[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Sunday: Dharma @ The Potter's House

Hi friends,

As I have come to understand the teachings in the Pali Canon, the Buddha offered a way of observing and relating to experience that frees the mind from all forms of suffering - anguish, despair, longing, craving, hatred, and anxiety to name a few. My intention this week is to share some of the teachings on suffering so that we might all see through the patterns that perpetuate it. We will also practice meditation so that we might apply these teachings to our lived experience.

If this aligns with your intentions, please join us from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM in the Community Room at the back of the Potter's House Cafe, located at 1658 Columbia Rd. The space is wheelchair accessible. Chairs and some meditation cushions will be available, but please feel free to bring your own gear if you'd like.

I hope to see you then!

With love,

Devin

Your December 2018 Mission Insider Newsletter is here!

December 2018
On Behalf of Mission of Love Charities, Inc. we hope everyone had a great Holiday. December has been a very busy month for our organization. On December 19, 2019 we welcomed BJ's employees who showed what volunteerism is all about, they filled our pantry, helped us sorting, bagged the toys and helped us clean our warehouse in preparation to our big Toy Shop event to be held the next day. Thank you BJ's for allowing us to serve more clients in need!

On December 20, 2018 we were able to provide Food Baskets to 148 families, had 354 toy registrations and 25 toy/turkey walk-ins. Our Santa took pictures with the kids (and adults as well) and once again we were able to meet our goal to provide more than 350 toys to low income households. We gave slightly used donated toys to the kids that attended the event hoping that the toys the parents were picking up for them would be under their trees on Christmas Day. During this event we also provided SNAP Outreach education to households and we had a special table with information about Food Stamp benefits and about the Together Program for couples.

Our first Holiday Teen Girl Shop event welcomed 17 teenagers (out of 37 pre-registered) who were able to get new outfits including jewelry, shoes and accessories for this Holiday. Thank you Francesca's Boutique for donating the clothing and accessories and Southern Management for providing the food for this event.

We honored our Staff and most loyal Volunteers on December 21, 2018 during our Holiday Breakfast in order to thank them for their hard work during the year.

Please click on the pictures below to see more pictures. Please note we add pictures of all our events at our web site under Galleries.

On December 21, 2018 we honored our staff and loyal volunteers at a Breakfast. We would not be able to provide the programs and services to our clients without the commitment and hard work of our Staff and Volunteers. Thank you so much for your hard work and commitment.

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] This Sunday @ The Potter's House

Dear friends,

We will be meeting this Sunday at the Potter's House from 6:00 - 7:30 PM to meditate, contemplate, and connect. The theme of this week will be impermanence. More specifically, we will be looking at how the mind creates and recreates the world moment by moment, and how understanding this can lead to a deep and abiding peace.

The Potter's House is located at 1658 Columbia Rd NW and we will gather in the community room behind the cafe. The space is wheelchair accessible.  We will provide chairs, but please feel free to bring any sitting gear that you prefer.

I hope to see you then!

With love,

Devin

Hi there. I cannot make it tonight. But will you be meeting next Sunday?  Are Sunday evenings your regular meeting time?  I'd like to get reconnected with the group. Thanks, Anne

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] This Sunday Evening at the Potter's House: Comes the Night - Gifts and Risks of the Winter Dark

Greetings Friends,

Please join us this Sunday, December 9, from 6:00 pm to 7:30 in the Community Room at the Potter's House (1658 Columbia Rd NW).

We'll begin as always with an opening 25-30 minute meditation practice in community followed by short introductions. With the winter solstice on its way, we'll open up to an exploration of the night. What do we miss when we place so much emphasis on the "light" side of life when fully half our lives are spent in the dark? What gifts and dangers await us when we willingly proceed into mystery and the velvety night? How can our mindfulness practice guide and support the transformations that perhaps only happen in the depth of silence?

Chairs are available. If you'd like to bring your own sitting gear, please do. And if you'd like to help set up, please arrive ten to fifteen minutes early. This meeting space is wheelchair accessible.

I look forward to being in Sangha with you this Sunday.

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Film Screening and Discussion This Saturday: Animals & the Buddha: Awakening Compassion for All Beings

On the evening of Saturday, December 8 at the Center for Mindful Living, we will come together to shine the light of the Dharma on our relationship with animals.  Please join us for a screening of the film "Animals and the Buddha: Awakening Compassion for All Beings", directed by acclaimed documentary filmmaker Keegan Kuhn ("Cowspiracy", "What the Health"), to raise awareness and reflect upon the practice of extending active compassion to all animals, particularly the animals we might typically forget about.

After the film, Kristin Barker, IMCW teacher and founder of One Earth Sangha, and Alexandra Arbogast, meditation teacher in training and leader of the local local Dharma Voices for Animals chapter, will lead a discussion of the film.

Some delicious and healthy plant-based food will be served to give participants a first-hand experience of one of the most powerful and positive steps they can take to reduce the suffering of sentient beings, improve health, and respond to climate change.

Suggested donation of $10 is appreciated to cover costs. All proceeds benefit Dharma Voices for Animals and the work of spreading compassion for animals. We regret that this venue is not accessible for those with mobility impairments.

Location: IMCW Center for Mindful Living, (4708 Wisconsin Avenue, NW, Upper floor, Tenleytown, Washington DC, 20016) (Map It)
Time: 6:30 PM 9:00 PM ; Doors open at 6:00 PM

We hope you can join us!

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Following up from Sunday

Downtown Dharma Sangha, it was such a pleasure to join you Sunday night. As promised, here are some follow ups with resources we discussed and my contact info:

I mis-attributed the quotes I gave on ways to think of anger (specifically the horn on our head and nose on our face) to a monk from the Tich Naht Hahn tradition. (!!) It's actually from teachings by Thubten Chodron - whom I first learned about because of her incredible role in revitalizing the order of nuns in the Tibetan tradition- see Guided Meditations on the Stages of the Path by Thubten Chodron and this excerpt  and this transcript of a talk.

I did not have time to share the story, but check out The Places That Scare You (story p 70-71) by Pema Chodron.

Lastly, for some practice, here's a great Tara Brach Talk on Anger.

My information: This email or em.pastpresenceforward@gmail.com, and my website is www.pastpresenceforward.com

With gratitude,
Em
