[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Beginning Anew text from Kaira Jewel--what we studied tonight in sangha

Dear friends, as a support for the Beginning Anew practice we learned tonight, attached is a description of the Beginning Anew practice taken from an article by Annabelle Zinser and a short paragraph from the Plum Village's website on this practice.

Wishing you ease and deepening in this practice. Thank you for your sincere efforts!

Warmly,

Speaking Out Against Injustice with Loving Speech and Deep Listening – a talk by Kaira Jewel Lingo on Thursday, February 23

How can we stand up for the values of social justice, inclusion, respect and dignity for all in a way that does not contribute to divisiveness? How can we reach out to those who are different from us to help bridge the divide?

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Join Us!: speaking out against injustice with loving speech and deep listening

How can we stand up for the values of social justice, inclusion, respect and dignity for all in a way that does not contribute to divisiveness? How can we reach out to those who are different from us to help bridge the divide?

Join Kaira Jewel Lingo on Thursday, February 23 at the Lamont Dharma House to hear a talk on speaking out against injustice with loving speech and deep listening, the fourth of the five (5) mindfulness trainings as offered by Thich Nhat Hanh. Taking inspiration from Loving Speech and Deep Listening, we will explore how our words and compassionate listening can both protest harm and promote reconciliation and peace.

The session is from 7-8:30 p.m. If you arrive late please wait to enter until the meditation has ended. Then you can enter through the second door at end of hallway.

Please RSVP to Kathleen Gless at community@lamontdharma.org by February 21 so we can anticipate the number in attendance.

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] New Meditation Course at Lamont Dharma House

Hi all, I wanted to let folks know about a new course starting at the Lamont Dharma House (in Mt Pleasant) at the end of February with Kaira Jewel Lingo, called Deepening in the Dharma.

The course will include instruction on meditation and reflections on buddhist ethics, such as generosity, patience, honesty and right effort. Teachings will be grounded in the exploration of how we can practically apply the techniques in our daily lives and will involve embodied, creative and interactive practices at times done alone, in pairs and in small groups.

Dates: Tuesdays from 7:30-9:00pm; February 28 to May 30, 2017

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] You're invited: Saturday March 4 (5 - 8pm) potluck dinner and social justice discussion

Dear sangha members,

Several of us met this afternoon to talk about engaged Buddhism and ways to cultivate connections within our sangha community. Following on this discussion, I am pleased to host a potluck dinner and discussion on Saturday, March 4 from 5 - 8 pm. We hope you'll join us! The plan is to socialize, eat tasty food, have a short sit, and hold discussions around topics in which sangha members might take action (e.g., eco-sattva, sanctuary for immigrants and refugees, racial justice, healthcare).  If you have ideas about actionable steps that individuals could take to move forward on any of these issues, please come share these with us!

My address is 1605 S St. (just a couple of blocks from the church where the Sunday night Dupont Circle class meets). Please let me know if you plan to join us. Many thanks if you can bring a vegetarian entree/side/dessert or snack to share!

Hope to see you then.

Best,
Rebecca

This past Sunday, Hugh spoke about engaging mindfully with the challenges presented by the inauguration of President Trump. Some of us feel that mindful engagement calls for resistance to Trump's agenda, which appears to be planned to dial back advances towards a more inclusive society that takes on care for the ecosystem that have been made in many areas.

We plan to meet next Sunday at 4:30 to discuss ways to engage, either individually or as a community. We are still working on finalizing a meeting place. Afterwards, we will head over to the Sunday night sit at the Church of the Holy City

If you are interested, please let me know. I will send out an email with the location as soon as possible to those who are interested. Please feel to join us if you come every Sunday or only every so often. All are welcome.

With metta,
Scott
