Hello all,

As mentioned at the sangha last Sunday evening, I'm going to host the next Buddha brunch in September.  It will be on Sunday, September 15 at 12:00, at my place in Adams Morgan.  You can RSVP directly to me (megkath@gmail.com) and I'll send you the address.

For discussion I picked the topic of kamma-- i.e. "right action" sometimes translated into English as "karma".  Here is a brief reading from the Pali canon for us to discuss.
If you click the link at the bottom of that page, "Kamma & the Ending of Kamma", it takes you to a longer exegesis of the passage and discussion of the concept that might be helpful if you're interested.

Look forward to seeing you soon!

Best wishes for a relaxing and peaceful holiday weekend,
Megan

Hi Janet and friends from All Souls,

Here is the link to the request for teachings on climate change (also reprinted below).  Kristin Barker and I from IMCW, along with sangha members in California and the UK, have been supporting this amazing opportunity to engage meditation teachers in the West on climate.

As with so many other difficult challenges in life, the dharma offers important lessons in how the human heart reacts (and often closes down) in response to a problem as scary as climate change.  And more importantly, the dharma offers a path toward wise action in the face of this crisis.

I've personally walked this road, as despair over climate change crushed me in my work and personal life and led me to the dharma.  I'm so excited that our meditation teachers are considering what role they can play.  If they hear from us, I'm sure they will respond.

The "request for teachings" can be found at the link below, which is housed on a new web platform called One Earth Sangha, which is also a product of the green committee here at IMCW.  Check it out and let me know what you think!

I'll say a few more words about this at All Souls on Sunday, but encourage you to read the request and consider adding your name.

With metta,

Lou

Hi Danya and friends -

Can anyone forward the letter to teachers about asking to share teachings that can be related to climate change? I'd like to send it to someone I met at a work conference from Colorado who wants to forward it to her circle of meditating friends.

Many thanks,
Janet

[dcphp-dev] [OT] Mobile / SoaS License Agreement

This isn't specific to PHP, but hoping someone can point me in the right direction.  We've tweaked our mobile app for a client, who will use it to upload pictures to our PHP-based website. (Okay, so it's a little bit related to PHP, but that's a stretch!)

They are a university, so the contract needs to go through their legal department, and they need a license agreement for the use of the mobile app and the related website.  We've set it up as a subscription fee, so they have access to the website for the one month that they'll need it, hoping, of course, that they'll use this method for other projects in the future.

Any suggestions on where I can get a basic SoaS license agreement that includes the mobile component, basically saying (1) they'll own the data they collect and (2) we're not liable for anything and (3) they can only use the mobile app and website during the subscription period?

The contract isn't for enough money to justify getting an attorney involved, but it's something we'll need going forward anyway.

Thanks.

Tac

Re: [dcphp-dev] Regarding policy on betas

Agreed. I think as long as it's PHP or web dev-related (but maybe not a new Ruby On Rails component), it's fair game for the list.

[dcphp-dev] Re: Operational question

You should cross-post your question on both Quora.com and in the DC Tech group on Facebook.  Both should net you a good response.  One option, though it is Rails based, is Redmine - I have used it and had good experiences with it.  It is open source and has a ton of plugins  that might be an alternative to basecamp.  I recall Keith Casey having worked on dot Project so that might be another option to check out.

As some of you might know I've been working as a freelancer/contractor for the last decade or so. I've been asked by a private design company to help them update their workflow and their general development process.  A little background, they are primarily a design shop that all of a sudden is seeing a increase in demand for digital work. They have in house capabilities to build drupal, wordpress and php sites, but right now everything is fast and loose. Typically the project manager handles the requirements/discovery which are then passed along to the developers and designers concurrently so that a proper divide and conquer approach can be applied to development.

The development follows the typical 3 stage process, develop locally on a virtual machine which is then uploaded to the dev server where qa happens before being deployed. I know this is a broad question but I know there's certain things that need to be set up for them. Such a code repository which ideally I'll have them back up weekly off site, also some centralized project management like basecamp as well as bug tracking/trouble ticket system.

There's a weekly check in meeting which seems to work, it's a small shop (8 people/ 2 devs) so implementing an agile methodology would be overkill and eat up way too much time.

What other must haves as far as software or practices would you recommend, and any other gotchas ideas as far improving designer / developer dialogue?

I want to give a preemptive thank you for all and any responses.

[dcphp-dev] Meeting tonight: FPDF

Howdy all--

Just a reminder that we're going to hear from Jeremy Curcio tonight on using the FPDF library.

We'll have a slightly different format tonight. At the beginning, we'll have an official (instead of our previous unofficial) mingling time from 7-7:30. Please still aim for 7PM if you're driving, because it takes every bit of 30 minutes to find a parking space there nowadays. We'll still have a who's hiring/who's looking at the end, but announcements will be on a slide deck rotating during the mingling time.

Look forward to seeing you there!

-Sandy

Re: [dcphp-dev] Urgent Requirement for Perl / PHP developers ,Lake Forest, IL , 6-12 months

Shouldn't it have a [job] in the subject, per list conventions? Methinks
someone didn't have their full cup of coffee before moderating incoming
messages. We don't get a ton of stuff like this, so when the occasional
one gets through our volunteer ban hammer wielder its not a big deal.
