Donate to Your Favorite Charity

Donate

Dear Members of the Community and Friends of Mission of Love Charities,

I hope you are enjoying this holiday week.

For many people, the year end is a time when they make donations to the valued, important nonprofit organizations that serve their community, and we would hope that when you sit down to do those donations, that you would consider making a year-end gift to Mission of Love Charities.

In fact, since 1991, the Mission has served the needy people in our community. All of the people served by Mission of Love Charities are qualified to have incomes at or below 150 percent of the federal poverty low-income guideline.

The people we serve are people in need. Because they have nowhere else to go, they come to the Mission for food, clothing, financial assistance for housing, job training, and physical and mental health assistance.

Mission of Love Charities depends on your financial support to help these people.  If you are able, please Donate.

In any case, on behalf of the staff and Board of Directors of the Mission of Love Charities, I wish you a very happy holiday season. It’s a time of family, good food and celebrations.  May you enjoy all of these.

Best wishes!

Deborah Martinez

End of Year Giving

 End of Year Giving

Donate to Mission of Love Charities Today

Dear Mission of Love Charities Supporters:

As the end of 2022 draws near, and the beginning of 2023 is upon us, Mission of Love Charities would like to thank you for all of your support this year. Without the generosity of donors, Mission of Love Charities would not be able to accomplish the many tasks needed for homeless and low-income individuals and families to meet basic requirements such as food, housing, utilities assistance and work readiness programs.

Please consider making a donation of $25 to help with the Mission’s services, programs and events that give these communities much needed resources. Food insecurity affects more households than ever before, since the COVID-19 pandemic. Your donation will go directly into projects like the 5-day a week Food Pantry that serves so many more people in these difficult times.

Thank you for everything you do to assist with Mission of Love Charities’ initiatives. In this season of giving, remember those less fortunate. End of year giving is also a great tax deduction. Have a blessed holiday season and a wonderful New Year in 2023!

Happy Holidays!

Giving to Your Favorite Charity for the Holidays

Dear Colleagues and Supporters of Mission of Love Charities:

In this holiday season of our 31st year, the Mission of Love Charities persists in its commitment to serve the neediest people of the community. Our mission has always been to serve homeless and low-income families and individuals, but with the severe impact of the COVID pandemic, the number of people who are coming to the Mission for assistance with food, rent, utilities, health and other basic needs has increased dramatically. The negative impact of the pandemic has been particularly extreme in Prince George’s County. Indeed, most months more than 1,000 people have received food assistance at the Mission.

Most, if not all of these people are faced with food insecurity, and Mission of Love Charities seeks to provide them with food supplies that will help them during this difficult time. Additionally, many of the people who come to Mission of Love Charities for help are faced with the possibility of being evicted from their homes because they do not have money to pay the rent or the utilities.  We have been able to help hundreds of families and individuals over the last year who simply didn’t have the money to pay the rent.

A strategic priority for the future of Mission of Love Charities is developing its Workforce Development, Education and Job Training Program. Many of the people who have lost their jobs due to the pandemic may not ever get their jobs back. And providing them with the training to get back on their feet economically is perhaps the best long-term solution to their situation.

The program provides training that includes how to address the causes of lack of interest and confidence in getting a job, basic computer skills, financial literacy, writing skills, goal setting and how to dress for success – as well as specific training to become a Certified Nurse Assistant or Geriatric Nurse Assistant, a Meetings Planner, or an OSHA Construction Inspector. The program also includes the Cisco Networking Academy, which teaches coding skills.

The demand for these training classes is high with a long waiting list for people who wish to sign up for the training. Most, if not all, of the graduates of these programs have gone on to secure full-time and part-time jobs.

While all of these programs and services continue to contribute to the Mission, a major goal of the Mission is to raise the funds needed to renovate, rebuild and repurpose the abandoned school building across the street from its current facility. This building is the former Lyndon Hill Elementary School, which the Redevelopment Authority of Prince George’s County has leased to the Mission for $1/year. The renovation of the building is projected to cost about $4 million.

The new building promises to provide larger, improved and better equipped space that can accommodate several new and expanded programs that serve the needs of homeless and low-income community. Raising money and finding the financial resources to support the completion of the new building is central to the operations of the Mission.

