[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] More Circling Saturday 12/3 and Later this Month

Hello Friends,

For those of you who enjoyed our circling at Downtown Dharma on Sunday or who missed it but wished they could have come - there's more circling coming your way!

I hosted an initial circling group at my house a couple weeks ago, and I'm excited to keep it going. The gatherings will be held at my apartment in Adam's Morgan at 7 PM and limited to 10 attendees - first come first served! I will send the address to confirmed attendees. Masks are optional.

If you're interested and available, you can register:
- For Saturday 12/3 here
- For Saturday 12/17 here

What is Circling?

Circling is a mindful conversational practice and is often referred to as an inter-relational meditation.

We do this by exploring the present in connection: what is it like in my body, feelings, mind, spirit, being with others? How are they impacted hearing what's going on for me?

I find it very difficult to get a sense of what Circling/Relatefulness is like without experiencing it firsthand. You can expect to do a series of activities in small groups or pairs with breaks for questions/group discussion and a full group circle at the end.

Interested? Come join us! No previous experience necessary!

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions! Hope to see you there!

Leah Miller

The latest news on ways to give back

Giving Tuesday

Please make a donation today!

Today is Giving Tuesday, the perfect day to give to your favorite charity. Mission of Love Charities (MOLC) helps the homeless and low income individuals and families with a daily food pantry, rental and utility assistance, help with SNAP benefits and work readiness programs.

In 2022, the community was served with housing, utility and food pantry referrals. For Thanksgiving, 400 turkeys and food baskets were given away. The work readinesss educational programs included OSHA training, CNA/GNA training and a Meeting and Events Planning class. All students found the program helpful in moving their careers forward. Some students were successful at obtaining better jobs and all who sought employment were hired.

Donate to MOLC Inc. today and help families in need during the holidays.

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Circling This Sunday at Downtown Dharma

Dear Dharma friends,

It is my honor to be facilitating Downtown Dharma this Sunday, 11/27 from 7-8:30pm at Yoga District at 1910 14th St. NW.  You can also join via Zoom. Masks will be OPTIONAL for this session, and are always welcome for those who prefer to wear one.

We'll be doing our usual 25 minute meditation and then be continuing from last week and doing something a little different again...Circling!!

During our hour of circling on Sunday you can expect to do a series of activities in small groups or pairs with breaks for questions/group discussion and potentially a full group circle at the end.

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions! Hope to see you there!

If you are attending in person, you will need to do the following:

a) Register through the Yoga District sign-up link -- scroll way to the bottom for (14th street) Sunday 7pm.

d) Please arrive 10 minutes early (6:50 pm) to check-in. (Since we staff these events ourselves, the doors will be locked at 7:10 pm and unfortunately, there will be no one at the desk to admit latecomers.)

We ask everyone to register and submit proof of boosted vaccination ahead of time to avoid delays. Class is held on the 3rd floor, up two flights of stairs.

Mindful Movements.
If you've ever read all the way to the bottom of my emails and seen my signature, you know that I'm not only a meditation teacher, I'm also the founder of The People's Own Organic Power (POOP) Project. We make arts and education that stimulates creative conversation about sustainable sanitation for the person, planet and global community. This Sat, Nov 19, is the sanitation sector's big day: UN World Toilet Day, created to honor the humble loo, raise awareness of so many living without this necessity, the consequences of that to human and environmental health, and the many opportunities to improve the situation and bring us into a more wholesome relationship with our grossest domestic product. Learn more at the sites above, or check out the event I'm hosting Saturday, 4pm at the DC Comedy Loft. Info below and tix here

In honor of World Toilet Day, this Sunday's talk will peek at what the Buddhist canon might have to say about this aspect of our embodied experience, and how our time in the bathroom can be a moment of mindfulness in a busy day, and also an invitation to greater egolessness. To that end, we'll explore a particular practice called Patikulamanasikara, or mindfulness of the grotesque body, that breaks the body down into its component parts for the sake of non-attachment. Please bring your whole self so that we can lose a few pieces along the way :)

WHERE: DC Comedy Loft @ 1523 22nd St NW, Washington, DC 20037

TICKETS: On sale here. General Admission Tickets are $22 (Double Deuce), or VIPoo for $33 (Turdy-three) includes a copy of Shawn Shafner's new book, Know Your Sh*t, a Pet Poo, and more!

Who cares about toilets? Wee doo! The UN declared November 19 as World Toilet Day in order to highlight the importance of the humble loo, and to advocate for universal access to safe, dignified sanitation. Ever been out for a late night in DC? Then you, too, understand how valuable a toilet is - especially when it's hard to come by. That's why The POOP Project, Griefcat and Throne are teaming up to produce Loo Aid: A World Toilet Day Comedy Fundraising Craptastical!

Come out of the water closet and join in the fun, Nov. 19, 4-5:30pm at the DC Comedy Loft above the Bier Baron Tavern. This crapload of comedy goodness will include excrem-entertainment from The POOP Project's Shawn Shafner, hilarious musical duo Griefcat, sets from comedians Winston Hodges, TJ Ferguson and Blaire Postman! WIN some raffle booty courtesy of Tushy, the modern and sustainable bidet company, FullFillery, a zero-waste refill shop in Takoma Park, Mr. Ellie Pooh's sustainable elephant dung stationery, and more! To be sure the toilet stays front and center, comedians will share the stage with a custom painted toilet planter designed by Janky Painting & Toilet Company (aka New York-based artist Colin Weeks). PLUS purge your worst bathroom stories with Throne, DC's quirkiest startup building the future of public restrooms. Join us and give a sh*t: a portion of ticket sales will benefit the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation
