Is there another reading group gathering coming up? I'm sorry to clog your inboxes, but I wanted to make sure to put it on my calendar (and get the book!)

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Dana for Guest Teacher Em (Optional)

Hi all,

Following up on Em's comments at the end of her talk at Downtown Dharma on Sunday - If you are inclined to send dana to her, her information is below. If you already directed dana to the shared Downtown Dharma account, that also works!

Venmo: @em-morrison Paypal: em.f.morrison@gmail.com

Apologies for the multiple emails this week. As we head into a period w/more guest teachers than we've had before, we will not send a follow-up like this every week -- our volunteer team is meeting to review the process and figure out what will work best.

Thanks,
Diane

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Sangha Member to Guest Teach on June 12?

Dear Downtown Dharma Sangha,

As I mentioned last night, we are looking for guest teachers at Downtown Dharma for some dates this summer, and specifically for the evening of June 12.  Are you interested? If yes  -- please email me 1:1 (dianeruthadamson@gmail.com) and I will be happy to share all the information you'll need. If you may want to guest teach on a different evening this summer, please let me know that too. 😎

It's very special and appreciated when a member of our community "guest" teaches. You do NOT need to be the ultimate "expert" meditator, reveal profound insights, have been practicing for X number of years, etc. Everyone has something to contribute to our community, and we aim to be an encouraging and supportive environment.

Thanks very much!
Diane

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] DD Book Group next meets 6-7:30pm (Norman Fischer's Training in Compassion)

Hi friends,

Many thanks to Brandel for hosting the last meeting of the Downtown Dharma book group.

I will be hosting our next gathering on Saturday, June 11 from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm. For those of you who prefer to join on Zoom, here is the Zoom link

We agreed that we would read Norman Fischer's Training in Compassion: Zen Teachings on the Practice of Lojong. If you want, you may find it interesting to also look at one of Pema Chodron's books on this topic--she's written a few. As always, you're welcome to come even if you haven't read the book.

My living room is spacious but to ensure safety, I will be limiting the number of people who can attend in person--so please RSVP as soon as you know you would like to attend. Unless COVID rates are dramatically higher, masks will be optional. I have a compromised immune system--all in-person attendees must be fully vaccinated.

I'll have some light snacks and beverages on hand but you're welcome to bring additional vegetarian or dairy treats.

I will provide my home address when you RSVP. When you RSVP, please also let me know the following:

  • Would you be interested in coming a half hour early for a sit?
  • Can you bring a cushion or chair for you or someone else to sit on?
I look forward to seeing you in June. Please let me know if you have any questions at all.

Sincerely,

Marilyn

HOW TO GET IN: When you get to the building, use the arrows on the exterior buzzer on the right-hand side to get to "F" as my last name is "France de Bravo." It will ring me and I'll buzz you into the lobby. Once in the lobby,  the concierge will key you into the elevator. Tell them you are visiting Brandel France de Bravo in #433. Once on the 4th floor, you'll exit left. Our unit is on the left-hand side. If for some reason no concierge is on hand, kindly call me on my phone at 202-297-8676. I or my husband, Mario, will come down to escort you up. Sorry for any inconvenience!

I look forward to hosting you, and to a lively discussion.

Warmly,

Brandel France de Bravo

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Tomorrow Evening: Hugh Byrne

Dear friends,

I am grateful to let you know that Hugh Byrne will be leading Downtown Dharma tomorrow evening. Hugh was the founding teacher of the Downtown Dharma community and has been sharing the wisdom of the dharma for decades. Hugh is also one of those people whose delightful, gentle, and perceptive nature is a testament to the fruits of practice (I assume. Maybe he was just born that way.)

Hugh describes tomorrow night's talk like this: "The theme of the talk will be 'Untangling the Tangles of Our Lives'. We'll explore how the Buddha's teachings and practices help us live with ease and freedom."

The event will go from 7-8:30 at Yoga District at 1910 14th St. NW. You can also join via Zoom. Details for attending in person and online are below.

With love,

Devin

Attending In Person
If you are attending in person, you will need to do the following:

a) Register through the Yoga District sign-up link (scroll to the bottom for Sunday 7 pm).

b) Submit proof of boosted vaccination to yogadc@yogadistrict.com or present it in person at the studio.

c) Wear a mask.

d) Arrive 10 minutes early (6:50 pm) to check-in and acclimate to what is still a new space and process for most of us. (Since we staff these events ourselves, the doors will be locked at 7:10 pm and unfortunately, there will be no one at the desk to admit latecomers.)

For everyone's safety and for the viability of this offering, these requirements are not negotiable. We ask everyone to register and submit proof of boosted vaccination ahead of time so that we don't have long delays. Class is held on the 3rd floor, up two flights of stairs. There are rugs, bolsters, and folding chairs for seating.

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] New weekly sangha for young adults who want to wake up

Hi all - I was a member of Downtown Dharma a few years back when I still lived in DC.  A friend and I are starting a new sangha for young adults with the intention of creating more community around the dharma, and I wanted to share this opportunity with this group. We'll meet each week over Zoom to sit and also gather monthly in-person. More details below. Please feel free to share this with others. Thank you!

