[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Next DD Book Group: Saturday, May 7 from 6-7:30 pm in Logan Circle (Viktor Frankl's Man's Search for Meaning)

Hello, bookish friends!

I will be hosting our next gathering: on Saturday, May 7th from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm. For those of you who prefer to join on Zoom, here is the Zoom link

We agreed that we would read at least the first half of Viktor Frankl's Man's Search for Meaning (I'm hoping to read the whole thing: the second half is about Logotherapy or using life purpose for therapy). I think it's safe to say that Part I, Experiences in a Concentration Camp, is well under 100 pages, no matter the edition. As always, you're welcome to come even if you haven't finished the first part, or read any of the book!

A warning: my living room is very small; we will be tight, sitting in close proximity (with a window or door open), so I ask that you please be fully vaccinated and boosted. Masks will be optional. PLEASE RSVP.

I'll have some light snacks and beverages on hand but you're welcome to bring anything you have a hankering for.

I live at 1515 15th Street (between P and Church) in the Logan Circle neighborhood. My unit is #433.

HOW TO GET IN: When you get to the building, use the arrows on the exterior buzzer on the right-hand side to get to "F" as my last name is "France de Bravo." It will ring me and I'll buzz you into the lobby. Once in the lobby,  the concierge will key you into the elevator. Tell them you are visiting Brandel France de Bravo in #433. Once on the 4th floor, you'll exit left. Our unit is on the left-hand side. If for some reason no concierge is on hand, kindly call me on my phone at 202-297-8676. I or my husband, Mario, will come down to escort you up. Sorry for any inconvenience!

I look forward to hosting you, and to a lively discussion.

Warmly,

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] An Evening with Downtown Dharma Sangha: A Vision for Sangha

Downtown-Dharma.jpg
                 A Vision for Sangha.

Downtown Dharma Sangha
DATE:
5/1/2022 TIME: 7:00 - 8:30 PM
Location:
  • In-person:1910 14th Street NW, 3rd Floor, Washington, DC 20009
  • Online: Zoom ID: Zoom Link
Facilitator: Travis M. Spencer
Mindful Helper: Elicia Renee Wright

This Sunday's topic and practice is a continuation of our Mindful Living Series

Our gathering will be an opportunity to participate in a heart-centered practice of listening and sharing with one another.
Sangha is essential to Mindful Living and our desire to awaken together. During our time together we will explore the following question: How do we envision sangha supporting our individual and collective awakening?
Additionally, I will share a vision for Downtown Dharma Sangha that will support the collective awakening of our community.

When we speak of the sangha, we speak of the "arya sangha," which means the "exalted sangha". At the time of the Buddha, this referred to the arhats and bodhisattvas, the disciples who studied under him and achieved various levels of realization through their practice. But now who is the arya sangha? It is all of us, all of the practitioners of the present time. The moment we take refuge, which is to begin on the path, we hold the title of "sangha". As such, you should understand that you are one of the Three Jewels. You shouldn't put the Three Jewels outside of yourselves; you should always think of yourselves as being one of the Three Jewels—and that includes your body, your speech, and your mind.― Dhomang Yangthang, The Union of Dzogchen and Mahamudra

Upcoming events and new programs 💙

Hello Friends and Supporters of Mission of Love Charities:

Finally, with the arrival of Spring, we can celebrate the coming out and coming up with all warmer temperatures and lovely blossoms.

Special Events

There will be several special events on Saturdays in the weeks to come. All events are at the MOLC facility at 6180 Old Central Ave., in Capitol Heights, Maryland.

On Saturday, April 16, Mission of Love Charities hosted the Celebration of Easter. This was a special day for the children in our community. Children gathered to make and decorate Easter baskets and greeting cards.

On Saturday, May 7, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., Mission of Love Charities will celebrate Mother’s Day with a special day for Moms. Bring Mom to the Mission of Love Charities facility, and there will be free haircuts, free facials and free gifts.

