[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Sublet available in March -- great room & price!

Hello everyone -- I attend the Sunday meditations at All Souls and Buddha Brunches with varied regularity, and know many of you. I am leaving the country in a couple weeks, and the subletter I had set up just fell through. So, I am now trying to sublet my room in my house on very short notice! So, I am hoping I might be able to find someone through this network (or your networks). Please see below for more information, and please feel free to contact me directly at stephanie.randall@gmail.com, or 303-579-3942, if you are interested. Please also feel free to forward this onto anyone else you know who might be looking for a sublet.

Many, many thanks!!!

Warmly,
Stephanie

Mount Pleasant Sublet: March 11 - April 30 (potentially move in earlier / extend to June)

The house: Our house is a gorgeous 100-year-old rowhouse in Mount Pleasant. It is spacious and open, with hardwood floors, colorful rooms, a bathroom on each floor and lots of shared living space for everyone's use (living room, dining room, foyer with bike storage space, sunroom, front porch). We also have a washer and dryer, good-sized backyard with garden and fire pit, and a small rooftop area. We’re in an excellent location -- very close to bus lines and Metro, restaurants, bars, grocery stores and local co-op, a Capital Bikeshare station, and Rock Creek Park.

The room: The room being sublet is on the second floor, is medium-sized, and has a good-sized closet and a tall window overlooking the backyard. Room is heated by radiator (which you can adjust), and also has a ceiling fan and window A/C unit. The walls are painted a warm terra cotta color. The room will be sublet furnished, with a queen-sized bed, dresser, closet, desk, etc. all for your use. I can also clear space on my bookshelves and offer some additional storage space if you need -- I am happy to be flexible to make sure you have the space you need! You'll share a bathroom with the two other housemates on the second floor.

The housemates: The current housemates are all professionals (3 female and 3 male) in their mid-twenties to early thirties. All have independent lives and somewhat different schedules, but get along well and enjoy having occasional house dinners and parties. We're a friendly group and enjoy cooking, live music, the outdoors, exploring DC, biking and traveling. As it's a large house (3 floors and full basement apartment), the house never feels crowded, as the housemates are seldom all home at the same time. All are attentive to keeping the house tidy and welcoming -- it's a great place to live!

Rent/Logistics: Since March is a partial month, it will be $600. April will be $750. This includes rent and all utilities (water, gas, electricity, WiFi and basic cable). There is a possibility that the sublease will be extended beyond 4/30 -- please let me know if you might be interested in this. We are available to show the room & house evenings this week -- if you are interested, please email me at stephanie.randall@gmail.com, or call/text me at 303-579-3942.

Thanks so much for reading, and please feel free to forward this to anyone else who might be interested, too!

Best,

Stephanie

By the way, Maven Central has 260,000 artifacts and serves 70 millions downloads every week (http://blog.sonatype.com/2010/12/now-available-central-download-statistics-for-oss-projects/).  Packagist.org has 142 million packages (24,492 packages with 87,349 versions) and about 160 million downloads a month (https://packagist.org/statistics).

Hello everyone,

Will anyone else be attending Hugh Byrne's 5:30 to 9:00 pm workshop
this Saturday night? These retreats are a great oasis. It might me
nice to meet for tea beforehand.

Registration site: https://clients.mindbodyonline.com/ASP/home.asp?studioid=736

Description: "Awakening to Peace Through Mindfulness Meditation with
Hugh Byrne: Insight or Mindfulness Meditation is the simple practice
of paying attention on a moment-to-moment basis to our own direct
experience. This practice of mindfulness allows us to see more clearly
our patterns and habits of holding and resistance, and to accept more
fully the pleasure and pain, fear and joy, sadness and happiness that
occur in life. As our insights deepen, we develop greater peace and
equanimity in the face of change, and wisdom and compassion
increasingly become the guiding force in our lives.

These monthly half-day "immersions" are ably led by Dr. Hugh Byrne,
and are open to new and experienced practitioners.

During the immersion we will alternate periods of instruction,
practice sitting and walking meditations and have dialogue. Reserve
your space bring a friend!"

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Re: Volunteer opportunities with the Sangha - Loaves and Fishes

The date for our volunteer opportunity with Loaves and Fishes has changed.  We will now volunteer on Sunday, March 16, from 11-2pm (instead of Sat. March 22).  If you would like to participate, please email me at danya.greenfield@gmail.com - even if you initially RSVPd for the first date, please reconfirm if you are able to join for March 16 - apologies for the change.

