Dear fellow sangha members,

My name is Bennett and I am currently seeking a roommate in mid September or beginning October who values living mindfully. My intention is to also create community by hosting regular meditation sittings and mindful mutuality groups in the home.

Condo includes a private furnished bedroom and private bathroom with shared space privileges at New Providence Village Condo in West Falls Church. Location is in a nice, clean, upscale area. East access to 495/Rt. 50 and I66, and is one block away from the bus stop.

My place is spacious and quiet. Your accommodations include a very comfortable, full size, IKEA bed, and fully stocked private bathroom.

Rent is only $890 a month including all utilities. Utilities include electricity, water, trash, and internet Wi-Fi access. Shared space priviledges (kitchen, living room and dining room.

New Providence Village is a nice, quiet neighborhood with walking trails, friendly people, and a beautiful large pond, resembling a small lake to see for you to enjoy. This neighborhood is conveniently located near many restaurants, supermarkets (Safeway and Giant), stores, such as Target just a few miles away.

Public transportation is available-Bus stop is about 7 to 10 minutes walking distance from my place. Free parking available in the neighborhood.

If interested or if you can spread the word, please contact me at 703-463-6156.

Look forward to hearing from you,

Bennett

Re: [dcphp-dev] Need help with PHP site

I'm with Robyn on this one, which is why I recommended you find someone to consult with to analyze your best and most cost effective solution.

The site may already be a type of CMS, and the admin login and some minor training could be all you need. Or it might be a bunch of faux-dynamic, actually-static files that "need" (but not really) a developer to update. Or it could be even more complex. Without looking at the source code, all anyone on this list can do is speculate, which is of minimal help.

Of course the first course of action might be to work with the original design and development team, assuming that is an option for you.

Debugging Beyond var_dump()

Presented by
AND
Date:September 18, 2015
Time:9:00 AM - 3:00 PM CDT

Gone are the days when var_dump() & die() would show you what was actually going on in your app. When your website was all in single pages, var_dump() was your best friend. With today's advanced frameworks however, you have to have more; you have to have a debugging strategy. Day Camp 4 Developers: Debugging Beyond var_dump() will help you develop that strategy.

We've brought together five experts in various areas to help you understand the tools that are available to you, and the mindset you need to debug your code. Join us on Sept 18th, 2015 for Day Camp 4 Developers: Debugging Beyond var_dump(). Purchase your ticket today.

PHP Profiling, an Introduction

Fabien Potencier
During this session, we will talk about inclusive and exclusive costs, wall time, cpu time, memory, callers, callees, callgraphs, aggregations, comparisons, and then some more. You will learn what profiling is and why it should become part of your daily arsenal. After the theoretical basis of performance analyzes, we will look at the corresponding tools: Xdebug, XHProf, and Blackfire. We'll then see how profiling is not only about performance: when you don't know the inner of an application, looking at call graphs is like seeing through your app – it's a lens on how its internals work. Can you imagine a doctor doing surgery without medical imagery? That's what profiling is for a developer. You shouldn't miss it out.

Debugging: Past, Present and Future

Derick Rethans
In this talk I will go over all the past, present and future debugging techniques. The talk start by giving an overview on PHP's (ancient) standard features for debugging, additional (userland) libraries and functionality in frameworks.

After the introductions we move on to the meatier stuff and I will talk about live-action debuggers, such as Xdebug and Zend's debugger. They both provide information while a script is being executed, in combination with IDEs.

In the future, there is PHP 5.6's phpdbg which allows for some debugging and other analysis. I am also unveiling a project that allows you to "step back" while debugging as well; introspect what your script's or application's exact execution paths was; and trace variable modifications.

Characterization Testing for Legacy Applications

Paul M. Jones
Debugging and testing go hand-in-hand. But how can you write unit tests for a legacy application? Most of the time, there *are* no "units" in a legacy application. Everything is tied to everything else, so testing anything in isolation is impossible. However, you don't have to use *unit* testing to discover bugs when you make changes. You can use *characterization* testing instead. In this presentation, Paul will talk about what characterization testing is, how to apply it, and how it can help you to manage and maintain legacy applications, especially while refactoring and modernizing.

Modern Tools for API Debugging and Testing

Neil Mansilla
When it comes to software testing, rigorous methodologies, frameworks and tools exist for unit, integration and functional tests. But when it comes to testing and debugging RESTful web service API integrations, where the API and apps are completely independent, we typically just cross our fingers and hope for the best. However, a new generation of API debugging and testing tools are on the rise, helping architects and developers on every side of the platform. Neil Mansilla will present the latest in API debugging and testing tools that are helping companies to deliver rock-solid, high performance APIs to their community.

Don't Reboot, Debug!

Joshua Thijssen
Nothing is showing up in the logs, everything works just fine on your development and acceptance environment, your unit-tests are all green and yet you've got major issues on your production server. What to do? Restart your web service? Reboot the system? Maybe we even add more hardware, just in case? Hell no! We debug it Chuck Norris style! During this talk I will show you how you can use some of the more advanced (linux) tools like strace, iostat and even gdb and dtrace to figure out quickly the bottlenecks in your Linux environment.

I generally agree with the suggestions to use WordPress.  Many people use it successfully for sites like this one.  There are lots of WordPress developers in the area, so it will be easy to get support.

So Mel,

Are you in touch with the original developer? Because that admin area appears to offer some functionality that *could* obviate the need for a coder - maybe.

Also, if you cannot get the credentials, if you own the domain, you might need coding assistance - someone to contact the host and review the files, I wold be happy to help, but also there are many good coders on this list.

Tac,

I wasn't trying to be rude or imply anything negative about you or your business practices. It just seemed like you're trying to reinvent the wheel when there wasn't any need for it. I'd recommend trying to get in touch with the previous company and see if you can get access to the back end. If they are cool enough to give him the credentials to log in then he might want to consider getting the help of a developer that's familiar with the care and feeding of a CMS system and see how much of a mess it is back there. If it's too much of a flustercluck then I might consider reverse engineering the site and using something like WP.

Re: [dcphp-dev] Need help with PHP site

Melvin, I agree with Tac. There's an upfront cost associated with a move to Wordpress. However, the overall cost shouldn't be overwhelming because it appears most of the content is static. The biggest advantage to bite the bullet is to leverage the strength of the Wordpress community. The wordpress codebase is constantly updated (for features, bug fixes, and security updates). There are countless folks who publish how-to guides that are a Google away. Wordpress is extendable with community developed modules and themes. And if you need any functional updates down the road, there are tons of developers familiar with Wordpress.

I find your comment about an overzelous developer trying to make some cash to be completely inappropriate (and wildly inaccurate).

I used to develop small php-driven sites for non-profits, exactly like this.  I converted them all to Wordpress, specifically so that they didn't need to contact me when they wanted to make modifications.

I stand by my advice (and seriously have no interest in being the one to do it).

You might be better off finding a Wordpress theme and re-creating the site in Wordpress.  Then it'd be fairly easy to update the site, or find people who can.  You can even do that without interacting with the old developers.  And frankly, you don't want to be tied to new developers either.

There's no reason that a site like yours should be custom-built, it's an ideal candidate for Wordpress.

Because it appears that to make modifications to the site you need a PHP developer and FTP access.

Even without looking at the code (which we cannot do without access to the server) I'd have to agree with Chris. It doesn't appear to be a CMS with easy (user friendly) to edit and update pages. I'm sure someone in the area could do some consultation work to determine exactly what you need. Feel free to contact me off-list if you'd like to schedule a consultation visit.