Job Training Programs

Mission of Love Charities continues with its enhanced commitment to its Workforce Development, Education and Job Training program – with the launching of several new programs to help people get back on their feet economically and become self-sustaining with employment.

Perhaps the most extensive new training module being presented by MOLC are the courses in OSHA Construction Inspection, which will start in this month. Specifically, the OSHA-focused training module will focus on the following areas: Permit Required Confined Space, OSHA Recordkeeping, Hazard Communications, Electrical Safety with Lockout/Tagout, Silica Exposure, Machine Guarding, Fall Protection with Ladder Safety, Personal Protective Equipment, Powered Industrial Trucks, and Hot Works.

Additionally, MOLC’s Job Training programs continue with multi-week courses in Employee Readiness, Event & Meeting Planning Bootcamp and the Certified Nursing Assistant/Geriatric Nursing Assistant Training Program. All of these courses have produced graduates in sessions since the beginning of 2021. The demand for these courses far outstrips the capacity to meet that demand.

Starting in June, MOLC will offer a STEM Pipeline Initiative for students in grades 6-12. The session will be offered with two options: either Saturdays from 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. or weekdays 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Each session will have eight workshops. The goal of this Initiative will be to create a learning environment that ensures that students can adapt to the mindset and skills required in the next generation of STEM workers.

Also starting in June, MOLC is offering a Job Readiness Training Workshop for high school graduates. The sessions will be offered with two options: weekdays 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. or Saturdays 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. The weekday sessions will start with a Saturday orientation and then be held 13 days, Monday through Thursday. The Saturday session will be held 8 consecutive Saturdays. The goal of this initiative is to provide opportunities to young adults and their families to acquire the skills needs for employment success.

Progress on Work to Rebuild, Renovate and Repurpose School Building Across the Street

Mission of Love Charities continues with its work to renovate the old Lyndon Hill school building across the street from its current facility to create a new and expanded facility for its operations with a focus on Workforce Development.

In 2020 the Redevelopment Authority of Prince George’s County granted a long-term lease to MOLC for the building, located at 6181 Old Central Ave., for $1 per year. The new facility promises to deliver increased space for all MOLC operations, with an emphasis on classrooms and other space for Workforce Development, Education, and Job Training courses.

Untitled design _5_.png

While the project is projected to cost about $4 million, MOLC is working with its board members and other friends to secure bond financing, while also negotiating with developers who may use part of the facility for senior housing accommodations. While none of these initiatives are finalized, they do promise to make the financing of the project doable.

Increased Demand for Basic Needs Of Food, SNAP and Financial Assistance for Housing

The economic effects of the pandemic have been particularly severe for many individuals and families who were living on the margin before the pandemic, and while the pandemic has surged and subsided over the last months, the negative impact of the pandemic on these people persists and perhaps is increasing.

Specifically, in recent weeks MOLC has seen a 30% increase in the number of individuals, families, and children who need food, help with SNAP (Food Stamps) applications, and financial assistance to pay rent and utilities. Helping these needy people remains a priority for MOLC, and it is only able to provide this assistance with the financial help of government agencies, foundations, corporations, and individuals. Serving these desperately needy people and their families is one of the most humbling experiences for the staff of MOLC.

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Metta Bike Ride 🚲

Hey my people,

Would you like to come on a Metta bike ride tomorrow? I loved the one Vince hosted at the fall retreat.

The premise is this: We do some metta meditation together and then go on a bike ride and silently wish the things we see "may you be well." It could be people, plants, or animals, whatever.

Plan to meet tomorrow, 4/16 at 10:30am in Ledroit Park and make our way from there to Haines point but open to suggestions. 5 miles or so at an easy pace. With stops for snacks.

Let me know if you'd like to come or if you have any questions.

With love,
Rachel

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Spots available for meditation retreat next week!

Hi everyone!

I hope you all are well.

