Re: [dcphp-dev] sessions, iframes, headache

Not really sure, but this may be relevant: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/172223/how-do-i-set-cookies-from-outside-domains-inside-iframes-in-safari

"From visited" is the default cookie policy on iOS Safari. If that's the issue, an OPTIONS request or something akin to a CORS preflight might do it perhaps?

http://stoningtonpizza.com/order_online.html

When that first page is loaded, it grabs the id from the URL and creates a session storing restaurant info.  Once you navigate off the page, the session data is lost and things go awry.  This doesn't happen an all browsers, just a few namely some versions of safari on the iPad and iPod.  I've added all the P3P headers but can't seem to get it to work.

Also, this is running on CodeIgnitor version 1.7 and I've tried replacing the default session handler with native sessions and neither fixed it.

Has anyone experienced this?

Thanks,

RE: [dcphp-dev] Introductions

Hey folks, I’m John Howard--@OSDinDC. Not a developer, but I do enjoy the community and the Symfony2 release was the first Meetup I made it to when I moved to DC last year.  I started as a tech recruiter, not really knowing what that was, in NYC in 2006.  I found I enjoyed the relationships that came out of being a different type of recruiter from what engineers were used to. When I started we were working heavy Java/C++ roles on Wall St; the market dropped out I started working with, what was for me, the first manager hiring for PHP, at a small media startup in the Village.  Never really looked back…led me into RoR, Python, JavaScript, Mobile, DevOps roles and companies and folks I enjoyed working with more…helping small startups working to put together great teams and un-bureaucratic companies connect with and hire good tech folks.  Also helped us create and host more Meetups, events, etc. within the community we work.  Looking forward to continuing to do so…(hopefully this will be considered Recruiter Spam-Free—don’t post or chat up anyone here aside from giving heads-ups on events, etc.)

It's been a good long while since everybody on the list has introduced themselves and said what they do. This will help us know who's on the list and give new people an idea of the range of talent they have to draw on by asking questions of the list.

I'll kick it off:

I'm Sandy Smith, and I organize DCPHP along with Barry Austin (DC Beverage Subgroup) and Brock Boland (He Who Keeps This List Free of Recruiter Spam).

I've been working with PHP since '99. I'm a child of the 80's and grew up on BASIC (C-64) and then tried my hand at other professions before settling on tech. Most of my career has been spent consulting (mostly building/configuring CMSes, both custom and Drupal) for DC-area clients, especially nonprofits, but recently I've been more in the startup world. I was a cofounder of mojoLive.com and have a new company that does both consulting and products called Muskteers.me. We just started a Kickstarter for two new products if you want to check it out: http://kck.st/QjQZho

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] This Sunday, Sept 30: Sangha Discussion with Hugh, 4pm

Hi Sangha friends,

I wanted to remind everyone know that we'll be having a community gathering / discussion with Hugh this Sunday, September 30, at 4pm at Tynan Cofee and Tea in Columbia Heights at 1400 Irving St, http://tynancoffeeandtea.com/locations.html

The gathering is open to anyone who would like to join, but please let me know if advance if you are planning to come send me any topics or issues that you'd like to discuss so we can put together an agenda. In general, we'll be continuing the conversation about building the All Souls/ Downtown Dharma community and how we can contribute to that process and provide support to IMCW. We started a discussion about generosity and dana at the Sunday before last, and I think this will give us an opportunity to explore some of those ideas and questions further with Hugh.

I look forward to seeing you all soon,
Danya

[dcphp-dev] Master Retailer Database -- MediaWiki? OSM?

I have data from a bunch of different government agencies regulating
retail outlets. Most (but not all) of them have some sort of internal
identifier, but it's maddening to try to get reports with data where
the name or address is slightly different, and of course there's no
master id.

So I'm trying to put together a master database, with our own
identifier. I figure we'll go through some address standardization
for the first pass. It gets more complicated, though, when store
names change (e.g. when a business is sold, the address stays the same
but the name doesn't) or moves, or is added, whatever. We're talking
about making opening the data up under the Open Database License, and
I'd like to use some sort of standard tool.

