[Downtown Dharma Listserve] [Downtown Dharma Listserv] Reading Group: Next Meeting - Sat Dec 11

Hi friends,

The next gathering for the Downtown Dharma reading group will be on Saturday, December 11 from 6-7:30pm. There are two shorter articles for this reading group: "The Mindfulness Conspiracy" by Ronald Purser, published in the Guardian (podcast version here), and a reply/rebuttal by the Centre for Mindfulness Studies.

Diane and I will be hosting the in-person meetup at our apartment: 2122 Massachusetts Ave NW, Apt 712. Feel free to show up early at 5:45 if you want to chat and snack before the book club starts. We ask that folks only come in person if they've been fully vaccinated.

If you are attending in-person, please send me a message to let me know! I'll pass along my phone number so you can call me when you're here and let you in.

If you'll be joining online, Zoom info is below:

Cheers,
Nate

Re: [Downtown Dharma Listserve] This Sunday *Engaged* Dharma Talk!

Hi friends,

I wanted to follow up on Ali's email to say that I am really grateful that she will be joining us this week and to reiterate that if you haven't yet submitted your proof of vaccination please do so ahead of time. It makes things significantly easier for the volunteers. Proof of vax can be sent to: yogadc@yogadistrict.com

And if you have the chance, please also remember to sign in ahead of time each week on the yoga district website. As with the above, it helps everything run more smoothly.

With love,

Devin

Dear friends,

I am thrilled to be the guest teacher this week! I am the founder/facilitator of the Vegan Sangha, an affinity group through IMCW. I will be offering an engaged dharma talk called "Eating with Conscience as a Spiritual Path." I will share about the ripple effect of our consumption of animal-based foods, the positive effects of moving in the direction of more plant-based eating, and how this topic overlaps with our practice of the Dharma.  I have attached the Vegan Sangha resources handout to support your continued learning and growth around this topic.

We will gather this Sunday, Nov. 28, from 7:00-8:30 PM both in person at the Yoga District studio at 1910 14th St. NW and online. Details for attending in person or online are at the bottom of this email. Please register ahead of time at the Yoga District site if you plan to join in person. If you'll be online, please note the addition of a passcode (546447).

For the benefit of all beings!

Peace,

Alexandra Arbogast

Attending In Person

If you would like to come in person, you will need to register with the studio and submit proof of vaccination. You will also need to wear a mask. For everyone's safety and for the viability of this offering, these requirements are not negotiable. You can register through the Yoga District scheduling site, and you can submit proof of vaccination to yogadc@yogadistrict.com or present it in-person at the studio. We ask everyone to register and submit proof of vaccination ahead of time so that we don't have long delays when we all get together.

We also ask that you try to come 10 minutes early – around 6:50. This will give us time to check folks in and acclimate to what is still a new space and process for most of us. Please note that the class is held on the 3rd floor, up two flights of stairs. There are rugs, bolsters and folding chairs for seating. Please also note that we will be staffing these events ourselves so there will be no-one at the desk to admit latecomers. The doors will be closed and locked at 7:10 and no one will be admitted after that.

Dear Sangha members,

We had a wonderful retreat last weekend, November 20-21st. For those of you who couldn't join, I'm hoping that the poem pasted below and attached as a pdf will give you a taste of the love we shared and inspire you to join us next retreat!! I led us in a practice of creative contemplation (a twist on Lectio Divina) where we took turns reading aloud a contemporary poem in which each line begins with "I love..."  After which we meditated on it, and then spent 15 minutes composing our own lines, some of which we then shared aloud.

What you see below is a selection and arrangement of some of the lines written by those who participated. Please enjoy our love poem for Downtown Dharma and have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

With love,

Brandel

Downtown Dharma Love Poem

                                                                          (after Alex Dimitrov)

I love that elephants listen with their feet.

I love sharing a park with children—but not getting too close to them.

I love screaming underwater.

I love when someone notices there's something different about you.

I love old Halloween candy.

I love that each star is really a sun. And if that's not actually true, I love thinking it.

I love it when stains come out in the wash.

I love learning to live with stains.

I love the anticipatory buzz of stepping out for the first time in a foreign city.

I love the feeling of being ready for an excursion.

I love the exhaustion of being finished with an excursion.

I love how some primal part of me recognizes the sea as home, and I love that we were all once fish.

I love when the yoga instructor does hands-on assist in shavasana.

I love that we share 92% of our DNA with fruit flies.

I love that word for the mass movement of thousands of birds: a murmuration?

I love when I can take my time.

I love how moss turns a deeper shade of green after a rainfall.

I love salty then sweet, then salty then sweet.

I love the dharma, which is sometimes sad, often true, and all the people who practice it.

I love the fact that earthworms poop as much as they do.

I love that I will never be able to read all the novels in the world.

I love that writing is so slow and arduous for me but that I can really get in the flow once I actually get started.

I love hardwood floors.

I love it when people drive by with their windows down, stereo turned up to max—even when the bass shakes me. Especially when the bass shakes me.

I love people who are earnest.

I love it when a dinner party guest shows up with doughnuts.

I love introducing two people I love to each other.

I love subtly breaking social conventions—so subtly that people are confused rather than flabbergasted.

I love finding a cheesecake in the community fridge.

I love watching TV in a hotel room.

I love dancing by myself when I find an empty, open space.

I love that government employees (or their contractors) sweep the leaves and mow the lawns of the parks that serve as my unofficial backyard.

I love wrinkles.

I love how, because of computers, my handwriting has degraded over time.

I love the excitement of a new formulation of dark chocolate.

I love linen sheets, high-thread counts, but not what it says about me.

I love looking straight up as snowflakes fall.

I love when siblings or best friends have similar mannerisms.

I love how my dad gets me an annual subscription to the New Yorker twice a year so they'll last even after he dies.

I love how life can give as many second chances as we are willing to bear.

I love that there is so much to love.