I'm reaching out because there are a few spots that have become available for a meditation retreat I am helping organize next week, and I'm hoping that you or someone you know might want to participate. The retreat is organized by Dharma Gates, a non profit organization that I work for. Please see below for more information about the retreat including a link to the registration page.
  • The retreat will be 4-days // 3-nights. It will start at 6:30pm Thursday, April 21st and finish at 2:00pm on Sunday April 24th.
  • Location: A ~90 min drive from DC at a retreat center called Claymont Society (note: there will be ride-shares organized if you do not have a vehicle!)
  • Led by a wonderful Dharma teacher named Ayya Dhammadīpā. Ayya is a 'dual-lineage' teacher, ordained in both the Theravada and Soto Zen lineages.
  • Theme: The 5 Aggregates - the body and four aspects of mind as they are described in the teachings of early Buddhism.
Other questions you might have:
  • Do I need to have meditation retreat experience? Definitely not! For some of the attendees, it will be their first retreat experience.
  • What is the daily schedule like? Please click here and scroll down to see the schedule for the retreat
  • What does it cost? The retreat is run on a donation basis in the spirit of dana, so there is no required attendance fee. You will be asked to give a deposit in order to register, which will be refunded once you arrive at the retreat. At the end of the retreat, you will be invited to give a donation if you would like to.
  • What about dietary needs? The food served at the retreat will be 100% vegan. If you have specific allergies or requests, you will be able to submit those to the retreat center ahead of time. You are welcome to bring personal food items if you need to -- there will be a fridge and personal food storage
I hope you will consider signing up! Here is a link to the registration page on our website with more information and the registration form. If you're a TikTok fan, or if you're not, the teacher Ayya Dhammadipa recorded a TikTok video.

We have 5 spots left before we reach capacity, and we will be closing registration by the end of this week, so we ask that you register as soon as possible. Please pass along this opportunity to any friends that may be interested 🙂

You can reach me at this email or at benjamin@dharma-gates.org with any questions.

With gratitude,
Benjamin // B.I.

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Correction and Request Re: This Sunday's Sangha

Greetings Dear Community,

Correction: After receiving some clarification from IMCW and Yoga District, I'm clarifying here the policy regarding in-person attendance at tonight's gathering.

In-person attendees need to register with the studio and submit proof of boosted vaccination. You will also need to wear a mask. For everyone's safety and for the viability of this offering, these requirements are not negotiable.

You can register through the Yoga District scheduling site, and you can submit proof of vaccination to yogadc@yogadistrict.com or present it in person at the studio. We ask everyone to register and submit proof of vaccination ahead of time so that we don't have long delays when we all get together.

Request: Also, we are in need of volunteers to support the Sangha. If you are able to help with check-ins or offer other support, please contact Kavya. This is a beautiful and important way to support our community.

With appreciation,
Kristin

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Yoga & Meditation Retreat in West Virginia - May 13-15

Dear friends,

After a long absence, I'm happy to announce that I will be guest-teaching the Downtown Dharma sangha on April 17. I look forward to being back with you then to meditate, connect, and explore the dharma.

In other exciting news, I will be teaching alongside a few of my favorite teachers at a Yoga and Meditation Retreat at https://www.buffalogapretreat.com/ in West Virginia from May 13-15. I've included a video of this retreat from past years.

I am really excited for this adult camp of sorts and would love it if you joined us! The retreat co-hosts, Sara Crosby and Tanory Ateek, have made sure to provide a variety of classes, housing options (camping, cabin, hotel), etc., so that every body is nurtured on this weekend retreat. If you are interested in practicing some noble silence at the retreat, you can opt for a shared silent cabin by sending an email to info@endlessom.com with this request.

For more info and to register: www.endlessom.com

In order to be guaranteed a meal plan and to take advantage of the discounted hotel rate, you will need to register by April 13.

Don't hesitate to contact me or the retreat co-hosts (info@endlessom.com) with any questions.

I hope to see you on April 17, at the retreat, and/or another time soon.

Much love,

Linda

Please also note that we will be staffing these events ourselves so there will be no one at the desk to admit latecomers. The doors will be closed and locked at 7:10 and no one will be admitted after that.