A new sangha is forming for young adults (ages 18-39), and we invite you to join us. We are open to anyone interested in mindfulness as a way to waking up from suffering and living kind, compassionate lives.

We plan to meet weekly to sit, share about our practice, and discuss a dharma-related reading. We will meet virtually each Thursday at 8-9pm ET, starting May 12, and intend to gather in-person once per month in the DC area. There is no homework and no cost. You can join our weekly meetings via this Zoom link. You can also sign up for our Google Group mailing list.

If you have questions or want to attend but cannot make the current time, please email the organizers, Ryland Li at li.ryland@gmail.com or Stephen Steiner at stephen.steiner@gmx.com. Please feel free to share this invitation with anyone who may be interested.

Note that we are not affiliated with IMCW, or any particular group, teacher, or tradition. We are just friends who are looking for community around the dharma.

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Tomorrow Evening: Stillness Amid the Storm

Greetings Dear Community,

This world has always been a wondrous and beautiful place, and a dangerous one as well. Today's world in particular seems characterized by increasing stress, perhaps at multiple scales including our most personal circumstances. Amid stormy conditions, it's quite normal to feel uncertain and even anxious, perhaps like we've lost our barings and unsure of how to right the ship, even as the storm shows no sign of letting up. It is precisely times like this when our practice can switch from an interesting exploration to a vital lifeline, an illuminated compass in the dark.

Join us Sunday evening as we explore the potency of stillness and its potential to both soothe the anxious heart and reveal our own innate wisdom.

We will meet from 7-8:30 at Yoga District at 1910 14th St. NW. You can also join us via Zoom. Details for attending in person and online are below. I hope to see you there.

With appreciation,
Kristin

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Teaching Update

Dear friends,

As I mentioned at my last class, I will be stepping back from my role as a teacher on the DD teaching team to better align my schedule and obligations with the rhythms and needs of my family. This community has been a teacher, a friend, and a home over the past four years and I will certainly feel the absence in my heart. Travis will be stepping into the lead teaching/admin role and I am grateful that his loving heart will be guiding the way forward.

While I will no longer be teaching on Sunday evenings, I do plan to continue to offer other classes and groups. Please see below for details.

Living Dharma Group
The next two cohorts of the Living Dharma Group will begin on May 19th & 20th and end on August 18th & 19th, respectively. There will be no session the fourth week of June (the 6/23 and 6/24 sessions). I will be offering two concurrent groups if there is enough interest: Thursday mornings from 9:30-10:30 and Friday mornings from 9:30-10:55. The Friday group runs for more time because it had more people in it and I anticipate that it will again. The sessions will be conducted via Zoom. These groups are an opportunity for dedicated students of the dharma to deepen their understanding and experience of the dharma, supported by weekly closed group sessions and daily meditation instructions (sent by email). The closed group sessions include an introductory period of meditation, followed by a Q&A-format discussion. This group is being offered freely. Donations are welcome and not expected.

If you are interested, please indicate which session or sessions work for you and your relative preference between the two. Once the groups are assigned there won't be any crossover between them. Please only sign up if you anticipate that you can attend at least 10 of the 13 sessions. If you cannot commit to 10 sessions but want to participate let me know and we can feel it out depending on how many others are interested.

The last round was a rewarding experience for me, and, based on the feedback, for many of the other participants as well. I look forward to continuing this work together.

Parent Group: Gauging Interest
I am working with Maya Cohen to organize a dharma parent group. The group will support parents in finding paths to peace and wellbeing through an understanding and practice of the dharma. We plan to have the group virtually and to provide a semi-structured format for sharing. If you are interested, please let me know and I will add you to the distribution list. This group will be offered on a donation basis. Contributions will be welcome and not expected.

Dharma Class & Daylongs
I intend to be able to offer a regular dharma class and occasional daylong retreats in the not-too-distant future. I will let this listserv know when those offerings are on the calendar.

With love,

Devin

Hello, bookish friends!

I will be hosting our next gathering: on Saturday, May 7th from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm. For those of you who prefer to join on Zoom, here is the Zoom link

We agreed that we would read at least the first half of Viktor Frankl's Man's Search for Meaning (I'm hoping to read the whole thing: the second half is about Logotherapy or using life purpose for therapy). I think it's safe to say that Part I, Experiences in a Concentration Camp, is well under 100 pages, no matter the edition. As always, you're welcome to come even if you haven't finished the first part, or read any of the book!

A warning: my living room is very small; we will be tight, sitting in close proximity (with a window or door open), so I ask that you please be fully vaccinated and boosted. Masks will be optional. PLEASE RSVP.

I'll have some light snacks and beverages on hand but you're welcome to bring anything you have a hankering for.

RE: [Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Next DD Book Group: Saturday, May 7 from 6-7:30 pm in Logan Circle (Viktor Frankl's Man's Search for Meaning)

Hi Brandel,

I'll be there!  Thanks so much for hosting.  Will try to get through as much of the book as possible.  Big fan of the concept of Logotherapy.

See you soon,

Harris

Subject: [Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Next DD Book Group: Saturday, May 7 from 6-7:30 pm in Logan Circle (Viktor Frankl's Man's Search for Meaning)

I live at 1515 15th Street (between P and Church) in the Logan Circle neighborhood. My unit is #433.

Warmly,

--
