- Please bring your own cushion, mat, bench, blankets, etc for sitting if you would like… we have a limited number to share.

- There will be an hour and a half lunch break, during which we will also hold silence.  We suggest you bring your own lunch.

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Buddha Brunch - Saturday, March 19th, 11am - 1pm

I'm going to host a Buddha Brunch in honor of the Spring Equinox on March 19th which happens at 12:30am on the next day (in the middle of the night so not good timing for the actual brunch)!  We'll gather on Saturday, from 11am - 1pm, at my apartment in Columbia Heights (one block south of the Columbia Heights metro)

Joining me in hosting will be Rebecca Ratner and Amy Dona who will facilitate the discussion on a reading which we will circulate to those who will be attending.  Reading and discussion will be related to spring, awakening and possibilities.

In addition to the discussion, and a short meditation, we will join together for a potluck brunch.

If you'd like to join, please email me at DRiebman@hotmail.com.  Between chairs, couches and the floor, I should be able to host up to about 10-15 people.  I'll send the reading and directions to my apartment to those who are coming.

Spring is on its way!

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] In Search of Housesitting/ Housing Opportunities

Hello Dhamma Friends,

I have recently returned to DC from Thailand, where I have been practicing at a Buddhist monastery in the northeast, and will be resettling in the DC area for a short while as I tend to medical issues.   In the meantime, I am searching for a housesitting option for 3-4 months, or a housing opportunity in exchange for 10-12 hours of work per week, either cleaning, cooking, pet-sitting, organizing--all given with a generous spirit and loving heart, as well as interesting stories about my time at the monastery. :-)

I am very quiet, clean, and respectful, and would ideally like the same in a home environment, and would love to live with other meditators.  Either Maryland, Virginia, or DC would work, as long as it is within walking distance to a metro station.

Thank you so much for circulating this among your friends/ circles and posting on any listservs you might be a part of.  I look forward to seeing you all soon.  :-)

With metta and a deep bow.

Brandi

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Re: Spirit Rock Spring Retreat at Joshua tree CA car pool

Hi All,

It was pointed out that I should probably clarify: I was thinking in
terms of carpooling from an airport in CA to the retreat center (though air
travel is getting to be so constricting, driving would almost be an
intriguing option if I had the leave from work to burn). :P

Best and stay warm!

Re: [dcphp-dev] Hosting is good until it becomes bad...

When I researched full service hosting a few years ago, I settled on Servint.net and loved it. Lots of help even with stupid little things and really easy to get humans in multiple ways for assistance. Let me know if you go with them.

I'm currently using a shared hosting solution that is a rather good deal, though SSH is extra and I do not currently have that option turned on.

Anyway, if you'd like to check them out: http://iclickandhost.com/

They also offer earlier version. As far as I can tell, it's per account, but you can hotswap at any time through the control panel.

RE: [dcphp-dev] Hosting is good until it becomes bad...

It may be expensive for personal hosting, but we use Blackmesh. I can heartily recommend them, and their support is awesome. (Their sponsorship of everything PHP doesn't hurt, either.) They understand Drupal very well, and I recently put in a ticket to upgrade our dev server to PHP7 while keeping an eye on a particular Drupal site. In short order, it was up and running with little intervention on my part.

If you are comfortable with Linux and want a high degree of control (as in pick your distro and build from there), I'd recommend Linode. http://linode.com/. Full control of an SSD-backed instance, with great pricing. The offering is similar to Digital Ocean (who pretty much cloned their branding) but in my experience performs a lot better for the same price.

Hello Ray,
I am using Superb Internet Hosting.  The package is called Grid Iron.  Here is the URL: http://www.superb.net/web-hosting/benefits.
The GridPRO and GridMAX include access logs, at least from the description.  Support is very good, and you should be able to get some information from them about error logs pretty quick.
For example I had them install a new VPC with an updated PHP so that I could use a more recent media wiki and they did not have a problem with that.

Ask them about PHP requirements too.  I am running PHP 5 .4 so I could not run Drupal 8, but they can update your PHP.
Let me know if you chose Superb.
Regards,
Michael

Regards,

Michael

Any recommendations or outfits to avoid?  Thanks, Ray

If you're comfortable with the full systems-admin role, I highly recommend AWS. I use it for most of my clients, and the billing model is nice for experimentation.

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Employment Opportunity at the Southern Dharma Retreat Center

Dear Fellow Seekers of the Dharma,

Passing along a residential job opening at Southern Dharma, a residential retreat center near Asheville, NC. I have attended retreats there and our very own Hugh Byrne teaches retreats there. They have offered retreats since the late 1970s. They only allude to it in the note below, but there is also a dedicated practice community beside the retreat center.

See below for details or pass them along to anyone who may be.

Metta,
Paul

Southern Dharma Retreat Center Seeks a Buildings & Grounds Manager

This is a full-time resident position with room and board (private, detached housing; vegetarian cuisine) for a single person. Benefits include group health insurance with monthly employer contributions to a personal health savings account, paid vacation and holiday time, and wireless internet service. Beginning salary is $1,400-1,500/month.

The position opening provides the right person a rare opportunity to live and work at a remote, nationally recognized, silent Buddhist retreat center in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina. (Southern Dharma is located 35 miles northwest of Asheville, 12 miles south of the town of Hot Springs.)

The Buildings & Grounds Manager is one of a staff of four full-time employees comprising Southern Dharma's resident community. (In addition to the Buildings & Grounds Manager, the resident staff is comprised of the Director, the Retreat Manager, and the Kitchen Manager.) Short-term Resident Volunteers assist the staff in day-to-day operations.

Southern Dharma is a nonprofit organization governed by a volunteer board of directors. The center hosts approximately 25 teacher-led retreats each year with approximately 25 guests participating in each retreat.

The Buildings & Grounds Manager is responsible for maintaining and developing the center's infrastructure in consultation with the Director. Applicants for the position must be: pragmatic; physically healthy and strong; adept at working with a variety of hand and power tools; comfortable supervising independent contractors, vendors, and volunteers; drug and alcohol free; friendly with retreat guests; experienced with a personal meditation practice; conscientious and dedicated; effective communicators; enthusiastic, personable, and sincere; good team players.

A comprehensive job description, annual work schedule, and schedule of periodic tasks associated with the position are available upon request.

Applications will be considered until the position is filled. The starting date will be as soon as possible by mutual arrangement.

Interested persons are invited to forward questions, letters of interest, resumes, and references to: Director, SCRC, southerndharma@earthlink.netNo phone calls, please.

[dcphp-dev] Quick reminder - Meeting on Wednesday!

Hey, gang! This is just a quick reminder that our monthly meetup is this Wednesday (Feb 10th) at Canvas Co-Work at 6:30 PM.

Andrew Cassell will be talking to us about managing project dependencies with Composer and Satis, so bring your questions! Afterwards we'll have announcements (and maybe a door prize or two, working on it! ;)

Once again, there will be pizzas (please let me know if you have any food prefs or dietary needs and I'll do my best to accommodate!). As usual, come up to 3R in the elevator and if you have any trouble getting in, please give me a call at (571) 276-4051

Can't wait to see you all there! :D

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Re: Metta practice next Sunday at 4 pm (near the Dupont sangha venue)

Thanks Rebecca for doing this again.  It was a great time last year.  I will be out of town on work travel the next couple of weeks, so miss it, but I hope it turns out great again!

Best to all,

Lou