Loaves and Fishes addresses the issue of homelessness and poverty by providing meals to hungry and needy individuals. http://loavesandfishesdc.org/.   It is located at St. Stephen's Church at 1525 Newton St, NW DC.

They provide weekly volunteer opportunities, and I've signed us up for two dates: Sunday March 16 and Sunday May 18 from 11am-2pm.  We will help set up the dining room and then serve meals: the work is primarily plating and serving food, restaurant style to each seated guest.  We can come with a group as large as 15 people; I'll take volunteers on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Danya

Some Background information about Loaves and Fishes:

Loaves and Fishes began as an outgrowth of St. Stephen and the Incarnation Episcopal Church's practice in the mid-1960s of providing meals after Sunday services. When hungry nonchurchgoers began to appear in considerable numbers, the congregation launched a meals ministry and named the program Loaves and Fishes after the miracle described in the gospels. As Loaves and Fishes grew, other churches stepped in to help. We are now sustained by a partnership with 11 other churches, many of them in the suburbs, and diverse foundations, community groups, and individuals.

Our mission and goals are two-fold: to feed the hungry in our community and to educate volunteers and community members about hunger and homelessness. We are proud to serve a warm, healthy lunch to all who come to us without regard to their age, race, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, religious affiliation, or lack of it. We invite you to join us, as a guest, volunteer, or financial supporter. Meals are available around noon on weekends and federal holidays at St. Stephen and the Incarnation Church:

Dear fellow sangha friends,

The topic of our last buddha brunch was "engaged Buddhism", and while we talked a lot about how to translate mindfulness practices into our work life and day-to-day experiences, we also agreed that an important way to carry the idea of lovingkindness and compassion into the world would be to engage in volunteer work together as a sangha.

We discussed wanting to do a service-oriented project (not something political) and to be involved with the local community right around the sangha and where many of us live.  I've found a good opportunity volunteering with Loaves and Fishes, which addresses the issue of homelessness and poverty by providing meals to hungry and needy individuals. http://loavesandfishesdc.org/.   It is located at St. Stephen's Church at 1525 Newton St, NW DC.

[dcphp-dev] Re: Being a programmer at 55

Great post, Oscar.  I agree with a lot of what TheCodist wrote.  Sometimes I work longer when I am in the zone, and sometimes the chain pointers just won't hang together, so I go play with the dog.  And today I never underestimate the value of sleep to the logical/creative process!

Mostly the biggest difference that has come with age is learning the software funhouse of PHP and finally being smart enough to amass a teaching library of examples.  It really doesn't do me any good to remember all the nuances of an email pipe or a cURL post request, but on the occasions when I need the knowledge, I can go back to my well-documented example, with all of the comments that explained the key points.  A consequence of this discipline has been that I can address all of the small challenges much faster than I could have when I worked in older programming languages, where I did not keep detailed notes and well-commented examples.  And as we all know, the larger challenges are made up of small challenges.  My PHP library gives me the time I need to concentrate on other things that I'm not so good at, because I know I'll be able to blow through the PHP part of things.

If I could give one bit of advice to any new programmer it would be, "Slow down, save your work, write good comments, and come back to it in a month (whether you need to or not) to see if the comments still make sense."  If I could give one bit of advice to any new programming team it would be, "Work together, collaborate, develop consensus around every difficult issue, then come back to it in a month and see if the decisions still make sense."  I worked for a while with a young man who measured his life by the number of commits.  He would work in isolation late into the night (sometimes into the morning) and when he came to the daily stand-up he was so sleep deprived that he couldn't explain what he had done the night before.  So we had to start reading his code in order to try to figure it out.  Invariably it was sparsely commented and often had the code smell of a self-absorbed thought process.  I never tried to prove it, but I harbored the idea that his contribution to the project was actually a net minus because of all the team time lost trying to understand what he was doing.  No doubt he was a brilliant problem solver at the algorithmic level.  I wonder how much more effective our team might have been if he had been more of a team player, more reflective and better able to express his ideas in natural language.  I am sure the team could have learned a lot from him.

Does it really take 10,000 hours to achieve proficiency?  Maybe not.  Maybe it takes 10,000 challenges.  It's interesting to try to handle the "help desk" activities for a while.  Deal with other people's problems.  It will teach you a lot about your own thought processes.  A good way to do this is tackle questions on Experts-Exchange or StackOverflow.  If you accept one challenge a day with your morning coffee, in a year you will have wrestled down a couple of hundred problems.  You'll have done some well and some not so well, but it will have given you a variety of interesting questions and it's a great way to get a head start on the teaching library.