MediaWiki came to mind first. It'd be a great UI, and would allow
people to update the site with specific information like if the store
was no longer in business. But the majority of the data updates would
come from merging lists from various agencies. On the huge plus side,
we have an API for access and updating, and a built-in history tool.

OpenStreetMap was my second idea. Many of the same benefits, but a
bit more awkward to work with. The huge advantage is that the data
relevant to OSM we get from the agencies could be pushed back to the
OSM database. But I'm not sure how to handle our project-specific
data (e.g. violations) which is clearly of no interest to OSM.

I'm leaning toward MediaWiki, and was wondering if anyone had any
experience with managing what is more often stored in a relational
database. I'm trying to avoid writing a full site for this, but it's
tempting to start with name, address, phone, etc., but then I'd have
to manage all the history and wiki nature of this. So I'm looking for
a combination of the free-flow wiki-style data and a structured
database.

I worked on something a while ago where we just enforced headers,
which roughly mapped to each field. But that felt a bit hackish.
It's more like I want a form within a mediawiki page.

We will write some plugins for linking to data that comes directly
from a database, like the violations themselves, but the common data
is what I'm thinking about now.

Any pointers?

Thanks!

Tac

Resolved: The U.S. does not do enough to support Israel.

[dcphp-dev] Re: Alexandria Happy Hour?

From a depth of personal experience I can recommend Hanks Oyster Bar, at the corner of King and Henry.  A bit of a walk from the Metro, but worth the excursion.  Decent selection of beer (no Rustico, but still OK) and great food.  That's my two Euros... Ray

At the meetup tonight the idea of an Alexandria happy hour came up. Would anybody be interested?

Ideas so far are for something in Old Town or up by Crystal City.

So would you go? Would you metro? And where would you prefer?

Re: [dcphp-dev] Introductions

Hi I'm Chris.  I don't have a formal tech education but started learning PHP around 2000 and have used it in a variety of capacities.  The DC PHP conferences helped me a lot, as did writing down every thing Keith and Eli said at ZendCon and a couple other events in the mid-2000s.  I want to someday visit the crazy guys in Austin but like living in the DC area.  I've spent some time in the past year learning Symfony2, which is nicely designed and exploring the code has improved my overall programming skills.

I've spent a lot of time working with Joomla. Lately, I've been playing around with Node.js.

RE: [dcphp-dev] Introductions

Hi Folks,

My name is Brent Lightner.  I run a boutique PHP/Drupal shop located on Capitol Hill in DC.  I used to code, but honestly, I’m far too rusty and removed from day-to-day development to call myself a programmer anymore.  (I still know just enough to think I know what I’m talking about, when in fact I don’t.  ie, just enough to annoy people that actually know what they’re doing ;-).   As a team, we’ve built some impressive PHP apps, our most famous being a system that matches people who need kidneys with people willing to donate theirs.  Our software is directly responsible for over 500 transplants to-date, is fully HIPAA compliant, makes use of some killer AJAX and JQuery for real-time scenario rendering, and all sort of other neat stuff that makes this build the most complicated and meaningful that we’ve ever done.  These days we’re more about Drupal, but most of our developers come from a PHP background, so we’re always building custom modules and extending what Drupal can do out of the box.

If you hang out in IRC rooms, you’ll recognize my frequent and unabashed plea for new talent.  We are always actively seeking experienced Drupal/PHP developers.  We pay well above the curve.  We work on varied and interesting projects (mainly in the non profit world).  We are a totally casual shop (a shorts and flipflops kind of place).  And there are lots of perks (like Friday happy hours starting at 3 with a staff meeting on our company boat shortly thereafter.  (If you’re in the DC area and want to join us for a Friday cruise, we enjoy tag-alongs.)  So if you’re interested in any of the above, ping me.

We’re in the process of moving our office to a bigger building.  Once we do, we’ll try to host some of the meetups so that we meet more of you!
