will explore and discuss the four elements of F.L.O.W. and how it supports shifting from Stress-filled days to a life anchored in Mindful Living.  The four elements of F.L.O.W. are as follows:

  • Following your intuition: Being present with your intuitive energy (innate goodness or Buddha nature)

  • Letting go of outcomes and expectations:  Being led by equanimity,  sympathetic joy, loving-kindness, and compassion. Trusting your responsive decisions will yield the best outcomes for yourself and all others.

  • Owning your experience: Unconditionally embracing yourself.  You are not perfect;  You are divine.  Owning your experience empowers you to mitigate victimization of yourself and others and cultivate sustainable joy in your life and community.

  • Welcoming growth edges:  Allow life to be your dharma.  Your awakening, healing, and self-actualizing live within your openness and acceptance of your dharma or life lessons.

During my dharma share, I will explore:

  • I will explore how present-mindedness via F.L.O.W. supports our journey to Mindful Living.

Quote

"With mindfulness, you can establish yourself in the present in order to touch the wonders of life that are available in that moment." "Many people are alive but don't touch the miracle of being alive."

You can also join (for the sit) via Zoom. Details for attending in person and online are below.

Re: [Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Tomorrow's sangha?

Sure! We meet at 7pm at 1910 14th St NW on the 3rd floor. The doors will be locked at 7:10pm. You don't need to bring anything but yourself 🙂

There are currently no covid protocols in place, but folks are welcome to wear a mask if that's their preference. Yoga District does ask that we stay home if experiencing any covid-like symptoms!

Looking forward to seeing folks tonight,
Amy

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] follow-up from Sunday's talk

Hello friends,

Wishing you an easy week. This coming Sunday, there's no teacher. Instead, the sangha will be sitting together and then enjoying a meal nearby. Hooray!

In this past Sunday's session, we talked about The Five Remembrances. There are many translations, but I offer one below. This text comes from the Upajjhatthana Sutta. The wikipedia page on the sutta and the practice is pretty robust, and here's a translation of the sutta by Thanissaro Bhikku. We also read this sutta from the majanikaya (or middle texts) that describe how the understanding of old age, illness and death played a major role in the Buddha's journey, and passage 30 from this sutta about how, after almost dying of emaciation, Buddha remembered the nibbana-like ease of simply sitting under a shady tree.

If you feel moved to offer a contribution (dana), you can venmo @downtowndharma. For this past week, I'll be re-gifting dana towards earthquake rescue from the Syrian American Medical Society

Thanks so much. Wishing everyone all the best, with hope to be sitting and celebrating together again soon.

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] This Sunday 2/12 dharma practice

Dear dharma friends,

Wishing everyone well this sunny Saturday morning. It is my honor to be facilitating Downtown Dharma this Superbowl Sunday, 2/12 from 7-8:30pm at Yoga District at 1910 14th St. NW.  You can also join via Zoom. Masks will be OPTIONAL for this session, and are always welcome for those who prefer to wear one. We'll be done just in time for the halftime show so you can get your meditation, and your Rihanna, too :)

The Five Remembrances
Remember that Buddha guy? This week, we'll remember how the soon-to-be Buddha, prince Siddartha Gautama's journey began by coming into contact with old age, sickness, death and an enlightened yogi. Then we'll explore a practice of the Five Remembrances, in which we're asked to recall the possibility of these states in our own lives. While it may seem depressing in a culture that wishes to hide and deny these truths, it can actually be a powerful antidote that helps us make the most of our lives exactly as they are, and greet life's inevitable pains with greater ease and compassion.

Attending In Person
If you are attending in person, you will need to do the following:

a) Register through the Yoga District sign-up link -- scroll way to the bottom for (14th street) Sunday 7pm.

b) Submit proof of boosted vaccination to yogadc@yogadistrict.com or present it in person at the studio.

d) Arrive 10 minutes early (6:50 pm) to check-in. (Since we staff these events ourselves, the doors will be locked at 7:10 pm and unfortunately, there will be no one at the desk to admit latecomers.)

We ask everyone to register and submit proof of boosted vaccination ahead of time to avoid delays. Class is held on the 3rd floor, up two flights of stairs.

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] New Wednesday Night Drop in Class

Dear Downtown Dharma friends,

I miss seeing you all and wanted to let folks know that starting this Wednesday I will be co-teaching  a weekly Insight Meditation class from 7:00-8:30 PM. The class will be a hybrid format so you can join in person in the Fireside Room at the River Road Unitarian Church (6301 River Rd, Bethesda, MD 20817) or via Zoom. You can register for the Zoom link and read more about the class here.

I will alternate teaching responsibilities with a friend and colleague, Trisha Stotler. I'll be starting my rotation this Wednesday February 15th and teaching bi-weekly going forward.

The class is free and open to the public. While the teachings and techniques are grounded in the early Buddhist texts, it is not a religious event in that there are no rituals or beliefs associated with it or required for participation. I teach these classes solely because I find it to be a helpful and enjoyable experience. While we do accept donations, they are not expected.

If you have any questions please feel free to reach out.

Devin

During our time together we will join in a heart-centered practice of listening and sharing with one another. We will explore the following quote:

"I could see that suffering is not only individual; it is also collective. Suffering can be transmitted to us by our ancestors, or it can be there in the society around us."

Hanh, Thich Nhat. The Art of Living (p. 19). HarperCollins. Kindle Edition.

During my dharma share, I will explore the following questions:

  • In life, what does healing your ancestors' suffering look like?

  • How do we offer compassion as we require accountability for criminal actions and justice in our society?

Afterward, we welcome you to participate in Ruth King's Metta prayer for racial healing.