We look to our friends, stakeholders and past and prospective donors to help us with this effort.

We humbly ask you to think about the vital, important work of the Mission of Love Charities this holiday season when you sit down to write your year-end donations.  Please be as generous as possible. And we promise that your contribution will be applied with the utmost care and scrupulous attention to responsible financial management. The return on your investment will be something we can all be proud of.

Thanks to all of you for your support.

Happy Holidays!

Sincerely,

Deborah Martinez

CEO

Downtown Dharma Sangha Winter Releasing Ceremony 2022: Letting Go and going with the F.L.O.W. of Life.

Downtown Dharma Sangha

DATE:  12/18/2022  TIME: 7:00 - 8:30 PM

Location

  • In-person:1910 14th Street NW,  3rd Floor, Washington, DC 20009

Facilitators- Travis M. Spencer

This Sunday's topic and practice will be an opportunity to participate in a Releasing Ceremony, which is a symbolic proclamation of "letting go" and allowing.  We will also participate in a heart-centered practice of listening and sharing with one another. We will discuss our aspirations for our lives as we move through Winter 2022-2023.

  • During my dharma share, I will explore the following question:

    • What am I releasing from my Life in 2022? How will embracing the present moment and going with F.L.O.W. stimulate growth and awakening in 2023?

"The most fundamental aggression to ourselves, the most fundamental harm we can do to ourselves, is to remain ignorant by not having the courage and the respect to look at ourselves honestly and gently."

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Upcoming Book Group Meeting-Theme of Forgiveness (12/17/22 @6pm)

Dear friends,

I hope you're all having a good week. Just a friendly reminder that our next book group meeting is this Saturday, December 17 at 6pm at my home--sign-up link is below. Vegetarian/dairy potluck will follow the meeting.

Please sign up here to indicate if you're coming in person or by Zoom, arriving early to sit, and staying for potluck. I can fit 12 people, give or take, in my apartment.

With the holiday season underway, whether you're gathering with family or friends this year or remembering such gatherings from the past, a lot of strong emotions can arise. So we're exploring  the theme of forgiveness in our December meeting and focusing on Desmond and Mpho Tutu's approach to the topic. Depending on the amount of time you have and your preferred medium, here are a few different ways to access their ideas:

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Follow-Up to Tonglen or "Giving and Receiving" in this season of Presents

Hello friends,

So lovely to practice together on Sunday. Thank you for your generosity of attention.

Here is the text we read together - if anyone wants to do further study it would be great to look at other translations. Tell me what you find!

Here are guided instructions for Tonglen from one of my teachers, Ethan Nichtern, in case you'd like to try practicing on your own.

If you wish to offer dana, you can do so via venmo at @shawn-shafner or via this paypal link

Thanks so much! Wishing everyone an easy week and a joyous season.

Wishing you so well as this weekend rolls in. It is a joy to be back with you, facilitating Downtown Dharma this Sunday, Dec 11, from 7-8:30pm at Yoga District at 1910 14th St. NW.  You can also join via Zoom. Masks will be OPTIONAL for this session, and are always welcome for those who prefer to wear one.

This Sunday, we'll focus on Tonglen for a Season of Giving. Tonglen is a traditional Tibetan practice meaning "giving and receiving." Through the practice, we imagine being a vessel through which negative energy can dissipate, sending positive wishes instead. What better way to enter this season of gift-giving? We'll talk a little bit about generosity in the Buddhist tradition, and the origins of Tonglen, but we'll also reserve a fair amount of time for guided practice and discussion. No special shopping trips required. You have everything the world needs already within you.

Attending In Person
If you are attending in person, you will need to do the following:

a) Register through the Yoga District sign-up link -- scroll way to the bottom for (14th street) Sunday 7pm.

b) Submit proof of boosted vaccination to yogadc@yogadistrict.com or present it in person at the studio.

c) Masks optional for this class.

d) Arrive 10 minutes early (6:50 pm) to check-in. (Since we staff these events ourselves, the doors will be locked at 7:10 pm and unfortunately, there will be no one at the desk to admit latecomers.)

We ask everyone to register and submit proof of boosted vaccination ahead of time to avoid delays. Class is held on the 3rd floor, up two flights of stairs.
